Neogene block rotation inside the dextral fault zone at the Adriatic-European collision zone: reexamination of existing results
Lea Žibret, Gorazd Žibret, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The study focused on the post-Middle-Miocene stress analysis within the dextral strike-slip zone of the Dinaric fault system in the collision zone between the European plate, the Adria microplate and the Pannonian Domain. Block rotations were studied by re-examination of available paleostress data and their spatial distribution. The results are in agreement with the existing block model of the area, indicating CCW rotations within blocks between the main strike-slip faults in which rotation angle increases from W to E. The improved kinematic model, which is proposed in this study, will contribute to the knowledge on the kinematics within the complex collision zones and improve the seismic hazard models.

Microstructural characteristics of belite–sulfoaluminate cement clinkers with bottom ash
Lea Žibret, Andrej Ipavec, Sabina Dolenec, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The incorporation mechanism of impurities derived from raw materials into a belite-sulfoaluminate cement clinker with bottom ash was investigated in two raw mixtures. Alkalis lowered the sintering temperature by 50 °C. Ti stabilized β belite and prevented the formation of γ-belite. Sodalite solid solution showed an incomplete substitution of Si by Al. At a higher Ti content ferrite solid solution trended towards perovskite composition. Although calcium sulfoaluminate only fully developted at 1300 °C, the clinkers sintered at 1200 °C were the most reactive, as the presence of anhydrite at 1200 °C accelerated early hydration. Clinker reactivity decreased with an increase in sintering temperature.

Mojca Božič, Lea Žibret, Davor Kvočka, Alenka Mauko Pranjić, Boštjan Gregorc, Vilma Ducman, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The ever-growing worldwide demand for fired clay brick has resulted in the shortage of clay in many parts of the world. Therefore, there is a need to look for more sustainable alternative materials for the brick manufacturing. This study has investigated the potential use of the untreated Drava River sediment as a substitute material for clay in the production of fired bricks, with the research being conducted at both laboratory and industrial level. At the laboratory level, brick specimens were prepared by mixing clay with different river sediment proportions (ranging from 10 to 50 wt%) and were fired at 950 °C, with microstructural and various physical–mechanical properties being analyzed. Elevated carbonate content in Drava river sediment results in higher weight loss during firing at temperatures up to 950 °C, comparing to firing pure brick-making clay. Consequently, the addition of sediment increases porosity of fired bricks, which results in lowering of their mechanical properties. Results reveal that the compressive strength of the pure clay sample was 79.5 MPa, while the compressive strength of the sample with the addition of river sediment from 10 wt% to 50 wt% decreased from 73.9 MPa to 26.2 MPa, respectively. Despite the lower compressive strength, the 26.2 MPa is still above the limit value of 10 MPa specified in the standard EN 772–1 [1]. At the industrial level, hollow clay bricks were prepared with 20 wt% of the river sediment and fired in a tunnel kiln. Inclusion of the river sediment also decreased compressive strength from 38 MPa for pure mixture to 26 MPa for 20 wt% of the sediment addition, confirming usability of Drava sediment in brick production. In addition, LCA study has been conducted to evaluate the environmental impacts associated with the industrial production of classic bricks and bricks with the addition of the river sediment. The obtained results have shown that the bricks made with the addition of the Drava River sediment are sustainable and environmentally friendly and meet all the requirements specified in the relevant regulatory standard.

Clay rich river sediments calcined into precursors for alkali activated materials
Lea Žibret, Wolfgang Wisniewski, Barbara Horvat, Mojca Božič, Boštjan Gregorc, Vilma Ducman, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Alkali activated materials (AAMs), a potential alternative to cement-based products or ceramics, can incorporate large amounts of currently landfilled aluminosilicate rich materials such as calcined clay-rich river sediments collected at hydropower plant dams. Untreated fresh sediment and untreated aged sediment intended to serve as AAM precursors were calcined to increase their amorphous content, then activated by Na or K-based silicate or hydroxide solutions and cured at 60 ◦C for three days. Up to 30 mass % (ma%) of fly ash (FA) or ladle slag (LS) increased the mechanical performance. The phase composition and microstructure are analyzed using X-ray diffraction, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and mercury intrusion porosimetry to gain further insight into how the additives influence the final properties of the resulting AAMs. The main crystalline components of the prepared AAMs are quartz, illite/muscovite and feldspar. The amorphous content reaches up to 52.5 ma% in the Na-activated AAMs and up to 48.8 ma% in K-activated AAMs. The acquired results confirm the suitability of the investigated sediments as sole precursors for AAMs. The mechanical properties of the AAMs can be improved by adding FA and/or LS.

