Title:Women at the Workplace in The Context Of Sustainable Development
Abstract:This article focuses on the employment conditions for women, which are set in the context of gender equality, one of the Sustainable Development Goals. In this context, the authors refer to or rely primarily on sustainable development in the social sense, which is a relatively new and not yet fully explored concept in the scientific literature, but still a very important one. Moreover, in analysing the literature, authors take a critical perspective on their chosen topic. The article presents the current legislation in Slovenia and the European legal documents that guarantee gender equality in the workplace. Additionally, the current employment conditions for women are described. The focus here is also on current examples of sustainable workplace practices for women that have been introduced in some countries and the effects that sustainable employment conditions bring to women. Furthermore, examples of these practices are the possibility of sick leave for menstrual pain, the possibility of breastfeeding at the workplace, the possibility of working from home, the flexibility to leave the workplace, etc. In this context, the authors ask a research question: “Do current and proposed sustainable practices benefit women and improve their position at the workplace?” The authors conclude that sustainable practices do benefit women, but that it is important to bear in mind that women are a heterogeneous group and that they differ in terms of age, education, ethnicity, religion, and class, which affects the rights they have and thus their degree of (in)equality in society.
