Trader Kanjoš Macedonović as a Montenegrin National MythMarijan Premović, 2021, original scientific article Abstract: This paper presents the story of Kanjoš Macedonović (1870), written by Montenegrin author Stjepan Mitrov Ljubiša (1822–1878). The tale of Kanjoš, a well-known literary text about the protagonist’s visit to Venice in the 15th century, lends itself to numerous historical, humanistic, and interdisciplinary interpretations. In the paper, the author reconstructs the historic significance of Kanjoš’s battle with the giant Furlan, a symbolic representation of the relationship with Venetian authorities and the granting of trade privileges as a reward to the medieval Montenegrin Paštrovići clan. Kanjoš is a national hero characterised by high moral standards and a desire to fight honestly for the rights of his people. The paper analyses the importance of this narration in terms of national literary myth and as a symbol of the Montenegrins’ struggle for independence in the 19th century. One of the essential components of this struggle was resistance. Along with the story, the paper elucidates the influence of the writer Stjepan Mitrov Ljubiša on Montenegrin nation building in the second half of the 19th century in which mediaeval history played a major role.

2. The Contribution of First Teachers of French at Petrovic’s Court to the Transformation of Society and the Affirmation of Montenegro in EuropeIvona Jovanović, Jasna Potočnik Topler, 2022, original scientific article Abstract: The paper explores the role and contribution of the first foreign teachers of French in Montenegro, to their students/rulers – last three sovereigns of the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty, to Montenegrin society as a whole and to the affirmation of Montenegro in Europe. The paper chronologically relates to the period of rule of Petar II Petrović- Njegoš, Danilo I and Nikola I, to whom the aforementioned Romance language instructors did not transfer merely a knowledge of language, but also much other substance formed from different views and perspectives on the world, thus contributing to the emancipation of Montenegrin society. Through their efforts to modernise Montenegro and strengthen its sovereignty, as well as their publications and political engagement during events critical to Montenegrin history, they contributed to its reputation and popularisation throughout Europe. The research is based on facts found by studying archive and library materials, and on analysis of periodical publications, travel writings, and documents of a memoir/autobiographical character, which significantly contributes to the originality of the article, where the conclusions of the new analysis are presented and represent a significant contribution to the findings published so far.

3. Theodor Mommsen in Montenegro (1862)Jelena Knežević, Julian Köck, 2022, original scientific article Abstract: This article addresses the issue of the 19th century image of Montenegro from the perspective of an educated European citizen, famous German ancient historian and Nobel Laureate Theodor Mommsen who visited Montenegro in May 1862 during the Montenegrin–Ottoman War. After spending a day in the capital Cetinje, he described his experience in a (hereby for the first time published) letter to his wife Marie Reimer in which he is trying to stay objective as a scholar, while nevertheless showing the supposedly superior point of view of a civilized European. Since the short text contains distinctive elements of 19th century travel writing, the objective of the interpretation is to construct its implied image of Montenegro.

4. Cold War Diplomacy and US-Socialist Yugoslavia Fruitful Relations : An Examination of the Establishment of US-Montenegro Cooperation in 1980Dragutin Papović, 2023, original scientific article Abstract: During the 1970s, Yugoslavia formed a geostrategic partnership with the United States and engaged in multiple cooperative efforts. As one of the republics in Yugoslavia, Montenegro leveraged this partnership to establish numerous relations with the United States, with the primary goal of improving economic cooperation. Conversely, the United States paid greater attention to Montenegro during this period due to the Yugoslav constitution of 1974, which granted more power to the republics in creating international policy. The American government aimed to strengthen its influence in Montenegro and opened an Information Centre in the region in 1980. The close cooperation and mutual interests between the two nations resulted in the first official visit of the Montenegrin delegation to the United States in 1980. This paper relies mainly on unpublished sources from the State Archive of Montenegro.

5. Rethinking Debt-Trap Diplomacy : A Case Study of Montenegro’s Debt to ChinaMarko Savić, Todor Lakić, 2024, original scientific article Abstract: This paper analyses the claim that Montenegro is a country towards which China is practising debt diplomacy. The study aims to assess whether Montenegro’s borrowing from Chinese banks can be taken as an example of deliberate Chinese lending intended to subjugate Montenegro both economically and politically. The case study method is used to draw conclusions regarding the validity of accusations about the harmfulness of the debt to Montenegro, or lack thereof. In addition, the paper examines the economic parameters of the relationship between China and Montenegro, as well as the political reactions to the indebtedness within Montenegro. It also considers the reactions of the European Union and the USA, within the context of China’s geopolitical role in Europe. Based on the findings, it appears unlikely that China is engaged in ongoing debt diplomacy with Montenegro. The criticisms of China’s involvement in the Montenegro case seem politically motivated and unwarranted.

