Abstract:Izhodišča: Profesionalna združenja morajo skrbeti za čim boljše pogoje dela in izobraževanja medicinskih sester. Zato morajo vedeti, kakšno je mnenje njihovih članov. To najlažje izvedo s pomočjo anket.

Title:Sample survey design among nurses in Slovenia : 'Violence against nurses in the workplace'
Abstract:Introduction: In order to ensure optimal nursesʼ training and working conditions, professional associations must obtain the relevant information on the issues from their members. Survey research is recommended to collect quantitative information on the perceptions and opinions of a sample of peoplewhich adequately represent the population of interest. The aim of this article is to present a sample survey design based on the data retrieved from the National register of qualified nurses and midwives and assess the sample quality. Methods: The survey Violence against nurses in the workplace was conducted from November 2010 to February 2011 and the quality of the realised sample was assessed with the chi-square test of independence. Results: Based on the literature review, the assessed sample size was 3,756 units, which would ensure a realised sample size of 939 units, provided that the response rate equalled 25 %. Proportionate stratified sampling method was used. The actual response rate was 18.4 %, which amounted to a realised sample size of 692 units. Notably low response rates were achieved from male nurses and nurses with secondary school education. Discussion and conclusions: The realised sample adequately represents the structures of the nursing populationin Slovenia as regards aspects of age and region, and partially also education level. The difference between the sample structure and the structure of the population was statistically insignificant. Due to a low response rate from male nurses, the gender aspect of the structure of the sample was deficient. In further survey research, a sample structure using disproportionate stratified sampling by gender should be employed.
