Abstract:Uvod: Številne raziskave kažejo, da mladi prosti čas preživijo preveč pasivno pred televizijskim ekranom in predvsem pred računalnikom. Podatki so bili zbrani z enkratnim zbiranjem. Podatki so bili obdelani z opisno in bivariatno statistiko.

Title:Effects of internet use on youth health and challenges for health education in primary health care
Abstract:Introduction: Numerous studies show that young people tend to spend a great amount of time on passive leisure activities such as watching television, or using the computer. The excessive, too frequent and uncontrolled use of computers may be harmful, particularly for adolescents. The research aimed to determine the impact of the internet use on the health of young people. Methods: A quantitative descriptive study was conducted in March 2011. A single collection of data was gathered from conveniently selected sample of 200 students aged 10 to 15 years and 16 to 20 years in the waiting room of the Child and adolescent outpatient clinic Moste-Polje. The data were analyzed with descriptive and bivariate statistics. Results: Results of the study indicate that the respondents using the internet for shorter period of time achieve better learning results (p = 0.039). A statistically significant relation was established between the amount of time spent online and sleep deprivation (p < 0.001), bloodshot eyes (p = 0.018), vision impairment (p < 0.001), back pain (p = 0.019) and lack of movement feeling (p = 0.025). Discussion and conclusion: The excessive internet use may correlate with worse academic performance and the first signs of health problems. With regard to the safe use of computers, parents proved to be inadequate in their role of educators and should therefore be properly educated along with their children. Primary healthcare providers and teachers should join efforts to provide quality health education and enhance young people's health assets. The results obtained could be employed in planning health education during preventive care medical checkups.
