Single-use plastic bans pollution : exploring stakeholder perspectives on best practices for reducing plastic
Emily Cowan, Andy M. Booth, Andreas Misund, Katja Klun, Ana Rotter, Rachel Tiller, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Abstract In this study, we conducted and documented workshops and interviews in Norway and Slovenia to identify stakeholder and future generation opinions and mitigation strategies for solving one of the most prominent environmental issues: plastic pollution. As part of the EU H2020 project GoJelly, stakeholders were brought together to explore their perceptions on considering jellyfish mucus as a new resource to contribute to reducing plastic pollution from entering the marine environment. The study was conducted in the spring of 2019, in a context directly after the European Union (EU) announced its Directive to ban the most commonly used single-use plastic (SUP) items. The study applied the snowball method as a methodological choice to identify relevant stakeholders. Systems thinking was utilized as a participatory modelling approach, which allowed for the creation of conceptual mind maps from the various workshops and interviews, to understand consumers’ consciousness, and to map out ideas on plastic pollution reduction. Plastic pollution takes place on a global scale and stakeholders discussed their individual perceptions of national and international solutions that could be put in place to solve it, including the opportunities around utilizing jellyfish mucus to filter and capture micro- and nanoplastic. We found that industry stakeholders in both case areas were generally more accepting of policy and increased innovation moving forward, but placed weight on the scientific community to conduct more research on the pollution issue and propose solutions. Future generation stakeholders (youth aged 14–18), however, put emphasis on consumer behavior and buying patterns of single-use products fueling the plastic crisis.

Observing and modeling long-term persistence of P. noctiluca in coupled complementary marine systems (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea and Messina Strait)

Povzetek: In the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Messina (MS) is a very peculiar area, connecting highly different regions and representing a privileged observatory for an early comprehension and assessment of ecosystems shifts. It is hypothesized that the outbreaks observed near the coast of many sites in the Mediterranean Sea may be the result of transport of permanent populations of P. noctiluca in pelagic waters to the coast, caused by specific hydrodynamic conditions. By both visual observations and numerical experiments our objective is twofold: (A) to help clarify whether the basin of the Aeolian Islands Archipelago (AIA), in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea (STS), may be the site from which large populations of P. noctiluca are transported to the MS, and (B) to evaluate whether the upwelling turbulent system of the MS can be an energetic opportunity for this species. It should offer a rich habitat without jeopardizing the overall survival of the population, that is subject to stranding due to strong currents. Although very different, the two involved ecosystems (AIA and MS ) are complementary for the success of Pelagia noctiluca life cycle. Outputs obtained by coupling the 3D hydrodynamic model (SHYFEM) with a Lagrangian particle tracking model support the hypothesis of a connectivity between these two ecosystems, particularly in the first half of the year, indicating the coastal areas around the AIA as potential optimal source location for Pelagia larval stages. We support the very attractive hypothesis that two connected systems exist, the former one favours Pelagia's reproduction and acts as a nursery and the latter favours its growth due to higher productivity. We speculate that the reproductive population of the AIA is not permanent, but is renewed every year by individuals who have fed and quickly grown in the MS and who are passively transported by downwelling along canyon "corridors".

From causal networks to adverse outcome pathways : a developmental neurotoxicity case study
Živa Ramšak, Vid Modic, Roman A. Li, Colette vom Berg, Anže Županič, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The last decade has seen the adverse outcome pathways (AOP) framework become one of the most powerful tools in chemical risk assessment, but the development of new AOPs remains a slow and manually intensive process. Here, we present a faster approach for AOP generation, based on manually curated causal toxicological networks. As a case study, we took a recently published zebrafish developmental neurotoxicity network, which contains causally connected molecular events leading to neuropathologies, and developed two new adverse outcome pathways: Inhibition of Fyna (Src family tyrosine kinase A) leading to increased mortality via decreased eye size (AOP 399 on AOP-Wiki) and GSK3beta (Glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta) inactivation leading to increased mortality via defects in developing inner ear (AOP 410). The approach consists of an automatic separation of the toxicological network into candidate AOPs, filtering the AOPs according to available evidence and length as well as manual development of new AOPs and weight-of-evidence evaluation. The semiautomatic approach described here provides a new opportunity for fast and straightforward AOP development based on large network resources.

