| Abstract: | Age and growth of striped red mullet, Mullus surmuletus Linnaeus, 1758 were estimated using sagittal otoliths from specimens collected off the northern coast of Tunisia between January 2005 and December 2007. In the studied sample, the males outnumbered the females (♀/♂ = 0.56). The age composition ranged from one to five years, and most specimens belonged to the one-year age group. The length-weight relationship displayed positive allometry for both sexes. The fit of the von Bertalanffy growth curve was significantly different between sexes (p < 0.05): TL∞ = 267.8 mm, k = 0.242 year–1, t0 = -1.343 years for males and TL∞ = 284.1 mm, k = 0.293 year–1, t0 = -0.872 years for females. |
