Platonic configurations of points and lines
Jurij Kovič, Aleksander Simonič, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: We present some methods for constructing connected spatial geometric configurations (pq,nk) of points and lines, preserved by the same isometries of Euclidean space E3 as the predetermined Platonic solid. In this paper, we are mainly interested in configurations (n3), (n4), and (n5), but also in unbalanced configurations (p3,n4), (p3,n5), and (p4,n5).

Analysis of olive tree flowering behavior based on thermal requirements : a case study from the Northern Mediterranean region
Maja Podgornik, Jakob Fantinič, Tjaša Pogačar, Vesna Zupanc, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In recent years, early olive fruit drop has been observed in the northern Mediterranean regions, causing significant economic losses, although the exact cause remains unknown. Recent studies have identified several possible causes; however, our understanding of how olive trees respond to these environmental stresses remains limited. This study includes an analysis of selected meteorological and flowering data for Olea europaea L. “Istrska belica” to evaluate the use of a chilling and forcing model for a better understanding of flowering time dynamics under a changing climate. The flowering process is influenced by high diurnal temperature ranges (DTRs) during the pre-flowering period, resulting in earlier flowering. Despite annual fluctuations due to various climatic factors, an increase in DTRs has been observed in recent decades, although the mechanisms by which olive trees respond to high DTRs remain unclear. The chilling requirements are still well met in the region (1500 ± 250 chilling units), although their total has declined over the years. According to the Chilling Hours Model, chilling units—referred to as chilling hours—represent the number of hours with temperatures between 0 and 7.2 °C, accumulated throughout the winter season. Growing degree hours (GDHs) are strongly correlated with the onset of flowering. These results suggest that global warming is already affecting the synchrony between olive tree phenology and environmental conditions in the northern Mediterranean and may be one of the reason for the green drop.

Explicit microrelief-controlled decoupling of initial aerobic decay and leaching (in hummocks) and anaerobic decay (in hollows) in surface layers of a Sphagnum-dominated peatland
Marta Pérez-Rodríguez, A. Alten, Miloš Miler, J. Kaal, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Understanding decay processes in peat deposits is fundamental for predicting their role as sources or sinks of atmospheric carbon in a changing environment. It is known that the distribution of microhabitats –hummock, lawn and hollow– within peatlands affects organic matter quality and degradation, but microtopography-dependent carbon dynamics are poorly understood on the molecular level. We studied early decomposition across microtopography levels through analyses of superficial moss cores from a Sphagnum-dominated ombrotrophic peatland in Central Germany, and a 400-day incubation experiment, using analytical pyrolysis. Interpretations were aided by analysis of living vegetation and a deep peat core as reference. Stable and labile pools of polysaccharides dominated the pyrolyzates and played a crucial role in decay dynamics. Two distinct degradation processes emerged: 1) anaerobic decay, characterized by loss of polysaccharides and selective preservation of lignin and aliphatic OM; and 2) leaching of labile phenolic compounds (including sphagnum acid) and free carbohydrates with concomitant initial aerobic degradation and selective preservation of structural polysaccharides. The relative importance of these initial decay processes is spatially dependent; anaerobic decay was detectable in only some of the more evolved hollow layers, while aerobic degradation and leaching dominated in hummocks. Sphagnum acid’s molecular markers appeared useful tracers of early decay as it probably has a leaching-sensitive component in hyaline cells (corroborated by SEM micrographs) that is lost rapidly from hummocks, but not from hollows. Hence, the occurrence of sphagnum acid in peat cores is influenced by microrelief position during peat accretion. This study highlights how microhabitat variations within peatlands influence decay mechanisms on the molecular level.

Injective colorings of Sierpiński-like graphs and Kneser graphs
Boštjan Brešar, Sandi Klavžar, Babak Samadi, Ismael G. Yero, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Two relationships between the injective chromatic number and, respectively, chromatic number and chromatic index, are proved. They are applied to determine the injective chromatic number of Sierpiński graphs and to give a short proof that Sierpiński graphs are Class 1. Sierpiński-like graphs are also considered, including generalized Sierpiński graphs over cycles and rooted products. It is proved that the injective chromatic number of a rooted product of two graphs lies in a set of six possible values. Sierpiński graphs and Kneser graphs K(n,r) are considered with respect of being perfect injectively colorable, where a graph is perfect injectively colorable if it has an injective coloring in which every color class forms an open packing of largest cardinality. In particular, all Sierpiński graphs and Kneser graphs K(n,r) with n3r1, are perfect injectively colorable, while K(7,3) is not.

k-domination invariants on Kneser graphs
Boštjan Brešar, Tanja Dravec, María Gracia Cornet, Michael A. Henning, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In this follow-up to work of M.G. Cornet and P. Torres from 2023, where the k-tuple domination number and the 2-packing number in Kneser graphs K(n,r) were studied, we are concerned with two variations, the k-domination number, γk(K(n,r)), and the k-tuple total domination number, γt×k(K(n,r)), of K(n,r). For both invariants we prove monotonicity results by showing that γk(K(n,r))γk(K(n+1,r)) holds for any n2(k+r), and γt×k(K(n,r))γt×k(K(n+1,r)) holds for any n2r+1. We prove that γk(K(n,r))=γt×k(K(n,r))=k+r when nr(k+r), and that in this case every γk-set and γt×k-set is a clique, while γk(r(k+r)1,r)=γt×k(r(k+r)1,r)=k+r+1, for any k2. Concerning the 2-packing number, ρ2(K(n,r)), of K(n,r), we prove the exact values of ρ2(K(3r3,r)) when r10, and give sufficient conditions for ρ2(K(n,r)) to be equal to some small values by imposing bounds on r with respect to n. We also prove a version of monotonicity for the 2-packing number of Kneser graphs.

