Monitoring copper corrosion in bentonite by means of a coupled multi-electrode array
Tadeja Kosec, Miha Hren, Andraž Legat, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: This work focuses in monitoring the corrosion processes on copper in a slightly saline environment under oxic conditions, which simulated the first part of high-radioactive waste disposal in bentonite. Besides coupled multi-electrode arrays (CMEA), also electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were implemented. It was expected that this combination of methods would define the general corrosion rate, as well as the spatio-temporal evolution of anodic and cathodic processes. Anodic currents measured by CMEA showed that the corrosion rates decreased with time. Since maximum anodic activity switched between the electrodes, this situation was not individually valid for all the electrodes. At the end of exposure, different spectroscopic techniques were applied in order to identify the modes of corrosion and types of corrosion products. Uneven general corrosion without evident pits was indicated.

Monitoring the galvanic corrosion of copper–steel coupling in bentonite slurry during the early oxic phase using coupled multielectrode arrays

Povzetek: In the case of a two-part container for spent nuclear fuel, consisting of an iron-based inner structure with a copper coating, the potential perforation of copper through minor damage may result in intensive galvanic corrosion between copper and steel. The present work focuses on the corrosion of steel galvanically coupled to copper and exposed to a slightly saline environment under oxic conditions. The electrochemical processes on individual electrodes were monitored by coupled multielectrode arrays (CMEAs). The CMEAs were either in contact with groundwater saturated with bentonite or immersed in groundwater only. Very high galvanic corrosion currents were detected between carbon steel and pure copper in the early oxic phase. Additionally, the use of CMEAs further made it possible to monitor the distribution of cathodic currents around the steel electrode, which behaved anodically. Various microscopy and spectroscopy techniques were applied to identify the modes of corrosion and the type of corrosion products present at the end of the period of exposure.

Effect of the microstructural properties of copper on corrosion performance
Tadeja Kosec, Jure Voglar, Petra Močnik, Andraž Legat, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The aim of the study was to define the influence of microstructural properties on the electrochemical properties of copper in four different forms: copper in sheet form, copper doped with phosphorus, electroplated copper and copper wire. Open circuit potential and polarization resistance measurements were carried out in order to determine the electrochemical properties and corrosion rates of copper in 0.1 M NaCl solution in oxic conditions at ambient temperature. Statistical evaluation of the electrochemical data was performed in order to differentiate between the various forms of copper samples. Microstructural and electrochemical investigations were combined with electron microscopy and Raman analysis of the corrosion products after immersion of the copper samples in a 0.1 M NaCl solution for 30 days. The various morphologies of copper corrosion products were identified and analyzed by Raman spectroscopy for the various forms of copper.

Bioleaching process for copper extraction from waste in alkaline and acid medium
Ivica Ristović, Darina Štyriaková, Iveta Štyriakova, Jaroslav Šuba, Emilija Širadović, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Flotation wastes are becoming a valuable secondary raw material and source of many metals and semimetals worldwide with the possibilities of industrial recycling. The flotation tailings contain oxide and sulfide minerals that have not been sufficiently stabilized and form acidic mine waters, which in turn contaminate groundwater, rivers, and reservoi6sediments. An effective way to recycle these mine wastes is to recover the metals through leaching. While the focus is on acid bioleaching by iron- and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, alkaline leaching, and the removal of iron- containing surface coatings on sulfide minerals contribute significantly to the overall environmental efficiency of leaching. For this study, static and percolate bioleaching of copper from flotation waste at the Bor copper mine in Serbia was investigated in alkaline and then acidic environments. The aim of the study was to verify the effect of alkaline pH and nutrient stimulation on the bioleaching process and element extraction. A sample was taken from a mine waste site, which was characterized by XRF analyses. The concentration of leached copper was increased when copper oxide minerals dissolved during alkaline bioleaching. The highest copper yield during alkaline bioleaching was achieved after 9 days and reached 67%. The addition of nutrients in acidic medium enhanced the degradation of sulfide minerals and increased Cu recovery to 74%, while Fe and Ag recoveries were not significantly affected. Combined bioleaching with alkaline media and iron- and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in acidic media should be a good reference for ecological Cu recovery from copper oxide and sulfide wastes.
