2. Tracing factions and power struggles in late medieval TrogirAnte Bećir, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The paper traces the political agency of factions in late medieval Trogir, by focusing on the most important cases of open conflicts during the 14th and 15th century. Factional power struggles represented a typical feature of Italian communes, and the Trogir case study implies an excellent example of how the political culture in Dalmatian towns resembled greatly that in the Italian communes. Factional blocs were based on political, familial or business ties and headed by powerful nobles or noble lineages. To secure their positions, noble families in Trogir often formed alliances with other noble families and groups within the commoner majority or with extra-communal power holders. However, these alliances could easily be unstable and easily broken, and that only increased intrigue and uncertainty in the political life. The goal of the paper is to contribute to our understanding of the political culture in the late medieval Dalmatian towns within a comparative framework. 3. Rethinking Ethnic Identity in the Archaeology of the Ancient SlavsBenjamin Štular, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The archaeology of the ancient Slavs has advanced methodologically but remains divided between scholars who deny the Slavs’ migrations, and those linking material culture directly to ethnic identities. This paper seeks to bridge this divide by reassessing the theoretical framework for studying the ancient Slavs. It critiques the historical development of research on ethnic identity in archaeology, highlighting limitations in both primordialist and instrumentalist models. Instead, we propose redefining archaeological culture as a polythetic commonality of practice rooted in learned social behaviours. This framework permits identifying ethnic identities in the archaeological record without relying on texts. Applying this approach to the Prague-culture-assemblage archaeological culture, we demonstrate shared practices in language, housing, dress, sustenance, social relations, and genetic relatedness. Our findings confirm that the ancient Slavs existed as both an archaeological culture and a distinct identity group with strong collective self-awareness. 4. “Molt greignour senefiance" : The Role of Interpreters in The Quest of the Holy GrailAlenka Koželj, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: In the 13th-century French romance The Quest of the Holy Grail various interpreters appear, who—through Christian hermeneutics—explain to the knights of the quest their dreams, visions, prophecies, etc. The present article discusses the question of the source of authority of the interpreters, and analyzes in the text itself the foundations of such an authority. One of the most important starting points is the presupposition that the procedures of biblical exegesis influenced the romance and the image of the interpreter.
