2. Enhancing magnesium bioactivity for biomedical applications : effects of laser texturing and sandblasting on surface propertiesMarjetka Conradi, Aleksandra Kocijan, Bojan Podgornik, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Magnesium and its alloys, valued for their lightweight and durable characteristics, have garnered increasing attention for biomedical applications due to their exceptional biocompatibility and biodegradability. This work introduces a comparison of advanced and basic methods—laser texturing and sandblasting—on magnesium surfaces to enhance bioactivity for biomedical applications. Employing a comprehensive analysis spanning surface morphology, hardness, wettability, tribological performance, and corrosion behavior, this study elucidates the intricate relationship between varied surface treatments and magnesium’s performance. Findings reveal that both laser texturing and sandblasting induce grain refinement. Notably, sandblasting, particularly with a duration of 2 s, demonstrates superior wear resistance and reduced corrosion rates compared to untreated magnesium, thereby emerging as a promising approach for enhancing magnesium bioactivity in biomedical contexts. This investigation contributes to a deeper understanding of the nuanced interactions between diverse surface treatments and their implications for magnesium implants in chloride-rich environments, offering valuable insights for prospective biomedical applications. 3. Influence of the oxidizing technique on the biocompatible and corrosion properties of Ti6Al4V in a physiological environmentMirjam Bajt Leban, Tadeja Kosec, Aleksandra Kocijan, Marjetka Conradi, Ita Junkar, Janez Kovač, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This work aims to evaluate the corrosion and biocompatibility properties of oxide films generated on Ti6Al4V alloys using both traditional and novel methods. Oxide films were generated by anodization and plasma treatment to achieve a blue surface finish. The oxide films were then characterized and compared to a native film formed on the Ti6Al4V.
Electrochemical tests, incorporating potentiodynamic tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, were employed to define the electrochemical resistance of oxides in an environment simulating biological exposure. In vitro tests were conducted to study ion release and biocompatible properties over a 6-week period of exposure to a 0.9 wt% NaCl solution, at body temperature. Various spectroscopic techniques, including ToF-SIMS, XRD, and Raman analysis, were used to study the structure and chemistry of the oxide films. The sub-surface layer was analysed by microstructural investigation.
The type of oxidation was found to have a key influence on the oxide composition, especially with respect to the depth distribution of the individual alloy elements through the oxide film. The oxidation process determines which of the alloying elements are released into the environment, as a result of the corrosion reactions. 4. Characterization of micro-threaded stem taper surface of cementless hip endoprosthesesDrago Dolinar, Boštjan Kocjančič, Klemen Avsec, Barbara Šetina, Aleksandra Kocijan, Matjaž Godec, Marko Sedlaček, Mojca Debeljak, John T. Grant, Timon Zupanc, Monika Jenko, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: We investigated micro-threaded stem taper surface and its impact on premature failures, aseptic loosening, and infection in cementless hip endoprostheses. Our study focused on the fretting, and crevice corrosion of micro-threaded tapers, as well as the characterization of the microstructure and surface properties of two new and three retrieved Zweymüller stem tapers. The retrieved samples were selected and examined based on the head–stem taper interface being the sole source of modularity with a metallic component, specifically between the Ti alloy taper stem and the ceramic head. To determine the surface chemistry and microstructures of both new and retrieved hip endoprostheses stem taper titanium alloy, scanning -electron microscopy (SEM) was employed for morphological and microstructural analyses. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was utilized for characterizing chemical element distribution, and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) was used for phase analysis. The roughness of the micro-threated stem tapers from different manufacturers was investigated using an optical profilometer, with standard roughness parameters Ra (average surface roughness) and Rz (mean peak to valley height of the roughness profile) being measured. Electrochemical studies revealed no fretting corrosion in retrieved stem tapers with ceramic heads. Consequently, three retrieved tapers and two new ones for comparison underwent potentiodynamic measurements in Hank’s solution to determine the corrosion rate of new and retrieved stem taper surfaces. The results showed a low corrosion rate for both new and prematurely failed retrieved samples due to aseptic loosening. However, the corrosion rate was higher in infected and low-grade infected tapers. In conclusion, our study suggests that using ceramic heads reduces taper corrosion and subsequently decreases the incidence of premature failures in total hip arthroplasty. 9. The effect of heat treatment on the interface of 155 PH martensitic stainless steel and SAF 2507 duplex steel in functionally graded AM componentsMartina Koukolíková, Pavel Podaný, Sylwia Rzepa, Michal Brázda, Aleksandra Kocijan, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Multi-material components, also known as functionally graded materials (FGMs), are innovative materials that possess unique properties due to their composition and have many potential applications in engineering and science. The effect of the heat treatment (HT) of functionally graded materials 15–5 precipitation-hardened (PH) martensitic steel and SAF 2507 duplex stainless steel (and the opposite order of deposition, i.e. SAF 2507 first followed by 15–5 PH stainless steel) on the interface microstructures was systematically investigated in the presented research. The choice of HT followed the trend of optimum post-processing for the individual alloys. A significant modification in the interface microstructure, characterized in the microstructural transition zone (MTZ) formed above the fusion line. Mechanical properties by miniaturized testing method including hardness measurement characterized both types of interfaces. The sequence of the materials’ application did not have a significant effect on their final mechanical tensile properties in the heat-treated states. Nevertheless, the microstructural change at the MTZ led to drop in the hardness at the interface. The research presents heat-treated FGMs in a horizontal configuration to form a high-quality metallurgical joint between heterogeneous materials manufactured by powder-based directed energy deposition method. 10. Additive manufacturing multi-material components of SAF 2507 duplex steel and 15-5 PH martensitic stainless steelMartina Koukolíková, Pavel Podaný, Sylwia Rzepa, Michal Brázda, Aleksandra Kocijan, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The study reports the successful deposition of 15–5 precipitation-hardened (PH) martensitic steel on SAF 2507 duplex stainless steel (and vice versa) to form functionally graded materials (FGMs) using powder-based, directed-energy-deposition (DED) technology. The evolution of the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the 15–5 PH/SAF 2507 functionally graded material in the as-built state were investigated systematically. The results proved that the microstructural transition zone (MTZ) is formed above the fusion line due to the dilution effect of both steels. The phase composition of the MTZ consists of ferrite and, in comparison to the base materials, an increased amount of austenite. The interface has the lowest hardness owing to the formation of a significant proportion of the austenitic phase. However, the tensile mechanical properties were not affected by the interface as failure occurred in both SAF 2507 and at the interface regions. The research presents a promising application of FGMs in a horizontal configuration to form a high - quality, metallurgical joint between heterogeneous materials. This study introduces a novel approach by additive manufacturing (AM) of heterogeneous multi-materials, merging the favorable properties of duplex SAF 2507 and martensitic 15-5 PH stainless steels through superior metallurgical bonding. The combination of SAF 2507 and 15-5 PH in a functionally graded material has not been previously explored, as the existing studies deal with the duplex stainless steels SAF 2507 and either martensitic stainless-steel 15-5 PH deposited separately by laser powder-bed-fusion (L-PBF) or DED methods. This research pioneers the investigation of these materials in tandem, paving the way for the development of novel FGMs with optimized properties for specific applications. The resulting FGM exhibits exceptional corrosion resistance and high strength, making it highly versatile for applications in diverse industries such as offshore oil and gas production, aerospace, aviation, and chemical processing equipment.
