Difference between using tabulated and exact values of thermal properties of materials in numerical simulations of heat transfer through a high-performance window
Miha Jukić, Sabina Jordan, 2019, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Povzetek: The thermal properties of materials, primarily the thermal conductivity, are an essential input for numerical modelling of heat transfer in buildings and building components. When determining them according to relevant European standards, it is not uncommon to encounter materials for which the exact values are not appropriately specified and the tabulated values in standards are overly conservative. In such situations, the thermal conductivity of the material can be determined by measurement. However, this approach may prove inconvenient and too expensive, especially if the material in question turns out to have little influence on the overall thermal performance of the product. It is, therefore, of great interest to know how the thermal performance is affected by choosing either the accurate (measured) or the conservative (tabulated) value of the thermal conductivity. In this work, the two approaches are compared in a practical example – a high-performance window, Jelovica Jelofuture – using numerical simulations. Our study shows that modifying the thermal properties of individual materials generally leaves the thermal transmittances of the frame (Uf) and the window (UW) almost unaffected. If all of the materials considered are modified simultaneously, Uf changes by 1–2% while the change in UW remains below 1%. However, due to their small values, the calculated changes of Uf and UW may be significantly affected (further increased or reduced) by the rounding of the results according to the relevant standards. In contrast, using the tabulated value of linear thermal transmittance (Ψg) of the junction with the glazing leads to an overestimation of UW by up to 15%.

Elena Loredana Fodor, Vilma Ducman, Giovanni Ferrarini, Sergio Tamburini, Constantinos Tsoutis, Francesca Becherini, Antonio Garrido-Marijuán,, Giulia Mezzasalma, Leonardo Rossi, Emil Lezak, Adriana Bernardi, 2019, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Povzetek: InnoWEE is a four-year project (from 2016 to 2020) financed by the European Community that involves ten partners from different European countries, as Greece, Italy, Belgium, Romania, Slovenia, Spain and Poland. The aim is to use the waste materials coming from construction and demolition processes of buildings and include them into a geopolymeric matrix with the purpose of producing prefabricated panels for different applications. Construction and demolition waste (CDW) materials with suitable characteristics have been selected to develop high performance geopolymeric panels for building walls envelopes and radiant panels for indoor walls and ceilings with low environmental impact. Field tests will be carried out in different sites in Europe characterized by different climatic conditions to check the simplicity of the installation procedure and the performance of the panels in terms of energy efficiency and environmental impact.

Treatment of condensation in sandwich panels without known vapour resistance of sealant
Gregor Vidmar, 2020, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Povzetek: In order to calculate amount of interstitial condensation in a building envelope, water vapour resistance of each layer is of importance. Once having it, 1D calculation according to ISO 13788 with monthly average vapour pressures can be applied. In EN 14509 sandwich panels are considered to be impermeable for water vapour, thus (according to the standard) water vapour cannot enter from outside and condensate in the panels. But it is not always true for real sandwich panels, because joints between neighbouring panels can cause non-neglecting water vapour bridges. Although in measurements of linear water vapour transmittance of the joints (Ψv) stationary boundary vapour pressures can be applied, the measurements can be long lasting. We shortened time needed to get Ψv performing simulations in Delphin6.0. We simulated panels and steel sheets with joints using constant boundary vapour pressures and compared the results with the results of measurements on the equivalent systems. In systems under consideration a sealant in built-in-state, located at a joint of a sandwich panel, is a compressed EPDM tube. It is impossible to directly measure its effective μ according to ISO 12572. In the paper we study to which precision it is possible to determine it using measurements and simulations. Once having effective μ of the sealant (if all other necessary material parameters available) one can simulate condensation in envelopes including sandwich panels in 2D according to EN 15026 using hourly climatic data. Another goal of the study was determination of differences in resulting Ψv values when varying narrowest part of the gap dGAP at the joint in the panels without any sealant. Results confirm significant sensibility of Ψv to variations of dGAP.

Evaluation of fly ash-based alkali activated foams at room and elevated temperatures
Katja Traven, Mark Češnovar, Srečo D. Škapin, Vilma Ducman, 2020, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Povzetek: Alkali activated materials (AAM) are, in their broadest classification, any binder systems derived by the reaction of an alkali metal source (silicates, alkali hydroxides, carbonates , sulphates) with a solid, amorphous alumosilicate powder (found in precursors such as slag, fly ash and bottom ash). A wide variety of products can be obtained by the alkali activation process and could replace traditional construction products. Among the se, alkali activated foams (AAF) represent one of the most promising materials, owing to their economically accessible alumosilicate rich source materials, including industrial waste materials, clean processing, higher added value and most importantly, pro ducts with competitive properties. In the present study, the properties of alkali activated fly ash - based foam materials were studied at room temperature as well as at elevated temperatures (up to 1200 °C ) in order to develop a durable material in terms o f mechanical properties and suitability for high temperature applications.

