1. Growth rates of the critically endangered fan mussel Pinna nobilis in the Slovenian sea (northern Adriatic)Valentina Pitacco, Ana Fortič, Domen Trkov, Borut Mavrič, Ciril Mlinar, Lovrenc Lipej, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: The fan mussel Pinna nobilis is a bivalve endemic to the Mediterranean Sea that is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Its decline is due to a disease that has led to mass mortalities throughout the Mediterranean. The Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic) used to harbour one of the densest populations of P. nobilis, but since 2019, it has also been affected by this disease. The aim of this work was to analyse the growth of P. nobilis in the Slovenian part of the Gulf, with 3 case studies: (1) in situ measurement of adults before the mass mortality event (MME), (2) in situ measurement of juveniles after the MME and (3) ex situ measurement of juveniles kept in the laboratory. The pre-MME growth rate was comparable to that in other areas of the Gulf. In the first years of life, the growth rate of P. nobilis is higher than the growth rate reported in the southern Adriatic, and comparable to the growth rate in the Spanish lagoons. This is probably related to the physico-chemical conditions and confirms the potential of the area for restoration actions. Captive growth of juveniles could be an effective conservation measure, although juveniles kept in the laboratory grow more slowly than those in the sea, probably because of their lower immune response. Temperature plays an ambivalent role, as it increases the growth rate but also triggers the parasites responsible for the MME, which is of concern, given the recent rise of seawater temperatures and heatwaves. 2. Multilevel toxicity assessment of polypropylene microplastics and pyrene on mussels : DNA damage, oxidative stress, and physiological effectsTatjana Mijošek Pavin, Margareta Kračun-Kolarević, Stoimir Kolarević, Tatjana Simčič, Rajko Martinović, Oliver Bajt, Gabriela Kalčíková, Andreja Ramšak, 2026, original scientific article Abstract: Despite extensive research on microplastic pollution, combined biological effects of microplastics and associated pollutants on marine invertebrates remain unclear. We present an integrative assessment of polypropylene (PP) and pyrene, individually and in co-exposure, in mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Mussels were exposed to 1 mg L−1 PP (~40 μm) and 50 μg L−1 of pyrene for 7 and 14 days, representing a scenario relevant to highly polluted coastal areas. DNA damage increased significantly in mussels exposed to pyrene or PP alone, but remained at control levels under combined exposure, suggesting an interaction that may reduce genotoxic potential. Lipid peroxidation remained stable across treatments, despite significant changes in antioxidant enzymes. Catalase activity increased in pyrene and pyrene + PP treatments, with tissue-specific trends, indicating enhanced antioxidant protection. Glutathione S-transferase activity was stable in digestive glands but significantly inhibited in gills after seven days under PP exposure. ETS activity increased in pyrene-containing treatments after 14 days, reflecting elevated metabolic demand after prolonged exposure. Respiration rate declined under PP exposure. Heart rate recovery time after the hyposalinity test was the slowest in the pyrene + PP group, indicating compromised physiological resilience. These findings reveal interactive, tissue- and biomarker-specific effects of PP and pyrene. Their combination suggested attenuation of genotoxicity but enhanced physiological stress responses, highlighting the complexity of pollutant interactions and importance of evaluating multiple biomarkers, tissues and pollutants. Presented data provide the first ever biomarker-based evaluation of PP and pyrene co-exposure, offering novel insights into microplastic-pollutant interactions and potential ecological consequences for marine invertebrates. 6. Perspektiva moških in žensk v procesu skrbi za reproduktivno zdravjeAnton Grmšek Svetlin, Nika Jerina, Melisa Smajlović, Mirko Prosen, Rebeka Lekše, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: Raziskovalno vprašanje (RV): Kateri dejavniki po mnenju moških in žensk vplivajo na kakovost njihovega reproduktivnega zdravja? Kakšne razlike obstajajo med moškimi in ženskami v dojemanju lastnega reproduktivnega zdravja? Kako stigme in tabuji vplivajo na reproduktivno zdravje? Podatke smo analizirali z metodo analize vsebine. Rezultati: Z metodo analize so bile oblikovane tri teme: (1) reproduktivno zdravje moških in žensk, (2) socio-kulturni vidiki reproduktivnega zdravja in (3) izzivi reproduktivnega zdravja. Obenem smo s kvalitativno analizo besedila identificirali 13 podtem. Omejitve/nadaljnje raziskovanje: Pridobljeni odgovori intervjuvancev so subjektivne narave in so podvrženi interpretaciji raziskovalcev. 7. Preconception use of GLP-1 and GLP-1/GIP receptor agonists for obesity treatmentAndrijana Koceva, Andrej Janež, Mojca Jensterle Sever, 2025, review article Abstract: Obesity is rising among women of reproductive age and significantly contributes to subfertility. If conception occurs, maternal obesity is associated with increased risks for both maternal and neonatal complications, with potential long-term effects on the offspring's health. Current clinical guidelines emphasize the importance of preconception weight optimization in women with obesity to reduce maternal and fetal risks. Amid the rising use of incretin-based anti-obesity medications, particularly among young women, their potential role in preconception care is receiving growing clinical and research interest. With unplanned pregnancies remaining common, incidental exposure during early pregnancy is becoming more likely. In parallel, there is increasing interest in the potential of these agents to support preconception weight loss and enhance fertility outcomes in women with obesity. This narrative review examines the current human evidence on GLP-1 and dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonists approved for obesity treatment, focusing on their potential role in preconception care and addressing key safety considerations and challenges related to their use during the preconception period, as well as inadvertent exposure in early pregnancy. 8. Assessment of peak inspiratory flow in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease : a multicentre, observational, prospective, real-life studyValeria Perugini, Chin Kook Rhee, Ji-Yong Moon, Tiew Pei Yee, Seung Won Ra, Pietro Pirina, Matevž Harlander, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: Introduction: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) use dry powder inhalers (DPIs) for disease management. DPI effectiveness relies on the patient’s peak inspiratory flow (PIF), which may not always be optimal. We conducted an observational multicentre, prospective, real-life cohort study to determine the prevalence of suboptimal PIF in patients with COPD. Methods: 415 participants (11%, n=47 women, mean age=70±8.7 years, mean forced expiratory volume in 1 s (predicted %)=48.1%) recruited from 17 international centres had baseline PIF recorded with an In-Check Dial device at three resistance levels: (1) low, (2) high and (3) the participant’s maintenance device. We also recorded PIF from participants as they would do at home to verify their proper inhalation technique. Participants underwent spirometry and completed questionnaires (COPD Assessment Test (CAT), Test of Adherence to Inhalers (TAI)-12). Results: Of the 415 participants, 18% of DPI users (n=75) exhibited suboptimal values of PIF (as typical PIF Keywords: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD, peak inspiratory flow, dry powder inhaler, inhaler devices, inhaler therapy, tailor treatment plans Published in DiRROS: 23.12.2025; Views: 4; Downloads: 4
