Abstract:Short food supply chains depend on stable domestic agricultural production. In Slovenia, maize plays a key role in this context, as the country generally maintains a relatively high level of maize self-sufficiency. However, maize production is vulnerable to weather-related variability, which has become increasingly evident in recent years. Climate change poses an additional and intensifying pressure on maize production, with empirical evidence identifying maize as one of the most vulnerable crops, particularly due to the increasing frequency and severity of droughts and heat waves. These climate-related fluctuations in maize yields may affect feed availability, farm income, and the stability of livestock production, thereby influencing the resilience of short food supply chains. A better understanding of climate impacts on maize production is therefore essential for strengthening the resilience of local agri-food systems.
