Roadmap for electrocaloric films characterization
Victor Regis de Moraes, Urban Tomc, Andrej Kitanovski, Hana Uršič Nemevšek, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The development of electrocaloric (EC) elements for cooling technologies has progressed by integrating the EC layers onto various substrates. However, a precise understanding of heat losses on direct characterization methods is still lacking, particularly in the infrared (IR) camera method. In this work, we perform numerical simulations on EC film structures to benchmark the substrate influence on the cooling output of the structure for characterization purposes. Substrates with low thermal effusivity (≤3 kW ▫$s^{1/2} m^{−2} K^{−1}$▫) exhibit minimal influence on the output of films. Simulations were also performed to investigate the impact of EC film and black-paint coating thicknesses on the correction factor for IR characterization methods. A single-digit correction factor can be achieved if the EC film is thicker than the coating. Our results offer a roadmap for designing EC structures for cooling at the micro-to-nano scales.

Methods and Ethics of Visual Ethnography in the Production of Experiential and Participatory Films on Intangible Heritage
Nadja Valentinčič Furlan, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The most characteristic films within the UNESCO safeguarding paradigm of intangible heritage are the films in the nomination files, published on the UNESCO website after the elements are inscribed on the lists (UNESCO n. d. a. ICH Lists). Visual analysis has revealed the strong predominance of top-down, word-and-sentence-based illustrative films with the etic off-commentaries of professionals. The article calls for films produced within the UNESCO safeguarding paradigm to focus on heritage practitioners and their emic views. The author discusses the production of two experiential films, based on collaborative approach of visual ethnography.

Green inhibition of microbiologically influenced corrosion on 316L stainless steel by Artemisia annua extract
Gloria Zlatić Jelić, Ivana Martinović, Zora Pilić, Janez Kovač, Marcela Romić, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: 316L stainless steel is widely used in marine and biomedical applications. However, its protective Cr-rich passive film can be destabilized by microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). Here, a multidisciplinary approach combining electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PP), optical profilometry, ATR-FTIR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and ICP-OES was used to investigate corrosion behavior and passive film chemistry of 316L stainless steel (SS) exposed to Pseudomonas aeruginosa in artificial seawater, and to evaluate the inhibitory effect of an aqueous Artemisia annua extract (AAE). Exposure to P. aeruginosa, resulted in a marked decrease in film resistance, increased corrosion current density, enhanced Fe dissolution, and pronounced surface pitting. Although biotic exposure increased the apparent oxide thickness, XPS analysis revealed the formation of a chemically heterogeneous and less protective surface layer. In contrast, the addition of AAE significantly mitigated these effects by stabilizing a Cr-enriched passive film, increasing charge-transfer resistance, reducing jcor, and suppressing localized attack. ATR-FTIR confirmed adsorption of phenolic acids from AAE, while XPS depth profiling revealed stabilization and thickening of the passive layer. The inhibition efficiency of AAE, evaluated by PP, EIS, and ICP-OES, ranged from 65% to 83%, demonstrating consistent protective behavior across all methods. These results indicate that A. annua extract acts as a plant-derived corrosion inhibitor that preserves the functional stability of the Cr-rich passive film under MIC conditions, offering a promising strategy for corrosion mitigation in marine environments.

The effect of firing conditions on the characteristics of thick-film resistors for temperature sensors
Barbara Repič, Darko Belavič, Danjela Kuščer, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: : An integrated miniature electrochemical sensor (ES) that offers rapid, sensitive, and selective detection of chemical and biological contaminants in a variety of samples requires temperature control to work accurately. To address this, one approach is to locate temperature sensor (TS) next to the ES components. However, this integration poses a challenge as different firing processes are required for the sensor components and the TS. Commercially available thick-film materials for the realisation of TS are designed for screen printing on alumina and firing in air at 850 °C for 10 minutes. However, a key component of an ES, a carbon-based working electrode, must be fired in an oxygen-lean atmosphere. In this study, we investigated the influence of the firing atmosphere, i.e., air and argon, on the characteristics of thick-film resistors, including thickness, roughness, phase composition, resistivity, and temperature dependence. For the study, we used two commercially available thick-film pastes, NTC2114 and NTC2113, as TS with nominal sheet resistivities of 10 kΩ/sq and 1 kΩ/sq at 25 °C, respectively. Using X-ray powder diffraction analyses, we detected RuO2 and spinel phases in the samples heated at 850 °C in air. However, when the samples were fired in argon, we detect metallic ruthenium and alloys. As a result of these changes, the resistivity of the NTC2114 and NTC2113 increased significantly. However, despite these changes, the relative resistance and the coefficient of temperature sensitivity did not vary significantly, indicating the suitability of these materials as TS. These findings have important implications for the future integration of TS into various screen-printed ES systems, fostering the design and development of systems with enhanced accuracy and reliability in temperature measurements.

Tribo-corrosion properties of a NiTi dental wire
Petra Močnik, Tadeja Kosec, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: NiTi-alloy arch wires are used in dental medicine for tooth positioning. Failures are reported during the mounting and operation. It is supposed that these difficulties are results of a simultaneous presence of corrosion and mechanical wear. First, a corrosive medium was examined in order to simulate the conditions in the mouth. Different simulated body fluids were compared with natural saliva using electrochemical methods. The corrosion properties of the NiTi dental wire in the as-received state and without the surface oxide film were studied with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Tribo-corrosion tests of NiTi in artificial saliva were performed and a relation between the chemical and mechanical wear was studied. After the experiment, the surface was spectroscopically examined. The relation between the chemical and mechanical wear was determined.