Dante Alighieri nel contesto storico-culturale del Montenegro a cavallo tra XIX e XX secoloMarko Vukčević, 2026, original scientific article Abstract: L’obiettivo di questo articolo è analizzare, in una cornice storico-culturale, le principali tendenze legate all’introduzione delle influenze culturali e letterarie europee nella tradizione montenegrina a cavallo tra il XIX e il XX secolo, epoca fortemente orientata al folklore patriottico-nazionale e caratterizzata da una marcata chiusura nei confronti degli influssi esterni. Particolare attenzione sarà riservata alla cultura italiana, considerata il paradigma più prossimo del modello culturale occidentale e con una tradizione plurisecolare in Montenegro, prendendo come modello la figura di Dante Alighieri, autore canonico della letteratura occidentale e simbolo dell’unità politica, linguistica e culturale d’Italia. L’analisi si soffermerà, infine, su come tali tendenze culturali straniere abbiano potuto contribuire a una trasformazione sia dell’ambiente socio-culturale in cui si manifestavano, sia dei canoni culturali e letterari precedentemente consolidati nella cultura d’arrivo.

Implementing the Russian Initiative : Montenegrin Diplomatic Action Among Balkan Nations in 1896Darko Bakić, Ivan Radulović, Filip Vučetić, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: In response to the instability in the Ottoman Empire, which became particularly evident in the mid-1890s, Austria-Hungary adopted a plan in late January 1896 to occupy part of the territory in the Sanjak of Novi Pazar, provided it received consent from the Porte. On the other hand, Russia launched an initia-tive in February of the same year aimed at bringing the Balkan nations closer together, entrusting Montenegro with its implementation, precisely to prevent the Vienna government from exploiting the newly emerged situation in the neighboring empire to fulfill the Dual Monarchy’s territorial ambitions. To this end, Montenegrin Foreign Minister Gavro Vuković visited Belgrade, Sofia, and Constantinople, with the tangible results of his actions culminating in a secret agreement known as the Ugodba.

war environment and in conditions marked by a substantial superiority of one political party, as well as the role and importance of one dominant political entity that has been exercising power for decades. The topic of this paper is the political life of Montenegro from 1989 to 2010. A particular feature of this period is the fact that one political party (Democratic Party of Socialists) managed to hold power so long, in conditions of party plurali-
sm, unstable and war-affected environment, deep ideological, political, social and ethnic divisions in the society, and intense international pressure.

9. The dynamics of atheization in postwar communist MontenegroTodor Lakić, Boris Vukićević, Saša Knežević, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: This article presents the concept and dynamics of secularization policies and the atheization process in Montenegrin society following World War II. The pro-cess of secularization began with the Communist party’s rise to power and had its most significant manifestations until the mid-1950s. In this research, in addition to the specific secularization policies of the communist authorities, an analysis of the relationship of the state, that is, the communist authorities, towards the religious communities in Montenegro is given. Montenegro was the Yugoslav republic in which the process of atheization and secularization took place most intensively in relation to the federal level. The research presented in the article also includes an analysis of the results of the secularization of the three largest religious commu-nities in Montenegro.

10. First records of five opisthobranch mollusc species (Gastropoda: Heterobranchia) from South Adriatic Waters, MontenegroMilica Jovanović, Vesna Mačić, Domen Trkov, Martina Orlando-Bonaca, Lovrenc Lipej, 2020, other scientific articles Abstract: Five new records of opisthobranch molluscs were reported for the first time in Montenegrin waters. Berghia verrucicornis and Doris ocelligera were collected as a bycatch with macroalgal samples, which were further analysed in the laboratory. Other three species: Aglaja tricolorata, Pleurobranchus testudinarius and Eubranchus tricolor, were identified and photographed during underwater visual census performed from 2011 to 2019. The total number of opisthobranchs recorded so far in the Montenegrin part of the Adriatic Sea increased to 76 species.
