Abstract:Questo articolo riflette sulla ricerca condotta al fine di ricostruire la vita del mio bisnonno, un cittadino asburgico di lingua slovena, che nacque nel 1890 in un paese del Litorale austriaco, poi passato all’Italia. La sua vicenda, connessa all’emigrazione e all’italianizzazione, è fondamentale per analizzare questi fenomeni a inizio Novecento sul confine orientale italiano. L’articolo si focalizza sulle difficoltà riscontrate nella ricerca, il fatto di essere apparentemente arrivata troppo tardi e la carenza di studi specifici preesistenti, e sulle soluzioni trovate. In particolare è evidenziato il ricorso a fonti orali: memorie familiari, interviste e lettere con un forte carattere di oralità.

Title:Arriving too Late : Lost (and Rediscovered) Orality between Italy and Slovenia
Abstract:This paper focuses on the research regarding the reconstruction of the life of my great-grandfather, a Habsburg citizen speaking Slovene, born in 1890 in a village in the Austrian Littoral, then part of Italy. His life, connected to emigration and Italianization, is fundamental to analyze these phenomena at the beginning of 20th century on the Italian Eastern border. This paper focuses on the difficulties encountered during the research, like arriving too late and the lack of specific preexisting studies, and on the solutions found, in particular the use of oral sources: family memories, interviews and letters with elements of orality.