Building of the Al-Containing secondary raw materials registry for the production of low CO2 mineral binders in South-Eastern European region
Gorazd Žibret, Klemen Teran, Lea Žibret, Katarina Šter, Sabina Dolenec, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The bottleneck in the process for increasing production of low CO2 mineral binders, based on BCSA (belite sulfoaluminate) clinkers, is the availability of Al-rich raw materials. For that purpose, a new registry of Al-containing secondary mineral residues (industrial and mine waste) has been developed and is presented in this paper. The methodology of creating the registry consists of three main steps: Gathering ideas, consolidation of ideas, and implementation. In order to achieve this, the following methodology was adopted: Analysis of similar registries by potential end-users and seeking potential solutions and tools to be used, and conducting 3 rounds of stakeholder consultations via workshops in order to determine crucial parameters and features the registry needs to contain. The key discussion points were about which data the registry needs to contain, who shall be the potential users, and what are the stakeholderʼs expectations from the registryʼs portal. Potential individual registry variables were identified as being relevant/irrelevant or available/unavailable, and potential solutions for the registrys sustainability were explored. Each Al-rich waste/residue data entry is divided into 10 slots, describing legal status, location, quantities, chemical (REE included), mineralogical, physical and radiological properties, life-cycle assessment, additional data, and data relevancy. The registry will act as a matchmaking tool between producers/holders of Al-rich secondary raw materials and potential producers of cement clinkers.

Immunotherapy for metastatic non-small cell lung cancer : real-world data from an academic Central and Eastern European center
Marija Ivanović, Lea Knez, Ana Herzog, Mile Kovačević, Tanja Čufer, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Background. Immunotherapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) recently became the standard treatment for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Here, we present the first results of a real-world observational study on the effectiveness of ICI monotherapy in patients with advanced NSCLC treated at a single academic center in a Central and Eastern European (CEE) country. Materials and methods. Overall, 66 consecutive patients with advanced NSCLC treated with ICIs in everyday clinical practice, either with first-line pembrolizumab (26 patients) or second-line atezolizumab, nivolumab, or pembrolizumab (40 patients), from August 2015 to November 2018, were included. All data were retrieved from a hospital lung cancer registry, in which the data is collected prospectively. Results. Included patients had a median age of 64 years, most were male (55%), 6% were in performance status >/=2, and 18% had controlled central nervous system metastases at baseline. In first-line, the median progression-free survival (mPFS) was 9.3 months, while the median overall survival (mOS) was not reached. The 1-year overall survival (OS) was 62%. In second-line, the mPFS and mOS were 3.5 months and 9.9 months, respectively, with a 1-year OS of 35%. In the overall population, adverse events of any grade were recorded in 79% of patients and of severe grade (3-4) in 12% of patients. Conclusion. The first real-world outcomes of NSCLC immunotherapy from a CEE country suggest comparable effectiveness to those observed in clinical trials and other real-world series, mainly coming from North America and Western European countries. Further data to inform on the real-world effectiveness of immunotherapy worldwide are needed.

Content analysis of Advance Directives completed by patients with advanced cancer as part of an Advance Care Planning intervention : insights gained from the ACTION trial
Marieke Zwakman, Johannes JM van Delden, Glenys Caswell, Luc Deliens, F. Ingravallo, Lea J. Jabbarian, Anna Thit Johnsen, Ida Joanna Korfage, Alenka Mimič, C. Møller Arnfeldt, Urška Lunder, Branka Červ, Anja Simonič, Hana Kodba Čeh, Polona Ozbič, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Purpose. Writing an Advance Directive (AD) is often seen as a part of Advance Care Planning (ACP). ADs may include specific preferences regarding future care and treatment and information that provides a context for healthcare professionals and relatives in case they have to make decisions for the patient. The aim of this study was to get insight into the content of ADs as completed by patients with advanced cancer who participated in ACP conversations. Methods. A mixed methods study involving content analysis and descriptive statistics was used to describe the content of completed My Preferences forms, an AD used in the intervention arm of the ACTION trial, testing the effectiveness of the ACTION Respecting Choices ACP intervention. Results. In total, 33% of 442 patients who received the ACTION RC ACP intervention completed a My Preferences form. Document completion varied per country: 10.4% (United Kingdom), 20.6% (Denmark), 29.2% (Belgium), 41.7% (the Netherlands), 61.3% (Italy) and 63.9% (Slovenia). Content analysis showed that 'maintaining normal life' and 'experiencing meaningful relationships' were important for patients to live well. Fears and worries mainly concerned disease progression, pain or becoming dependent. Patients hoped for prolongation of life and to be looked after by healthcare professionals. Most patients preferred to be resuscitated and 44% of the patients expressed maximizing comfort as their goal of future care. Most patients preferred 'home' as final place of care. Conclusions. My Preferences forms provide some insights into patients' perspectives and preferences. However, understanding the reasoning behind preferences requires conversations with patients.
