| Abstract: | In the early modern period, Rovinj had healthier air compared to many other Istrian coastal communes, leading to a significantly higher population than places like Pula or Poreč. Its strategic location and a stable connection to Venice also attracted many settlers. This is confirmed by the first known census of Rovinj from 1595/6, which shows that a large proportion of surnames were linked to newcomers. This paper describes the census, examines the enumeration method and the time of data collection, assesses the accuracy and reliability of the data, and analyzes the population’s origins based on surnames and descriptors, the titles and names of household heads, and councilor families. |
