At the northern edge of the Adriatic: First records of the invasive Caulerpa cylindracea in the Gulf of Trieste
Martina Orlando-Bonaca, Lovrenc Lipej, Borut Mavrič, Domen Trkov, Neža Leban, Leon Lojze Zamuda, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The non-indigenous green alga Caulerpa cylindracea is among the most invasive macroalgae in the Mediterranean Sea and has progressively expanded throughout the Adriatic basin since its first record in 2000. This study reports the first records of C. cylindracea in the Gulf of Trieste, the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea. The species was first recorded in September 2022 at San Bartolomeo (Italy), where only a few thalli were recorded within a Cymodocea nodosa meadow. In September 2023, two thalli were recorded at Lazaret, representing the first record of the species along the Slovenian coast. Targeted surveys conducted between 2023 and 2025 documented the current spatial extent of the species at both sites and revealed an additional population at the Rex site, between the towns of Koper and Izola. At San Bartolomeo, C. cylindraceaoccupied an estimated 14,497 m² in July 2023 and 12,331 m² in September 2024. At Lazaret, the species occupied an esti-mated 12,114 m² by September 2025, while the newly recorded population at the Rex site, between the towns of Koper and Izola, covered approximately 3,000 m². Because the surveyed areas were not monitored systematically before the initial de-tections, these estimates represent the observed spatial extent of the populations at the time of each survey rather than a quantified rate of spread. These findings confirm the establishment of C. cylindracea in the Gulf of Trieste, extend its known distribution to the northernmost part of the Adriatic Sea, and provide a baseline for future monitoring and assessment of its ecological impacts in this environmentally heterogeneous coastal basin.

Memo workshop on NonIndigenous Species: progress across MSFD criteria
Chiara Magliozzi, Ana Cristina Cardoso, Gaston Alurralde, Cátia Bartilotti, Ana Fortič, Martina Orlando-Bonaca, Domen Trkov, 2026, končno poročilo o rezultatih raziskav

Povzetek: The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) hosted a workshop on marine NonIndigenous Species (NIS) within the framework of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). The workshop, which took place from 10 to 12 February 2026, gathered experts from Member States and representatives of marine Regional Sea Conventions to discuss progress on monitoring, measures, and targets related to NIS. Experts acknowledged that progress has been made, but that challenges still exist in calculating monitoring efforts, setting effective targets, and assessing the impact of NIS on marine biodiversity, highlighting the need for further action to protect Europe's marine ecosystems. Researchers noted that current efforts to monitor the spread of NIS in Europe's seas are insufficient to fully understand the harm they cause, and that more work is needed to develop a shared approach to study their impact on marine ecosystems. A consensus was achieved on the need to assess the effects of NIS, which is a complex task that requires more research and cooperation. To address this challenge, the JRC will continue to work with countries experts to develop new methods and strategies for monitoring and managing NIS, with the ultimate goal of protecting Europe's marine biodiversity.

First Evidence of the Presence of Okenia picoensis Paz-Sedano, Ortigosa & Pola, 2017 (Gastropoda: Nudibranchia) in the Adriatic Sea
Marco Fantin, Saul Ciriaco, Lisa Faresi, Chiara Scrigner, Juri Vecchi, Domen Trkov, Lovrenc Lipej, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The authors report the finding of some specimens (8 sightings) of Okenia picoensis (Gastropoda: Nudibranchia) at three different sites in Croatia (northern Adriatic Sea). Although this seaslug species has only recently been described, this record confirms its rapid spread throughout the Mediterranean Sea. This finding represents the first substantiated record in the Adriatic Sea.

Dataset for the article "From loss to life: how empty Pinna nobilis shells enhance motile macroinvertebrate habitats in soft-bottom environments" : version v1
Ana Fortič, Domen Trkov, Valentina Pitacco, 2026, raziskovalni podatki

Povzetek: This dataset contains data obtained with underwater surveys using quadrats in the Gulf of Trieste (Adriatic Sea, Mediterranean Sea). The aim was to assess the function of empty Pinna nobilis shells as refuges for motile epibenthic macroinvertebrates across vegetated and unvegetated habitats. The dataset includes sampling location information, data about P. nobilis shells, species list and whole mobile invertebrates community dataset.

New records of marine biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea (April 2026)
Argyro Zenetos, Fares Nasser Abd El-Gwaad, Ahmed Mohamed Al-Beak, Neža Leban, Domen Trkov, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: This collective article presents new information about 18 species occurring in 12 Mediterranean countries from the Alboran Sea to the Levantine Sea. Five lessepsian species namely Erugosquilla massavensis, Syrnola fasciata, Plocamopherus ocellatus, Maritigrella fuscopunctata and Siganus javus have spread within 2025 to neighbouring MSFD areas. Another five are here reported as first country records [Polyandrocarpa zorritensis (Malta), Gonioinfradens giardi (Italy), Istiblennius meleagris (Egypt), Epinephelus fasciatus (Israel), Lophocladia trichoclados (Montenegro)]. Cladophora patentiramea has spread from the Levantine to the Aegean Sea, while Pinctada radiata has reached Granada, and Cádiz. The Atlantic fish Enchelycore anatina and Synodus synodus have expanded their distribution to Montenegro and Syria respectively. Three rare native species are reported for first time at country level, while a fourth (Mobula birostris) has made an appearance more than a century after its first Mediterranean record.

From loss to life: how empty Pinna nobilis shells enhance motile macroinvertebrate habitats in soft-bottom environments
Ana Fortič, Valentina Pitacco, Domen Trkov, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The noble pen shell (Pinna nobilis) is experiencing mass mortality events across the Mediterranean Sea. In the northern Adriatic, as in many other regions, soft-bottom habitats are now covered with numerous empty shells. To assess their ecological role, we conducted underwater SCUBA surveys using quadrats in 2023 and 2024. We examined the function of empty shells as refuges for motile epibenthic macroinvertebrates across vegetated and unvegetated habitats. Specifically, we compared invertebrate diversity among habitats with and without shells, assessed the influence of shell orientation on community composition, and identified taxa characteristic of each habitat type using non-invasive methods that did not displace shells. Most shells remained upright, though their density and orientation varied among the six study locations. We recorded fauna from seven classes, with malacostracans and gastropods being the most species-rich groups. Biodiversity metrics differed markedly among the four microhabitat types (sediment, sediment with shells, meadow, meadow with shells), reaching the highest values in meadows with shells and the lowest in bare sediment. Malacostracans and polyplacophorans were significantly more abundant in samples containing shells, while other taxa showed no consistent trends. Shell orientation did not affect the composition of motile fauna, but distinct assemblages were associated with specific habitat types. These findings highlight the ecological importance of P. nobilis shells as microhabitats that enhance coastal biodiversity even after the death of the organism and underline the potential negative consequences of their degradation or removal.
