Abstract:Članek predstavi ključne značilnosti kraške pokrajine Burren. Gre za enega najboljših primerov rahlo dvignjenega, ledeniško preoblikovanega apneniškega območja, ki zaradi obrušenega površja in postglacialno nastalih kraških pojavov spominja na visokogorski ledeniški kras. Kraške mize dokazujejo postglacialno korozijsko zniževanje površja, spremljajo pa jih škavnice in večji, starejši kraški pojavi. Burren izstopa po veliki geo- in biodiverziteti, turistični privlačnosti in pomembni vlogi v najzgodnejšem naseljevanju Irske.

Title:The Burren: on limestone, everything is different : Irish glaciokarst, attractive to humans since prehistory, is both a work of art and a classroom of nature
Abstract:Irish glaciokarst, attractive to humans since prehistory, is both a work of art and a classroom of nature. The article presents the key characteristics of the karst landscape of the Burren. It is regarded as one of the finest examples of a slightly elevated, glacially transformed limestone region which, owing to its glacially abrased surface and post-glacially developed karst features, resembles high-mountain glaciokarst. Limestone pavements provide evidence of post-glacial corrosional lowering of the surface and are accompanied by kamenitzas as well as larger, older karst features. The Burren is particularly notable for its high geo- and biodiversity, its attractiveness for tourism, and its important role in the earliest settlement of Ireland.
