1. Utilisation of biomass and waste-derived ashes in the extrusion of fired clay bricks : mechanical properties, microstructure and leaching behaviourLea Žibret, Majda Pavlin, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: With the trend towards renewable alternatives to fossil fuel sources, further uses of biomass and waste ash instead of landfilling are being explored. This study investigates the potential of fly and bottom ashes from burning wood (alone or with coal), as well as coal-co-combustion of municipal solid waste, sewage sludge, and paper sludge, for use in extruded fired bricks fired at 950 °C. The influence of ash content (0 to 15 wt% ash) and ash type (10 wt% ash) on the physical, mechanical, and microstructural properties of the fired bricks was studied. The compressive strength of the reference sample without ash was 72.6 MPa and decreased gradually with an increasing ash content. Open porosity ranged from 28% (reference, no ash) to 43% (15 wt% ash), and water absorption from 12% to 28%, reflecting the pore-forming role of the added ashes. All samples had a compressive strength above the 10 MPa limit specified in EN 772-1, except for bricks with 5 wt% paper sludge bottom ash (B4, W-PS BA). The leaching concentrations indicate that heavy metals were effectively immobilised within the ceramic structure of the fired bricks, relative to inert and non-hazardous waste limit values under EN 12457-2 test conditions. These results suggest that 5% substitution of primary raw materials with ashes may contribute to the production of bricks with reduced environmental impact and improved resource efficiency. The study provides a basis for further formulation of extruded bricks with biomass and waste-derived ashes. 4. Effects of boriding and niobium carbide coating on the microstructure, hardness, and tribocorrosion properties of Vanadis 6 tool steelVenu Yarasu, Bojan Podgornik, Tadeja Kosec, Peter Jurči, Ali Günen, Peter Orihel, Sabri Alkan, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Vanadis 6 (V6) cold work tool steel is widely used in cold forming applications due to its high wear resistance and toughness. However, tribocorrosion remains a major challenge in aggressive manufacturing conditions limiting the tool life. This study investigates the effect of boride and niobium (NbC) coatings on the microstructure, hardness, and tribocorrosion properties of V6 tool steel. Both uncoated and coated samples were tested in 0.1 M NaCl (pH 7), 0.001 M NaOH (pH 11), and Na-tetraborate (pH 10) solutions. The microstructural changes and phase analysis were examined via a scanning electron microscope coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and X-ray diffraction, while the hardness was evaluated using Vickers microhardness (HV). The tribocorrosion tests were performed by monitoring the open circuit potential (OCP) with a reciprocating pin-on-disk configuration. Wear surface analysis was conducted using 3D confocal microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and SEM-EDS techniques. The findings indicated that the application of coatings enhanced the surface hardness from 710 HV30 to 2000 HV0.1 and 1550 HV0.1 for boride and NbC coatings, respectively. During the tribocorrosion experiments, the samples coated with NbC and borides consistently displayed the highest open-circuit potential (OCP) in all the solutions. These results confirm that both NbC and borides improved the tribological and corrosion resistance of Vanadis 6 steel, with the NbC coating offering a more effective and stable protective layer. The outcome of this study emphasizes the critical role of coatings and the appropriate choice of electrolytes for comparative evaluation in the tribocorrosion behavior of cold work tool steels. 7. Two-photon 3D printing of functional microstructures inside living cellsMaruša Mur, Aljaž Kavčič, Uroš Jagodič, Rok Podlipec, Matjaž Humar, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: 3D printing is transforming manufacturing and biomedicine, yet it has not been demonstrated inside living cells. Additionally, there is no method to deliver micron-scale, free-standing solid microstructures directly into the cytosol of non-phagocytic cells. Here, both of these challenges are addressed by fabricating custom-shaped polymeric microstructures directly inside living cells using two-photon polymerization. A bio-compatible photoresist is injected into cells and selectively polymerized with a femtosecond laser, creating intracellular structures with submicron resolution. Structures of various shapes are printed in live cells, including a 10 elephant, barcodes for cell tracking, diffraction gratings for remote readout, and microlasers. The printed structures in cells can affect the cell biology. The demonstrated top-down intracellular biofabrication approach, combined with functional photoresists, may enable new applications in intracellular sensing, biomechanical manipulation, bioelectronics, and targeted drug delivery. These embedded structures could provide novel control over the intracellular environment, allowing engineering of cellular properties beyond natural limits and genetic engineering. 8. How vegetation alters the properties of raindropsKatarina Zabret, Mark Bryan Alivio, Urša Vilhar, Mojca Šraj, Nejc Bezak, Klaudija Lebar, Andrej Vidmar, 2025, objavljeni povzetek znanstvenega prispevka na konferenci Povzetek: The process of rainfall interception is an important part of the hydrological cycle in many regions. The rainfall which is intercepted by vegetation evaporates into the atmosphere, while throughfall and stemflow contribute to runoff generation, control soil moisture and affect soil erosion. These topics are closely connected to the aims of the ongoing bilateral research project between University of Ljubljana, Slovenian Forestry Institute and TU Wien. The project focuses on the understanding of the effect of meteorological and vegetation characteristics on changes in raindrop microstructure. The rain drop diameter and velocity of raindrops under vegetation, which reach the ground by dripping from leaves and branches as throughfall, are different than diameter and velocity of rain drops above the canopy.
