1. A perspective on the potential of using marine organic fertilizers for the sustainable management of coastal ecosystem servicesIraj Emadodin, Thorsten Reinsch, Ana Rotter, Martina Orlando-Bonaca, Friedhelm Taube, Jamileh Javidpour, 2020 Opis: Agricultural production is predicted to double during the next century. To ensure food security in response to global population growth is a challenge and will require strategies that mitigate associated environmental damage in ways consistent with United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. One possible approach is to utilize organic fertilizers from marine sources to improve soil structure by enhancing activities of soil organisms and restoring essential plant nutrients to the soil. Here we identify opportunities to develop organic fertilizers from two types of materials of marine origin: seagrass wrack and jellyfish biomass. Seagrass wrack often occurs as undesirable waste material on beaches. In many coastal areas around the world jellyfish bloom presents a nuisance because of negative impacts on marine ecosystem productivity. Several investigations have reported that organic fertilizers produced from seagrass and jellyfish could enhance coastal ecosystem services by reducing pollution, and by improving soil health and quality. Recent research indicates that seagrass litter improves soil water holding capacity and the nutritional value of crops; moreover, it can be used as multi-functional fertilizer, due to its content of valuable macro- and microelements. The application of jellyfish fertilizer increases soil contents of organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and enhances the growth and survival of seedlings significantly. In this overview we describe novel approaches regarding the utilization of seagrass and jellyfish as sources of fertilizer, and experimental studies on the influences of marine organic fertilizers on soil restoration, and implications for coastal management. 2. Subterranean environments contribute to three-quarters of classified ecosystem servicesStefano Mammola, David Brankovits, Tiziana Di Lorenzo, Isabel R. Amorim, Raluca Ioana Bancila, Nataša Mori, Maja Zagmajster, 2025 Opis: Beneath the Earth’s surface lies a network of interconnected caves, voids, and systems of fissures forming in rocks of sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic origin. Though largely inaccessible to humans, this hidden realm supports and regulates services critical to ecological health and human well-being. Subterranean ecosystems are integral to major biogeochemical cycles, sustain diverse surface habitats, and serve as the primary source of irrigation and drinking water. They also offer non-material benefits, including scientific discovery, education, and cultural practices. Yet, these contributions often go unrecognized, partly due to the lack of a unified synthesis of ecosystem services across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine subterranean compartments. This gap limits effective communication of their value to scientists, practitioners, and the public. Through a systematic expert-based review, we show that subterranean ecosystems contribute to up to 75% of classified ecosystem services. Notably, many of these contributions are described only qualitatively, lacking numerical or economic quantification. Next, we provide examples of the main services to offer a global overview of their multifaceted value and vulnerability to environmental change. We believe this synthesis provides researchers and practitioners with concrete examples and targeted metaphors to more effectively communicate the importance of subterranean ecosystems to diverse audiences. 3. Myocardial strain imagingOtto A. Smiseth, Oliver Rider, Marta Cvijić, Ladislav Valkovič, Espen W. Remme, Jens-Uwe Voigt, 2025 Opis: Myocardial strain imaging by echocardiography or cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is a powerful method to diagnose cardiac disease. Strain imaging provides measures of myocardial shortening, thickening, and lengthening and can be applied to any cardiac chamber. Left ventricular (LV) global longitudinal strain by speckle-tracking echocardiography is the most widely used clinical strain parameter. Several CMR-based modalities are available and are ready to be implemented clinically. Clinical applications of strain include global longitudinal strain as a more sensitive method than ejection fraction for diagnosing mild systolic dysfunction. This applies to patients suspected of having heart failure with normal LV ejection fraction, to early systolic dysfunction in valvular disease, and when monitoring myocardial function during cancer chemotherapy. Segmental LV strain maps provide diagnostic clues in specific cardiomyopathies, when evaluating LV dyssynchrony and ischemic dysfunction. Strain imaging is a promising modality to quantify right ventricular function. Left atrial strain may be used to evaluate LV diastolic function and filling pressure. 7. Corrosion characterization and ion release in SLM-manufactured and wrought Ti6Al4V alloy in an oral environmentMirjam Bajt Leban, Tadeja Kosec, Matjaž Finšgar, 2022 Opis: As-produced and heat-treated TiAlV samples were prepared by selective laser melting and compared to wrought samples of identical chemical composition. Microstructural, corrosion, and spectroscopic studies of additively manufactured samples in artificial saliva at 37 °C, with NaF and at pH 2.3 were as a novelty combined with metal ion release during 42 days immersion. In artificial saliva higher amount of ions was released on SLM specimen when compared to wrought alloy. The total amount of ions released from SLM specimen in AS containing NaF was 10-times higher than in AS, while in AS with lactic acid it was 100-times higher. 8. Vojaško delovanje Rudolfa Maistra v MariboruTomaž Kladnik, 2025 Opis: Avtor na podlagi arhivskih virov in literature obravnava vojaško delovanje Rudolfa Maistra v Mariboru. Ugotavlja, da je general Maister ob spremembi državne in družbeno politične ureditve s svojo ognjevito narodno zavestjo ter strateško načrtovanim in odločno izvedenim vojaškim nastopom odločilno pripomogel k vzpostavitvi slovenske nacionalne in državne suverenosti na območju južne Štajerske in Maribora. Korenite spremembe v mestu je povzročil s prevzemom vojaške oblasti v mestu ter formiranjem prvih enot slovenske vojske, kar je omogočilo, da je razorožil nemško-avstrijske vojaške formacije in zasedel slovensko nacionalno ozemlje. Biorafinerijski potencial manjvrednega lesa rdečega bora (Pinus sylvestris L.) in robinije (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) za pridobivanje naravnih bioaktivnih učinkovin za zaščito lesaViljem Vek, Ida Poljanšek, Urša Osolnik, Peter Hrovatič, Angela Balzano, Miha Humar, Primož Oven, 2025 Opis: S prispevkom želimo predstaviti glavne rezultate in povzetek znanstvenih dognanj, do katerih smo prišli z dvema nacionalnima podoktorskima projektoma ob podpori takratnega Ministrstva za izobraževanje, znanost in šport Republike Slovenije (MIZŠ) ter Javne agencije za znanstvenoraziskovalno in inovacijsko dejavnost Republike Slovenije (ARIS). Analizirali smo biorafinerijski potencial manjvrednega lesa rdečega bora (Pinus sylvestris L.) in robinije (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) za ekstrakcijo naravnih bioaktivnih spojin. Les grč in jedrovine smo uporabili kot biomaso za ekstrakcijo polifenolnih ekstraktivov, ki smo jih nato uporabili v naravno osnovanih pripravkih za zaščito lesa. Rezultati so pokazali, da hidrofilni ekstraktivi grč bora in jedrovine robinije zavirajo glivni razkroj lesa in imajo velik potencial kot biocidne komponente in antioksidanti v naravno osnovanih zaščitnih pripravkih. Nadaljnje raziskave antioksidativnih in protiglivnih lastnosti ekstraktivov lesa in skorje so v teku.