Indoor navigation with a Smartphone
Drago Torkar, 2024, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Povzetek: This chapter presents a cost-effective system for indoor localization and navigation that does not require the use of satellite positioning or data communication networks. The system, implemented as a smartphone app, relies on QR codes that are pre-generated and attached to the walls inside the building. By utilizing the information from these codes and the smartphone’s inertial motion unit (IMU) sensors processed by the Pedestrian Dead-Reckoning (PDR) algorithm, the user’s current position can be determined. The Dijkstra navigation algorithm is then used to guide the user to the desired destination. The smartphone app can also be used as a healthcare logistics service in mass-casualty incidents for collecting and reporting georeferenced triage decisions to the cloud.

Explainable anomaly detection of 12-Lead ECG signals using denoising autoencoder
Rok Hribar, Drago Torkar, 2024, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Povzetek: The basic idea was to create a proof of concept demonstrating that the indoor navigation and localisation is possible using only passive tags. For this purpose, a smartphone navigation app was developed to be used in inner parts of the buildings and which can operate with no satellite positioning service available and no communication network present. The satellite navigation systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS, IRNSS) inside buildings, at least on lower floors and cellars, in central parts, and away from windows, usually do not work, or their accuracy is very reduced due to a small number of visible satellites. The communication networks (WiFi, LTE, 5G…) might not be available in some circumstances such as catastrophic incidents, power reductions, or similar, which disables the localisation systems based on them. The purpose of the smartphone app was twofold. First, to develop a reliable, simple-to-use, and cheap indoor navigation system that could be used in large buildings like hospitals, shopping malls, trade centres, fairs, etc. where no other positioning service is available. Second, to develop an indoor position reporting system that can be used in accidents and mass-casualty incidents for reporting triage decisions to the server. Both functionalities are based on the QR codes [1] holding all the information needed.

Stress knowledge map : a knowledge graph resource for systems biology analysis of plant stress responses
Carissa Bleker, Živa Ramšak, Andras Bittner, Vid Podpečan, Maja Zagorščak, Bernhard Wurzinger, Špela Baebler, Marko Petek, Maja Križnik, Anže Županič, Kristina Gruden, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Stress Knowledge Map (SKM; https://skm.nib.si) is a publicly available resource containing two complementary knowledge graphs that describe the current knowledge of biochemical, signaling, and regulatory molecular interactions in plants: a highly curated model of plant stress signaling (PSS; 543 reactions) and a large comprehensive knowledge network (488 390 interactions). Both were constructed by domain experts through systematic curation of diverse literature and database resources. SKM provides a single entry point for investigations of plant stress response and related growth trade-offs, as well as interactive explorations of current knowledge. PSS is also formulated as a qualitative and quantitative model for systems biology and thus represents a starting point for a plant digital twin. Here, we describe the features of SKM and show, through two case studies, how it can be used for complex analyses, including systematic hypothesis generation and design of validation experiments, or to gain new insights into experimental observations in plant biology.

On the Schrödinger-Poisson system with $(p,q)$-Laplacian
Yueqiang Song, Yuanyuan Huo, Dušan Repovš, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: We study a class of Schrödinger-Poisson systems with $(p,q)$-Laplacian. Using fixed point theory, we obtain a new existence result for nontrivial solutions. The main novelty of the paper is the combination of a double phase operator and the nonlocal term. Our results generalize some known results.

