1451. Electrochemotherapy with cisplatin of breast cancer tumor modules in a male patientMartina Reberšek, Tanja Čufer, Zvonimir Rudolf, Gregor Serša, 2000, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Background. The metastases of breast cancer in a male patient were treated with electrochemotherapy by intratumoral injection of cisplatin. Electrochemotherapy is chemotherapy with the subsequent local application of electric pulses to the tumor nodules in order to increase drug delivery into the cells. Case report. Cutaneous metastases of breast cancer were treated with the intratumoral administration of cisplatin and by 8 electric pulses (1300 V/cm) applied a minute later to each cutaneous metastasis. The treatmentresulted in complete response of two electrochemotherapy treated cutaneous metastases and partial response of the third metastasis. In cutaneous metastases treated with intratumoral administartion of cisplatin without electric pulses, only partial response was obtained. Conclusion. This study confirms that electrochemotherapy with cisplatin is effective in the treatment of breast cancer metastases, too, as it was already proved for electrochemotherapy with bleomycin. 1452. Antibodies to p53 - can they serve as tumor markers in patients with malignantlymphomas?Barbara Jezeršek Novaković, Srdjan Novaković, 2000, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Background. Tumor suppressor gene p53 is mutated in approximately 21% of patients with nonHodgkin's lymphomas (the percentage varying from 0 up to 67% depending upon the histological type). Most of the mutations are point missense mutations resulting in nuclear accumulation of altered protein. Roughly one third of patients with overexpression of p53 protein develop circulating anti p53 antibodies. The present study was aimed at defining the usefulness of serial serological determinations of autoantibodies to p53 for clinical follow up of NHL patients. Patients and methods. Serum levels of antibodies to p53 were determined in various time intervals in three lymphoma patients (who had elevated serum levels at the time of diagnosis) for maximum two years using the commercially available ELISA kit p53-Autoantikoerper ELISA2. Generation. Results. In all three cases the temporal patterns of anti p53 antibodies reflected accurately disease progression or regression, and even foretold a relapse ten months in advance. The reflection of disease regression by autoantibodies lagged approximately three months behind the morphological disappearance of the disease due to a long half life of the antibodies. Conclusion. Our results confirmed the usefulness of antibodies to p53 as tumor markers for follow up of lymphoma patients, yet the subset of patients that could be appropriately followed up with this method is very limited due to the low proportion of patients that develop immune response to p53 protein. 1453. Factors influencing rehabilitation in patients with head and neck cancerIrena Hočevar-Boltežar, Alojz Šmid, Miha Žargi, Avgust Župevc, Igor Fajdiga, Janez Fischinger, Ana Jarc, 2000, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Purpose. The purpose of the prospective study was to identify the factors adversely influencing the post-treatment rehabilitation in patients with head and neck cancer. Patients and methods. One hundred and ten patients with oral cavity, pharyngeal and laryngeal cancer were examined before surgical treatment in order to find unfavorable factors: hearing loss, defective teeth, impaired pulmonary function, and speech disorders. The patients evaluated the success of their rehabilitation 12 months after the treatment. The influence of possible unfavorable factors, tumor site, and type of surgeryon speech, swallowing and reintegration competence was determinated. Results. The site of the tumor and the type of surgery did not influence the quality of rehabilitation in general. Defective teeth influenced the ability of swallowing but not the speech. Hearing loss impaired the patient's reintegration in their home environment. Impaired pulmonary function did not affect patient's speech. Speech was the poorest in laryngectomized patients. However, about two thirds of the patients were satisfied with their capabilityof speech, swallowing and their rehabilitation in general. Conclusions. Early identification of unfavorable factors, and individually planned rehabilitation can ensure a suitable quality of life for patients thathave undergone surgery for head and neck cancer. 1454. Do we need axillary dissection in early breast cancer?Tanja Čufer, 2000, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci Povzetek: Background. In the existing paradigm of the invasive breast cancer, the treatment with the axillary lymphnode dissection (ALND) and histologic stagingof the axilla, which is associated with a substantial morbidity, is considered necessary for the treatment decision and local control of disease. However paradigms are changing and, since primary tumor characteristics are increasingly used for treatment decision and since there is a trend towards the broad application of preoperative chemotherapy, ALND is less and less important for the treatment planning. In a small subgroup of patients in whom the information on nodal status is still important it can be obtained accurately by the sentinel lymph node biopsy. For good local control of the disease, ALND can be replaced with irradiation of the axilla with substantially lesser morbidity. Conclusions. Abandoning ALND together with breast conserving surgery is one of the major steps towards less mutilating surgery leading to a better quality of life of breast cancer patients at the end of this millennium. 1459. Alternative alkali activators based on waste bottle glass and waste cathode-ray tube glassKatja Koenig, Katja Traven, Vilma Ducman, 2021, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci Povzetek: Alkali-activated binders are an environmentally friendly alternative to Portland cement, particularly when locally-available raw materials are used. It is well known that alkali activation with a sodium silicate activator generates a hardened binder with higher compressive strength than a binder hardened with sodium hydroxide. As the alkali-silicate activators are produced through energy extensive processes, and their use can significantly increase the carbon footprint of the final products, it is of great significance to develop alternative alkaline activators based on locally-available waste materials. This article assesses the potential to apply waste bottle glass and waste cathode-ray tube (CRT) glass to synthesise alternative alkali activators by the hydrothermal method. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was used to determine silicon and aluminium content in the alternative activators. The influence of dissolution process parameters (time, temperature, particle size) on the concentrations of silicon and aluminium in the alternative activators was investigated. The alternative activators with silicon concentration up to 19 g/L and aluminium concentration up to 0.9 g/L were prepared at T = 120 °C and boiling time 24 h. The alternative alkali activators and, for comparison, also commercial sodium silicate were used in the alkali activation of fly ash powder. The formed pastes were cured at 70 °C for 72 h. Mechanical strength measurements indicated that alkali activation of fly ash with the optimal alternative activator yielded hardened paste with compressive strength of 33 MPa. However, the compressive strength of hardened paste prepared from fly ash and commercial sodium silicate reached 70 MPa. Part of this difference can be ascribed to the lower density of hardened pastes prepared with alternative activators.
