Investigations of 6-pane glazing : properties and possibilities
Aleš Kralj, Marija Drev, Matjaž Žnidaršič, Boštjan Černe, Jože Hafner, Bjørn Petter Jelle, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Today there is increasing interest and demand for energy savings in the building sector. Windows still represent a weak point in the building envelope with respect to thermal performance due to thermal losses from the interior to the exterior as well as overheating of the interior due to excessive solar radiation from the exterior environment into the interior. However, windows and glazing structures enable the utilisation of daylight and heat from incident solar radiation, while at the same time providing comfort and a view to the outdoor surroundings. Multipane glazing and windows may represent a possible way to lower energy consumption related to heating and cooling. In this study, a multipane glazing structure, more specifically a 6-pane glazing, has been constructed and investigated with regard to various properties and possibilities. The general configuration of the 6-pane glazing is described. Furthermore, properties such as U-value, solar energy transmittance, visible transmittance, solar heat gain coefficient, glass pane temperatures, vapour permeability, economical aspects, and comfort of living, among others, are analysed. Finally, a case study is presented that demonstrates a 50% reduction in the annual energy consumption after renovation with this 6-pane glazing.

Rare earth elements and yttrium in cold mineral and thermal (~30-60 °C) waters from Tertiary aquifers in the Mura Basin, north-eastern Slovenia: a review
Polona Kralj, 2022, pregledni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Cold mineral and thermal waters from Tertiary aquifers in the Mura Basin mainly belong to the Ca-(Mg)-(Na)-HCO3 and Na-HCO3 hydrogeochemical facies, respectively, and the concentrations of yttrium (Y) and lanthanides or rare earth elements (REEs) are far below (10-2 – 10-4) the abundances in the aquifer sediments. Mineral waters are high pCO2, and the plots of concentrations of YREEs normalised to Post Archean Australian Shale (PAAS) show fractionation of Y and heavy REEs (HREEs) over light REEs (LREEs), and a significant positive europium (Eu) anomaly. Thermal water from regionally developed aquifer Thermal I (recently also termed the Mura/Ujfalu Formation aquifer) shows a similar PAAS-normalised pattern with an obvious positive Eu anomaly and the tendency of enrichment with middle REEs (MREEs). The plots of PAAS-normalised YREE concentrations in thermal waters from the underlying low-permeability aquifers with poorly developed fracture porosity and abundant CO2 are flat with insignificant positive Eu anomaly. The abundance and fractionation of YREEs in mineral and thermal waters seems to be mainly controlled by the presence of carbonate complexing ligands, permeability of the aquifers and the related time of water-rock interaction.

Decrease in cellular nanovesicles concentration in blood of athletes more than 15 hours after marathon
Zala Jan, Mitja Drab, Damjana Drobne, Apolonija Bedina Zavec, Mojca Benčina, Barbara Drašler, Matej Hočevar, Judita Lea Krek, Ljubiša Pađen, Manca Pajnič, Neža Repar, Boštjan Šimunič, Roman Štukelj, Veronika Kralj-Iglič, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Introduction: Cellular nanovesicles (CNVs), that are shed from cells, have been recognized as promising indicators of health status. We analyzed the effect of long-distance running on concentration of CNVs, along with some standard blood parameters, in 27 athletes two days before and > 15 hours after physical effort. Methods: CNVs were isolated by repetitive centrifugation and washing of samples, and assessed by flow cytometry. Cholinesterase (ChE) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity were measured spectrophotometrically. Interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-% (TNF-%) concentrations were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). C-reactive protein (CRP) was measured with immunoturbidimetric determination and lipidogram parameters were measured by enzymatic colorimetric assay. Flow cytometry was used for blood cell count and mean platelet volume (MPV) measurement. Results: More than 15 hours after physical effort a decrease was found in CNVs% concentration in isolates from blood (46%; p< 0.05), in ChE activity in whole blood (47%; p< 0.001), in plasma (34%; p< 0.01), and in erythrocyte suspension (54%; p< 0.001), as well as in GST activity in erythrocyte suspension (16%; p< 0.01) and in IL-6 concentration in plasma (63%; p< 0.05). We found no change in GST activity in plasma and in TNF-% concentration in plasma. Correlations (> 0.8; p< 0.001) between CNVs% concentration and ChE activity, and GST activity, respectively, in erythrocyte suspension were found. Conclusion: We found that > 15 hours post-physical effort, CNVs% concentration was below the initial value, concomitant with other measured parameters: ChE and GST activity as well as IL-6 concentration, indicating a favorable effect of physical effort on health status. CNVs% concentration and ChE activity in isolates from peripheral blood proved to have potential as indicators of the response of the human body to inflammation after physical effort. Physical activity should be considered as an important factor in preparation of subjects for blood sampling in procedures focusing on CNV-containing diagnostic and therapeutic compounds.
