Title:New binomial nomenclature of bark beetles (Scolytinae) and pinhole borers (Platypodinae) in Slovenian
Abstract:The article discusses the history of Slovenian naming of bark beetles, including the new binomial nomenclature published in the monograph Scopolia 108 (2024). Older Slovenian names for bark beetles, mostly trinomial and based on the former classification of bark beetles into three subfamilies, were collected from professional and scientific literature. The data in Scopolia 108 were obtained primarily through field research, a review of entomological collections, and literature sources. Information is provided for 117 species of bark beetles (Scolytinae) and one species of pinhole borer (Platypodinae). A systematic review of the relevant subfamilies enabled the assignment of names to newly recorded species and the revision of inappropriate Slovenian names. The principle of binomial nomenclature was followed, ensuring that each species name includes an unambiguous genus name. Existing Slovenian, scientific, German, and English names were considered, as well as the morphological and ecological characteristics of bark beetles, their host plants, and, less frequently, their geographic distribution. The paper also provides Slovenian names for three new alien bark beetles recorded in Slovenia after the publication of Scopolia 108.
