Abstract:V prispevku avtor predstavlja številčni in prostorski razvoj poselitve Hrvatov v Sloveniji od obdobja pred prvo svetovno vojno do danes.

Title:Croats in the Territory of Present-Day Slovenia (1910–2002) – Numerical and Spatial Development of the Traditional Settlement Area as a Framework for Minority Protection, with an Emphasis on the 1910 Census and Settlement in the Border Area
Abstract:This article examines the numerical and spatial development of Croatian settlement in the territory of present-day Slovenia from the period prior to the First World War to the early twenty-first century. Particular attention is devoted to the entire border area along the Slovenian–Croatian border, with a detailed reconstruction of data from the population censuses of 1910, 1921, and 1931, conducted at a time when ethnic affiliation had not yet been systematically included as a census category. For the first time, such a reconstruction is carried out for the areas of Carniola and Styria on the basis of the 1910 Austrian census, for which only indirect indicators of ethnic affiliation are available. The article presents the methodology used to reconstruct ethnic data and applies it to the Yugoslav censuses of 1921 and 1931, covering both the territory within the current borders of Slovenia and the border area along the Slovenian–Croatian frontier. In addition, a spatial reconstruction of the data at the level of administrative units in the border area with Croatia is undertaken. For the first time, an estimate of the number of Croats living in the territory of present-day Slovenia is provided for all censuses in the period 1910–2002. On the basis of the analysis of the reconstructed census data, areas of historical and traditional Croat presence are identified, serving as a basis for the application of territorial minority protection. Although the concept of a nationally mixed area could be applied to the Croats in Slovenia, following the model used for the Hungarian and Italian minorities, the article argues that a more general solution – namely, the designation of a regionally protected cultural landscape of special cultural value and distinctive historical and ethno-demographic development – would be more appropriate.
