Ta pregledni članek sledi zgodovini medicinske uporabe zlata od starega Egipta, grško-rimskega sveta, preko srednjeveške in renesančne alkimije do obdobja razsvetljenstva.

Title:A historical overview of the use of gold in pharmacy in Europe and the Mediterranean region
Abstract:Gold has held a unique role in the past not only as a symbol of wealth and divinity but also as a purported active ingredient. The prevalence of goldbased remedies over the millennia reflects a combination of empirical observation, philosophical and religious considerations, the immutability, incorruptibility and perfection that gold symbolized. Before 1800 CE, physicians and alchemists in various cultures regarded gold as panacea in forms from elixirs of longevity to medicines for different diseases. This review paper follows the medicinal applications of gold from ancient Egypt, the Greco-Roman world through the alchemy of Middle Ages and Renaissance to the Age of Enlightenment.
Keywords:alchemy, history of pharmacy, Paracelsus, potable gold
