Prosecutorial Practice on Hate Speech in Slovenia : Context, Trends, and IssuesNeža Kogovšek Šalamon, Sergeja Hrvatič, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: This article aims to determine how public prosecution deals with criminal reports concerning Article 297 of the Slovenian Penal Code on hate speech and explores the influence of the 2019 Slovenian Supreme Court judgment on this practice. The analysis is based on 98 closed case files of the prosecution from 2019 to 2023. The main findings indicate that the number of indictments and convictions remains low; criminal prosecution of cases is inconsistent; there are regional differences in prosecutorial practice; the impact of the 2019 decision is low; and the quality of documents produced by the prosecutor’s offices is deficient. The first part of the paper focuses on the geostrategic position of trade relations through the Balkan Peninsula, extended and established by its geographical position as the dominant cultural meeting point of all the ethnic groups which made use of the flow of goods and capital in conditions of both wartime and peacetime. The second part of the paper gives an analytical-synthetic insight into the poetic orientation of Džore Držić and Lodovik Paskvalić, who were schooled under the influence of Mediterranean culture and were heralds of intercultural and intertextual dialogue in the south-eastern part of Europe. European Code Against Cancer, 5th edition : cancer-causing infections and related interventionsCatharina Johanna Alberts, Paul Bloem, Silvia de Sanjosé, Sophie Graba, Marcis Leja, Peter Malfertheiner, Mojca Matičič, 2026, review article Abstract: The main infections that cause cancer in the European Union (EU) are Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Altogether, in 2022, these infections accounted for ~ 5% of all cancers in the EU, mainly of the stomach, cervix uteri and liver. The largest burden of infection-caused cancers was found in the south of the EU and near the eastern border. Substantial progress in the efficacy of interventions against these infections has been made since the release of the 4th edition of the European Code Against Cancer in 2015. Cancers due to infections can increasingly be prevented by prophylactic vaccines (HPV and HBV) and/or prompt diagnosis and treatment that can either cure (HCV and H. pylori) or slow down the infection (HBV and HIV), thus substantially reducing disease risk. Tools to tackle carcinogenic infections are also increasingly accessible and affordable in the EU, but their implementation is slow. Public awareness, political will and cost-effective protocols are necessary to establish large programmes of vaccination or testing and treatment. Progress monitoring, as well as avoiding disinformation and stigma, is crucial to ensure that advances in medical progress are fully leveraged. The recently published 5th edition of the European Code Against Cancer therefore recommends: (1) vaccinate girls and boys against HBV and HPV at the age recommended in your country; (2) take part in testing and treatment for HBV and HCV, HIV and H. pylori, as recommended in your country. Hancock, Anže Županič, Maria Suarez-Diez, 2024, original scientific article Abstract: Systems biology aims to understand living organisms through mathematically modeling their behaviors at different organizational levels, ranging from molecules to populations. Modeling involves several steps, from determining the model purpose to developing the mathematical model, implementing it computationally, simulating the model’s behavior, evaluating, and refining the model. Importantly, model simulation results must be reproducible, ensuring that other researchers can obtain the same results after writing the code de novo and/or using different software tools. Guidelines to increase model reproducibility have been published. However, reproducibility remains a major challenge in this field. In this paper, we tackle this challenge for physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models, which represent the pharmacokinetics of chemicals following exposure in humans or animals. We summarize recommendations for PBPK model reporting that should apply during model development and implementation, in order to ensure model reproducibility and comprehensibility. We make a proposal aiming to harmonize abbreviations used in PBPK models. To illustrate these recommendations, we present an original and reproducible PBPK model code in MATLAB, alongside an example of MATLAB code converted to Systems Biology Markup Language format using MOCCASIN. As directions for future improvement, more tools to convert computational PBPK models from different software platforms into standard formats would increase the interoperability of these models. The application of other systems biology standards to PBPK models is encouraged. This work is the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration involving the ELIXIR systems biology community. More interdisciplinary collaborations like this would facilitate further harmonization and application of good modeling practices in different systems biology fields. Bindewald, Antonio Brunori, Susan Canavan, Thomas Campagnaro, Laura Celesti-Grapow, Michele de Sá Dechoum, Marjana Westergren, 2020, original scientific article Abstract: Sustainably managed non-native trees deliver economic and societal benefits with limited risk of spread to adjoining areas. However, some plantations have launched invasions that cause substantial damage to biodiversity and ecosystem services, while others pose substantial threats of causing such impacts. The challenge is to maximise the benefits of non-native trees, while minimising negative impacts and preserving future benefits and options. A workshop was held in 2019 to develop global guidelines for the sustainable use of non-native trees, using the Council of Europe % Bern Convention Code of Conduct on Invasive Alien Trees as a starting point. The global guidelines consist of eight recommendations: 1) Use native trees, or non-invasive non-native trees, in preference to invasive non-native trees; 2) Be aware of and comply with international, national, and regional regulations concerning non-native trees; 3) Be aware of the risk of invasion and consider global change trends; 4) Design and adopt tailored practices for plantation site selection and silvicultural management; 5) Promote and implement early detection and rapid response programmes; 6) Design and adopt tailored practices for invasive non-native tree control, habitat restoration, and for dealing with highly modified ecosystems; 7) Engage with stakeholders on the risks posed by invasive non-native trees, the impacts caused, and the options for management; and 8) Develop and support global networks, collaborative research, and information sharing on native and non-native trees. The global guidelines are a first step towards building global consensus on the precautions that should be taken when introducing and planting non-native trees. They are voluntary and are intended to complement statutory requirements under international and national legislation. The application of the global guidelines and the achievement of their goals will help to conserve forest biodiversity, ensure sustainable forestry, and contribute to the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations linked with forest biodiversity.
