Title:Job satification in nursing : indicators of nurses' job satisfaction
Abstract:Introduction: In times of the prevailing economic recession and social changes, nurses' job satisfaction presents a challenge for healthcare organizations to prevent the negative implications of job dissatisfaction. In order to maintain and/or enhance job satisfaction, it is necessary to investigate the determinants and job satisfaction indicators and take appropriate measures accordingly. The purpose of this paper is to collect information on some significant determinants of nurses' job satisfaction and to present the identified indicators. The accumulated evidence will serve as the basis for making comparison between Slovene and foreign research findings on the issue of job satisfaction. Methods: The paper presents the analysis and synthesis of 22 out of 170 selected articles published between 1993 and 2009. A comprehensive literature review was performed using the databases Wiley InterScience, ScienceDirect and PubMed. The database keywords were nurses and job satisfaction . Discussion and concIusion: The level of nurses' job satisfaction mirrors the changes in their work environment, triggered by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. High job satisfaction levels of nurses contribute to effective teamwork and quality interpersonal collaboration, increased patient satisfaction, lower incidence of work-related stres s and emotional exhaustion. Job dissatisfaction, on the other hand, leads to higher staff turnover and absenteeism having direct relationship to the quality of care. Identification of the key job satisfaction and disatisfaction indicatorsallows the planning and implementation of adequate measures to prevent or alleviate the effects of job dissatisfaction. The latter is assessed with job satisfaction indicators - an index that points out the significance of each specific indicator. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