Digital equity and sustainability in higher education
Karmen Drljić, Sonja Čotar Konrad, Sonja Rutar, Tina Štemberger, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Digital equity, grounded in principles of equity and the ethics of care, is essential for ensuring quality higher education. It facilitates access, supports sustainability, and promotes inclusive education by addressing the technological dimensions of education. This study explores the relationship between digital equity and sustainability in higher education. A total of 167 students enrolled in initial teacher education programs at the University of Primorska, Faculty of Education, completed a questionnaire featuring the Digital Equity in Higher Education Scale and the Sustainability in Higher Education Scale. To achieve this study’s objectives, a principal factor analysis was conducted to validate the scales, and a multiple linear regression was employed to develop a predictive model. The findings revealed that digital equity in higher education comprises five dimensions as follows: (i) access to teachers who support the use of digital technology; (ii) access to digital technology and opportunities for its use; (iii) access to digital resources; (iv) access to culturally relevant software and applications; and (v) access to open-access resources. Sustainability in higher education encompasses two dimensions as follows: (i) collaborative problem solving and (ii) socioemotional aspects of sustainability. These dimensions interact in a complex manner. Key predictors of digital equity and sustainability included access to and use of digital technology, as well as collaborative problem solving. Importantly, this study highlighted the critical role of skilled teachers in facilitating the effective use of digital technology.

A contest for priority : nineteenth-century place-name etymologies of Transylvania at large
Ágoston Berecz, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The article identifies place-name etymologies as a powerful tool in constructing national spaces. Since place names derive from one language or another, often visibly so, competing nationalisms have used them to support territorial claims. This strategy may appear trivial, but it dates back no further than the Romantic period. The article traces the story of how, by the end of the nineteenth century, suggested place-name origins had become building blocks of two opposed visions of Romanian ethnogenesis. In a context of competing nation-building, these scholarly reconstructions were thinly disguised statements about whose ancestors had lived first in Transylvania—defined here in a broad sense as the eastern, Romanian- and Hungarian-speaking parts of the contemporary Kingdom of Hungary—and therefore who was entitled to political sovereignty. Place-name derivations had been little more than rhetorical ornaments until nationalist scholars seized on them following the 1848 revolutions. It was later still, in response to the questioning of Romance-speaking continuity in Dacia, that a positivist generation adjusted them to the principles of comparative linguistics and onomastics, the latter devised by German scholars for the study of national antiquities. With some refinements, the two views are still held today as the legitimate versions.

The Hungarian nationalities act of 1868 in operation (1868–1914)
Ágoston Berecz, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The article investigates explicit and implicit state language policies in Dualist Hungary (1867–1918), focusing on its eastern Romanian, Hungarian, and German-speaking parts. It sets the regulation and practices against the benchmark of the linguistic rights outlined in the 1868 Nationalities Act, the earliest modern, liberal language law on the continent. This document served as a central reference for contemporaries, an importance also bequeathed to historiographical accounts. Building on the applied linguist Janny Leung's analysis, the first half of the article engages with features that the Nationalities Act shared with most provisions enshrining legal multilingualism worldwide: a legitimating function, the under-specification of several key sections, and the fact that it referred to institutions on the move. Next, the article turns to more unambiguous paragraphs of the law, distinguishing between those that fit into the logic and were exploited for symbolic politics and those with more immediate, practical consequences for large sections of the citizenry. It further probes into the dispersed agency, ideological and pragmatic motives, and the center-periphery dynamics behind the (non-)implementation of the law.

Evaluation of a multilingual kindergarten model in Slovenia : insights from teachers, parents and children
Mojca Žefran, Silva Bratož, Sonja Rutar, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: This paper presents an in-depth evaluation of a Multilingual Kindergarten Model (MU-KI Koper) developed in Slovenia aimed at integrating pluralistic approaches to language learning into early childhood education. The model activities were carried out over a period of nine months. The data were collected through focus group discussions with parents and in-service preschool teachers engaged in the implementation of the model, an online questionnaire for parents and through semi-structured interviews with the children (aged 5-6) involved in the model implementation. We explored the efficacy of the model by focusing on the following categories: the suitability and perception of effectiveness of the activities in meeting the needs of the pre-school curriculum in the area of developing multilingual competences, the children’s response to the programme, and the parents’ expectations and their feedback on meeting their expectations regarding the implementation of the model. The findings reveal that the Multilingual Kindergarten Model effectively supports children’s cognitive, linguistic and affective development through age- and developmentally-appropriate activities, while fostering early language awareness, positive attitudes towards languages and cultural curiosity.