BIM and LCA integration : a systematic literature review
Tajda Potrč Obrecht, Martin Röck, Endrit Hoxha, Alexander Passer, 2020, pregledni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: To foster sustainable development, the environmental impacts of the construction sector need to be reduced substantially. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is the established methodology for the quantification of environmental impacts, and therefore has been increasingly applied to assess the environmental performance of buildings. By coupling LCAs with digital design tools, e.g., building information modeling (BIM), the identification of environmental hotspots and their mitigation is possible during the design process. The objective of the study is to identify the current integration approaches, and determine the pros and cons of the integration process from different viewpoints, namely, technical, informational, organizational and functional issues. Therefore, a comprehensive systematic literature review (SLR) was performed. We identified 60 relevant BIM-LCA case studies and analyzed the applied BIM-LCA workflows in detail. A total of 16 of the reviewed studies applied LCA during the early design stage. These studies used a manual or semiautomatic data exchange between the BIM models and LCA tools. In most cases, contemporary BIM-LCA workflows utilized conventional spreadsheets (e.g., Excel sheets in 16 cases). However, the analysis shows that an automated link between LCA and BIM can be achieved when overcoming the technical, organizational and informational issues discussed in the paper. This could enable the streamlining of LCA applications in design practice, and thus support the necessary improvements in the environmental performance of buildings.

The use of paper industry side product in construction
Barbara Likar, Laura Vovčko, 2020, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Povzetek: The amount of waste material and side products of various industrial plants is increasing, which leads into waste accumulation and lack of space in disposal landfills. Paper industry, with its side products paper sludge and ash, faces these same issues. To reduce the accumulation of these materials, we explored the possibility of their use in construction. At first a series of geomechanical tests was conducted on a product consisting of fly ash and bottom ash. Based on the laboratory results test fields were constructed, where the preparation and installation technologies were tested. The fields were exposed to the atmospheric conditions, so durability of the product in the natural environment was proven. Since the composition of both fly ash and bottom ash depends on the paper industry process, a continuous monitoring of their characteristics was established.

Reviewing the modeling aspects and practices of shallow geothermal energy systems
Paul Christodoulides, Ana Vieira, Stanislav Lenart, João Maranha, Gregor Vidmar, Rumen Popov, Aleksandar Georgiev, Lazaros Aresti, Georgios Florides, 2020, pregledni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Shallow geothermal energy systems (SGES) may take different forms and have recently taken considerable attention due to energy geo-structures (EGS) resulting from the integration of heat exchange elements in geotechnical structures. Still, there is a lack of systematic design guidelines of SGES. Hence, in order to contribute towards that direction, the current study aims at reviewing the available SGES modeling options along with their various aspects and practices. This is done by first presenting the main analytical and numerical models and methods related to the thermal behavior of SGES. Then, the most important supplementary factors affecting such modeling are discussed. These include: (i) the boundary conditions, in the form of temperature variation or heat flow, that majorly affect the predicted thermal behavior of SGES; (ii) the spatial dimensions that may be crucial when relaxing the infinite length assumption for short heat exchangers such as energy piles (EP); (iii) the determination of SGES parameters that may need employing specific techniques to overcome practical difficulties; (iv) a short-term vs. long-term analysis depending on the thermal storage characteristics of GHE of different sizes; (v) the influence of groundwater that can have a moderating effect on fluid temperatures in both heating and cooling modes. Subsequently, thermo-mechanical interactions modeling issues are addressed that may be crucial in EGS that exhibit a dual functioning of heat exchangers and structural elements. Finally, a quite lengthy overview of the main software tools related to thermal and thermo-hydro-mechanical analysis of SGES that may be useful for practical applications is given. A unified software package incorporating all related features of all SGES may be a future aim.