Reviewing the modeling aspects and practices of shallow geothermal energy systems
Paul Christodoulides, Ana Vieira, Stanislav Lenart, João Maranha, Gregor Vidmar, Rumen Popov, Aleksandar Georgiev, Lazaros Aresti, Georgios Florides, 2020, pregledni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Shallow geothermal energy systems (SGES) may take different forms and have recently taken considerable attention due to energy geo-structures (EGS) resulting from the integration of heat exchange elements in geotechnical structures. Still, there is a lack of systematic design guidelines of SGES. Hence, in order to contribute towards that direction, the current study aims at reviewing the available SGES modeling options along with their various aspects and practices. This is done by first presenting the main analytical and numerical models and methods related to the thermal behavior of SGES. Then, the most important supplementary factors affecting such modeling are discussed. These include: (i) the boundary conditions, in the form of temperature variation or heat flow, that majorly affect the predicted thermal behavior of SGES; (ii) the spatial dimensions that may be crucial when relaxing the infinite length assumption for short heat exchangers such as energy piles (EP); (iii) the determination of SGES parameters that may need employing specific techniques to overcome practical difficulties; (iv) a short-term vs. long-term analysis depending on the thermal storage characteristics of GHE of different sizes; (v) the influence of groundwater that can have a moderating effect on fluid temperatures in both heating and cooling modes. Subsequently, thermo-mechanical interactions modeling issues are addressed that may be crucial in EGS that exhibit a dual functioning of heat exchangers and structural elements. Finally, a quite lengthy overview of the main software tools related to thermal and thermo-hydro-mechanical analysis of SGES that may be useful for practical applications is given. A unified software package incorporating all related features of all SGES may be a future aim.

Nodal solutions for Neumann systems with gradient dependence
Kamel Saoudi, Eadah Alzahrani, Dušan Repovš, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: We consider the following convective Neumann systems: $\begin{equation*}\left(\mathrm{S}\right)\qquad\left\{\begin{array}{ll}-\Delta_{p_1}u_1+\frac{|\nabla u_1|^{p_1}}{u_1+\delta_1}=f_1(x,u_1,u_2,\nabla u_1,\nabla u_2) \text{in}\;\Omega,\\ -\Delta _{p_2}u_2+\frac{|\nabla u_2|^{p_2}}{u_2+\delta_2}=f_2(x,u_1,u_2,\nabla u_1,\nabla u_2) \text{in}\;\Omega, \\ |\nabla u_1|^{p_1-2}\frac{\partial u_1}{\partial \eta }=0=|\nabla u_2|^{p_2-2}\frac{\partial u_2}{\partial \eta} \text{on}\;\partial\,\Omega,\end{array}\right.\end{equation*}$ where $\Omega$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ ($N\geq 2$) with a smooth boundary $\partial\,\Omega, \delta_1, \delta_2 > 0$ are small parameters, $\eta$ is the outward unit vector normal to $\partial\,\Omega, f_1, f_2: \Omega \times \mathbb{R}^2 \times \mathbb{R}^{2N} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ are Carathéodory functions that satisfy certain growth conditions, and $\Delta _{p_i}$ ($1< p_i < N,$ for $i=1,2$) are the $p$-Laplace operators $\Delta _{p_i}u_i=\mathrm{div}(|\nabla u_i|^{p_i-2}\nabla u_i)$, for $u_i \in W^{1,p_i}(\Omega).$ In order to prove the existence of solutions to such systems, we use a sub-supersolution method. We also obtain nodal solutions by constructing appropriate sub-solution and super-solution pairs. To the best of our knowledge, such systems have not been studied yet.

Ivan Pavlović, Peter Kramar, Selma Čorović, David Cukjati, Damijan Miklavčič, 2004, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a novel method for efficient tumor treatment in clinical environment. It combines local drug delivery and application of shorthigh voltage pulses, which permeabilize the plasma membrane by electroporation. Drug can enter only the cells with permeabilzed membrane. Recently, medical device CliniporatorTM for controlled electroporation was developed. Here, we present a web-application that extends the functionality of this medical device. The aim of the application is to collect, store and toallow the analysis of every ECT application using this medical device. The application helps transferring data collected by devčce during the electroporation process to the central database, and enables filling of medical records through the web forms. The application is based on technologies ASP, HTML, Flash, JavaScript, XML and others. The application main advantages are easy and rapid data access, scalability and independence of client computer operating system as well as easy application debugging and upgrading.
