1. The role of volunteers in supporting the psychosocial well-being of hospitalised children with cancer : a narrative review and recommendations for clinical practiceIvana Kreft, Janez Jazbec, 2026, pregledni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Children undergoing cancer treatment face repeated, prolonged hospitalisations carrying substantial risks of psychological distress, social isolation, and impaired development. Volunteers offering structured non-medical activities are widely employed to complement professional psychosocial care in paediatric oncology settings, yet empirical evidence examining their role specifically—as distinct from professionally delivered psychosocial interventions—remains sparse. This narrative review, conducted in accordance with SANRA criteria and drawing on a structured search of PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar (2000–2025), supplemented by a targeted verification search in July 2026, synthesises the theoretical and preliminary empirical basis for volunteer involvement, critically evaluates associated clinical risks, and proposes evidence-informed recommendations for paediatric oncology clinical practice. Three theoretical frameworks provide the conceptual grounding for volunteer activities: developmental psychological models (Piaget; Erikson), stress and coping theory (Lazarus and Folkman), and the biopsychosocial model (Engel). Indirect empirical evidence—derived predominantly from professionally delivered interventions—supports short-term benefits of structured distraction, play, and social activities on procedural anxiety, pain experience, and sense of social inclusion; the sole study examining volunteer-facilitated activities specifically in paediatric oncology reported meaningful reductions in distress and high family satisfaction. Eight categories of clinical risk are identified, including physical and psychological overload, erosion of child autonomy, suppression of authentic emotional expression, and inadequate coordination with healthcare staff. Six practice recommendations are proposed, centred on a working definition of the volunteer role, mandatory pre-access training, genuine individualisation including cultural adaptation, multidisciplinary-team-led coordination, and structured programme evaluation. Volunteer involvement can meaningfully complement professional psychosocial care when delivered within a structured, supervised, and multidisciplinary-team-coordinated framework. The paediatric oncology team occupies a pivotal role in realising the potential benefits while safeguarding children from associated risks. Prospective research employing standardised volunteer programme definitions and validated child-reported outcome measures is urgently needed to build an evidence base commensurate with the clinical importance of this practice. 4. Healthcare student engagement with health-related content through Netflix mini-series : a qualitative studyNino Fijačko, Špela Metličar, Gregor Štiglic, Lucija Gosak, Roger Watson, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Background Conventional lecture-based teaching often struggles to keep students engaged and attentive throughout the class. Television and film, when used as educational tools, can promote a compassionate, person-centered approach to healthcare. Film-based education enhances critical thinking and allows students safely to explore and express their professional values and beliefs. This qualitative research aimed to explore how a Netflix mini-series could engage healthcare students and enhance their interest in learning, rather than its direct instructional effectiveness. Method In September 2023, the “Simulation and Games in Nursing Education” international summer school featured daily episodes from “The Nurse” Netflix mini-series, each lasting 40 to 60 min. Healthcare students attended this event as part of their summer school program. We employed a six-step thematic analysis framework to analyze the collected data and Sankey diagrams were used for visualization. Results Our research involved 28 healthcare students from six European countries, predominantly women (82%, 23/28), with a mean age of 22 years (SD 2.35). None had seen the series before the summer school. The analysis revealed ‘Cinenurducation’ as the main theme, supported by three subthemes: (1) Observational learning and Critical thinking; (2) Cinenurducation feelings; and (3) Relationships and Personal behaviors. Conclusion While Netflix mini-series can provide engagement opportunities, this research underscores the importance of distinguishing between engagement and educational effectiveness in using media as a teaching tool. Clinical trial number None. Ključne besede: Netflix, drama, serial killer, learning, healthcare, nursing Objavljeno v DiRROS: 10.03.2026; Ogledov: 278; Prenosov: 277

5. Nursing students’ views on men in nursing : a gender diversity challenge in the healthcare workforceMirko Prosen, Tamara Čekada, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Background Nursing remains a female-dominated profession, with men often facing societal stereotypes and professional challenges that limit their representation. Gender-based misconceptions about caregiving roles and masculinity influence the perception of men in nursing, posing barriers to inclusivity. This study explores nursing students’ perceptions of men in nursing, focusing on the prevalence of gender stereotypes, their potential impact on career decisions and the ethical implications of such misperceptions. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted on a convenience sample of 184 nursing students in Slovenia. Data were collected through an online questionnaire using the GEMINI (Gender Misconceptions of Men in Nursing) Scale. Internal consistency of the adapted scale was confirmed with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.859. Results Findings reveal that while some gender stereotypes persist, most students hold neutral or positive attitudes toward men in nursing. The overall median GEMINI score was 33.00, significantly lower than the theoretical median of 51 (p < 0.001), indicating generally low levels of gender-based misconceptions. Postgraduate students reported lower misconceptions (Me = 30.50) compared to undergraduates (Me = 33.50). Male students had a slightly higher median score (34.50) than female students (33.00), suggesting they may hold slightly more stereotypical views. Challenges included societal biases, limited mentorship, and struggles with professional identity, particularly in clinical settings and specialties perceived as traditionally female-dominated. Students with family members in nursing reported a median of 33.50, compared to 33.00 among those without, suggesting a modest exposure effect, although not statistically significant. Conclusions Addressing gender-based misconceptions through education and public awareness is critical for fostering diversity and creating a more inclusive nursing workforce. Future efforts should focus on redefining nursing as a gender-neutral profession. Curricula should incorporate discussions about diversity, gender equity, and professional identity development, fostering inclusivity and reducing stereotypes early in students’ careers. Targeted mentorship programs, increased male representation in nursing leadership, and reframing nursing as a profession that values both technical expertise and emotional intelligence are essential strategies for breaking down persistent stereotypes and improving gender diversity in the field. 8. Attitudes towards spirituality and spiritual care among nursing employees in hospitalsTanja Montanič Starc, Igor Karnjuš, Katarina Babnik, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Introduction: Understanding spirituality and spiritual care is a prerequisite for holistic care. The research goal was to describe nurses' attitudes towards spirituality and spiritual care. Methods: The study was carried out between 2015 and 2016 using a quantitative non-experimental method. The Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale Questionnaire was given to a sample of 182 nursing care employees, mostly women (n = 153, 88.4 %), with completed higher (n = 93, 53.8 %) or secondary (n = 75, 43.4 %) education, from four Slovenian hospitals. The questionnaire had adequate internal consistency (Cronbach alpha = 0.83). Results: The highest agreement (x = 4.27, s = 0.82) was reached on the statement which describes spiritual care as respecting patient's privacy, dignity, cultural and religious beliefs. Participants also agreed with the statement that they provide spiritual care by demonstrating kindness, care, and cheerfulness (x = 4.2, s = 0.76), but they expressed uncertainty about the statement that spirituality and spiritual care are fundamental aspects of nursing care (x = 2.88, s = 1.08). Discussion and conclusion: Participants connect spirituality with an understanding of themselves and the world, rather than only with religion and sacral objects. The research has confirmed the findings of previous Slovenian studies that nurses give priority to meeting patients' physical needs before spiritual ones probably also as a result of a lack of knowledge and professional guidance on spiritual care.