Thermal insulation and flammability of composite waste polyurethane foam encapsulated in geopolymer for sustainable building envelope
Barbara Horvat, Nataša Knez, Uroš Hribar, Jakob Koenig, Branka Mušič, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Polyurethane foam (PUR) is a lightweight, thermally insulating, widely used, and highly flammable material that has after its use an adverse effect on the environment, i.e., PUR disposal is considered hazardous. Its flammability can be mitigated using various fire retardants, but they do not change the hazardous nature of waste PUR. Therefore, in the current study, waste PUR with and without flame retardants based on N and P was incorporated into a geopolymer, the alkali-activated material (AAM) based solely on metakaolin, to evaluate the potential recycling route of waste PUR while taking into account its flammability, so it can enter safely into the circular economy through the building industry. To enhance the mechanical properties of the composite, a fresh mixture was irradiated with microwaves. However, the irradiation of geopolymer containing PUR negatively influenced mechanical performance, which led to the evaluation of the behaviour of the complex dielectric constant of PUR and fire retardants. Materials and composites were evaluated regarding their chemistry, mineralogy, microstructure, and porosity to connect the structure with extrinsic properties like geometrical density, thermal conductivity, and fire properties. Nonetheless, positive influences of PUR being encapsulated in the geopolymer were lowered density (from 1.8 to 1.6 kg/l) and improved thermal insulation ability (from 940 to 860 mW/(m·K)) of the composites: with the inclusion of <5 % of PUR, thermal insulation improved by nearly 10 %. However, the contribution of PUR to the composite originated from its skeleton, which has more than 15 times bigger geometrical density (0.81 kg/l) compared to the density of the skeleton (0.047 kg/l). This offers an open field for further advancements of thermal properties, but would also lead to a decrease of the compressive strength, which was already lowered from 90 MPa for 30 % with <5 % of added grated PUR. Furthermore, the flammable nature of PUR and its other drawbacks can be controlled by permanent embedding in the noncombustible structure of geopolymer, making the envelope of sustainable buildings green and safer. Overall, including grated waste PUR in geopolymer represents a promising, easy, cost-effective recycling path with low energy consumption, where the composite cannot develop fire on a scale of pure PUR, even in the worst-case scenario, but only if the composite is designed in a way, that flammable materials cannot join flames during their combustion. This paper gives prospects to other flammable waste materials to be safely used in the circular economy, and to porous materials to shape properties of the composite by their intrinsic and/or extrinsic properties.

B-IMPACT project : eco-friendly and non-hazardous coatings for the protection of outdoor bronzes
Giulia Masi, Maëlenn Aufray, A. Balbo, E. Bernardi, Maria Chiara Bignozzi, Cristina Chiavari, J. Esvan, Nina Gartner, V. Grassi, Claudie Josse, Tadeja Kosec, Carla Martini, Cecilia Monticelli, Luka Škrlep, W. Sperotto, Erika Švara Fabjan, E. Tedesco, F. Zanotto, Luc Robbiola, 2020, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Povzetek: Application of protective coatings is the most widely used conservation treatment for outdoor bronzes. Eco-friendly and non-hazardous coatings are currently needed for conservation of outdoor bronze monuments. To fulfil this need, the M-ERA.NET European research project B-IMPACT (Bronze-IMproved non-hazardous PAtina CoaTings) aimed at assessing the protectiveness of innovative coatings for historical and modern bronze monuments exposed outdoors. In this project, two bronze substrates (historical Cu-Sn-Zn-Pb and modern Cu-Si-Mn alloys) were artificially patinated, by acid rain solution using dropping test and by "liver of sulphur" procedure (K2S aqueous solution) to obtain black patina, respectively. Subsequently, the application of several newly developed protective coatings was carried out and their performance was investigated by preliminary electrochemical tests. In the following steps of the work, the assessment of the best-performing coatings was carried out and their performance was compared to Incralac, one of the most widely used protective coatings in conservation practice. A multi-analytical approach was adopted, considering artificial ageing (carried out in representative conditions, including exposure to rain runoff, stagnant rain and UV radiation) and metal release, as well as visual aspect (so as to include aesthetical impact among the coating selection parameters) and morphological and structural evolution of the coated surfaces due to simulated outdoor exposure. Lastly, also the health impact of selected coatings was assessed by occupational hazard tests. The removability and re-applicability of the best-performing coatings were also assessed. The best alternatives to the conventional Incralac exhibited were: (i) fluoroacrylate blended with methacryloxy-propyl-trimethoxy-silane (FA-MS) applied on patinated Cu-Sn-Zn-Pb bronze and (ii) 3-mercapto-propyl-trimethoxysilane (PropS-SH) applied on patinated Cu-Si-Mn bronze.
