1. In situ evaluation of an active-passive sampling (APS) technique for monitoring psychoactive compounds in effluent wastewaterAllen Jun Anies, Maria Laimou-Geraniou, Maarten Quireyns, Taja Verovšek, David John Heath, Ester Heath, Raewyn M. Town, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Monitoring of psychoactive drugs and their metabolites in wastewater is critical to understanding their environmental fate and potential impacts. Passive sampling offers a complementary approach to conventional composite sampling, providing time-integrated monitoring, while offering insights into bioavailable fractions of compounds. This study evaluates the applicability of an active-passive sampling (APS) approach for monitoring eight psychoactive compounds in effluent wastewater, integrating field deployments with predictive modelling of sorbent-to-water partition coefficients (K[sw]). APS and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) samplers, equipped with hydrophilic-lipophilic balanced (HLB) and mixed-mode cation exchange (MCX) sorbents were deployed alongside daily composite sampling during 2023-2024 monitoring campaigns in Belgium and Slovenia. APS exhibited non-linear uptake kinetics indicative of non-ideal sink behaviour and additional mass-transfer limitations, including interfacial effects, while DGT uptake remained predominantly diffusion-controlled over the deployment periods. K[SW] values were predicted using tree-based machine-learning models (Random Forest and XGBoost), enabling robust interpretation of APS data under near-equilibrium conditions. APS and DGT measurements generally showed good agreement, though APS concentrations were systematically higher for most compounds, with differences influenced by sorbent type and environmental factors. The controlled laminar flow of APS enhanced sorption consistency under variable wastewater conditions. Comparisons with composite sampling highlighted the complementary nature of these approaches, with APS providing additional insights on bioavailable and particle-bound fractions. Overall, APS presents a robust and versatile tool for monitoring psychoactive compounds, supporting quantitative assessment of contaminant dynamics, bioavailability, and fate in aquatic systems. 2. Long-term outcome after combined or sequential liver and kidney transplantation in children with infantile and juvenile primary hyperoxaluria type 1Sebastian Loos, Markus J. Kemper, Kaja Schmaeschke, Uta Herden, Lutz Fischer, Bernd Hoppe, Tanja Kersnik-Levart, Enke Grabhorn, Raphael Schild, Jun Oh, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Introduction: Combined or sequential liver and kidney transplantation (CLKT/SLKT) restores kidney function and corrects the underlying metabolic defect in children with end-stage kidney disease in primary hyperoxaluria type 1 (PH1). However, data on long-term outcome, especially in children with infantile PH1, are rare. Methods: All pediatric PH1-patients who underwent CLKT/SLKT at our center were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Eighteen patients (infantile PH1 n=10, juvenile PH1 n = 8) underwent transplantation (CLKT n=17, SLKT n = 1) at a median age of 5.4 years (1.5–11.8). Patient survival was 94% after a median follow-up of 9.2 years (6.4–11.0). Liver and kidney survival-rates after 1, 10, and 15 years were 90%, 85%, 85%, and 90%, 75%, 75%, respectively. Age at transplantation was significantly lower in infantile than juvenile PH1 (1.6 years (1.4–2.4) vs. 12.8 years (8.4–14.1), P = 0.003). Median follow-up was 11.0 years (6.8–11.6) in patients with infantile PH1 vs. 6.9 years (5.7–9.9) in juvenile PH1 (P = 0.15). At latest follow-up kidney and/or liver graft loss and/or death showed a tendency to a higher rate in patientswith infantile vs. juvenile PH1 (3/10 vs. 1/8, P=0.59). Discussion: In conclusion, the overall patient survival and long-term transplant outcome of patients after CLKT/SLKT for PH1 is encouraging. However, results in infantile PH1 tended to be less optimal than in patients with juvenile PH1. 3. Successful multiculturalism in education : analysing the integration of the Jewish community in UkraineKang-Hyun Kim, Jun-ki Chung, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The research aims to analyse how Ukraine effectively implements multicultural principles in education to promote mutual understanding and harmonious coexistence among diverse cultural groups. The methodology involves synthesis as well as cultural, conceptual, and structural analyses, through which the research identifies the key elements contributing to the successful integration of multicultural values. These elements include fostering an educational climate that supports intercultural interaction, drawing on historical experiences to deepen understanding and tolerance, and ensuring educational strategies are tailored to embrace diverse cultural narratives. The findings emphasise the importance of maintaining openness to diversity, which facilitates the creation of an educational realm where every cultural identity is valued and actively engaged. The outcomes underscore the importance of structured teacher training in multicultural competencies, supported by specialised foundations and community centres that provide the necessary resources for these educational frameworks. Bustin, Jo Vandesompele, 2020, pregledni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Digital PCR (dPCR) has developed considerably since the publication of the Minimum Information for Publication of Digital PCR Experiments (dMIQE) guidelines in 2013, with advances in instrumentation, software, applications, and our understanding of its technological potential. Yet these developments also have associated challenges; data analysis steps, including threshold setting, can be difficult and preanalytical steps required to purify, concentrate, and modify nucleic acids can lead to measurement error. To assist independent corroboration of conclusions, comprehensive disclosure of all relevant experimental details is required. To support the community and reflect the growing use of dPCR, we present an update to dMIQE, dMIQE2020, including a simplified dMIQE table format to assist researchers in providing key experimental information and understanding of the associated experimental process. Adoption of dMIQE2020 by the scientific community will assist in standardizing experimental protocols, maximize efficient utilization of resources, and further enhance the impact of this powerful technology.
