Napredno iskanje omogoča omejevanje števila rezultatov iskanja z vnosom iskalnih pojmov različnih kategorij v iskalna okna in uporabo logičnih operatorjev (IN, ALI ter IN NE).

Application of self-organizing maps to explore the interactions of microorganisms with soil properties in fruit crops under different management and pedo-climatic conditions

Povzetek: Self-organizing maps (SOMs) are a class of neural network algorithms able to visually describe a high-dimensional dataset onto a two-dimensional grid. SOMs were explored to classify soils based on an array of physical, chemical, and biological parameters. Methods: The SOM analysis was performed considering soil physical, chemical, and microbial data gathered from an array of apple orchards and strawberry plantations managed by organic or conventional methods and located in different European climatic zones. Results: The SOM analysis considering the “climatic zone” categorical variables was able to discriminate the samples from the three zones for both crops. The zones were associated with different soil textures and chemical characteristics, and for both crops, the Continental zone was associated with microbial parameters—including biodiversity indices derived from the NGS data analysis. However, the SOM analysis based on the “management method” categorical variables was not able to discriminate the soils between organic and integrated management. Conclusions: This study allowed for the Soil Syst. 2025, 9, 10 https://doi.org/10.3390/soilsystems9010010 Soil Syst. 2025, 9, 10 2 of 14 discrimination of soils of medium- and long-term fruit crops based on their pedo-climatic characteristics and associating these characteristics to some indicators of the soil biome, pointing to the possibility of better understanding the interactions among diverse variables, which could support unraveling the intricate web of relationships that define soil quality.

Development of the fish invitrome for animal-free environmental risk assessment of chemicals
Marion Revel, Ksenia J Groh, Jessica Bertoli, Mihai-Ovidiu Degeratu, Melanie Fischer, Stephan Fischer, Jarno Hoekman, Barbara Jozef, Roman Li, Anže Županič, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Given the need to reduce animal testing for environmental risk assessment, we aim to develop a fish invitrome, an alternative fish modular framework capable of predicting chemical toxicity in fish without the use of animals. The central module of the framework is the validated RTgill-W1 cell line assay that predicts fish acute toxicity of chemicals (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Test Guideline (OECD TG) 249). Expanding towards prediction of chronic toxicity, the fish invitrome includes two other well-advanced modules for chemical bioaccumulation/biotransformation and inhibition of fish growth. This framework is expected to continuously evolve with the development of modules that predict, for instance, neurotoxicity and reproductive toxicity. We envisage the fish invitrome framework to become part of the broader academic field of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), where it will remain flexible and open to integration of new developments from research groups around the world. To accelerate the development and uptake of this framework, we strive for transdisciplinarity, integrating both natural and social sciences, along with broader stakeholder interactions. A stepwise socio-technical approach has been chosen, where mainstreaming the fish invitrome involves progressive adoption across various ecotoxicological contexts. The framework will be co-designed with stakeholders from academia, industry, and regulatory bodies. Rather than aiming for immediate regulatory acceptance, this approach aims to build trust and familiarity with fish cell line-based testing among stakeholders. By doing so, it encourages broader use of the framework in practical applications while gradually overcoming institutional, cultural, and technical barriers. Additionally, establishing a clear roadmap for mainstreaming the fish invitrome will help identify and address challenges to its uptake, ensuring a smoother transition to non-organismal testing methodologies.

First implementation of the MediSkew index in the Cymodocea nodosa meadows of the Boka Kotorska Bay (Montenegro) and assessment of the ecological status
Vesna Mačić, Nikola Đorđević, Martina Orlando-Bonaca, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The seagrass Cymodocea nodosa is a protected species and one of the most important habitat engineers in the Mediterranean Sea. Therefore, the assessment of the status of its meadows is of great importance for the planning of conservation measures, and the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). This is of special importance in the areas where Posidonia oceanica is not present or does not dominate, as it is the case of the Boka Kotorska. The MediSkew index which has already been successfully implemented in the northern Adriatic Sea was for the first time tested in the Boka Kotorska Bay (southern Adriatic Sea). First results show that the ecological status at five sites is very good and good, while the status at one site is moderate. Furthermore, the MediSkew index is applicable in different geographical areas and it is sensitive to different environmental conditions, so the application of this methodology is strongly recommended for further monitoring of Cymodocea meadows and assessment of the ecological status.
