Abstract:Laboratoriji imajo ključno vlogo pri odkrivanju, karakterizaciji in spremljanju respiratornih patogenov med epidemijami in pandemijami. Pojav visoko prenosljivih respiratornih virusov, kot sta gripa A (H1N1)pdm09 in SARS-CoV-2, je poudaril pomen biovarnosti in zaščite v laboratorijskih okoljih. Osebje, ki dela s kliničnimi vzorci ali namnoženimi respiratornimi virusi, se sooča s tveganjem nenamerne izpostavljenosti laboratorijsko pridobljenim okužbam in sekundarnemu prenosu. V prispevku predstavljamo temeljna načela biovarnosti, ravni zadrževanja patogenov v laboratorijih, osebno varovalno opremo in strategije obvladovanja tveganj, prilagojene respiratornim patogenom. Predstavljamo tudi izzive biovarnosti med pandemijo gripe leta 2009 in pandemijo covida-19, ko so se skrajno povečale potrebe po diagnostičnih zmogljivostih laboratorijev, s poudarkom na praktičnih pristopih za zaščito laboratorijskega osebja, in izkušnje, ki smo jih v dveh pandemijah pridobili.

Title:Protective measures for laboratory personnel during epidemics of respiratory infections : insights from the influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and SARS-CoV-2 pandemics
Abstract:Laboratories play a critical role in the detection, characterization, and monitoring of respiratory pathogens during epidemics and pandemics. The emergence of highly transmissible respiratory viruses, such as influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 and SARS-CoV-2, has highlighted the critical importance of biosafety and biosecurity in laboratory settings. Personnel working with clinical specimens or virus isolates face the risk of inadvertent exposure, laboratory-acquired infections, and secondary transmission. In this paper, we present the principles of biosafety, pathogen containment levels in laboratories, personal protective equipment, and risk management strategies tailored to respiratory pathogens. We present the challenges of biosafety during the 2009 influenza pandemic and the COVID-19 pandemic, when the need for laboratory diagnostic capacity has increased dramatically, with a focus on practical approaches to protecting laboratory personnel and lessons learned from the two pandemics.
