A red Roman column from Emona (Ljubljana, Slovenia)
Andreja Maver, Bernarda Županek, Maja Gutman, Dragomir Skaberne, Sabina Dolenec, 2020, original scientific article

Abstract: The excavation conducted in 1999 in Ljubljana (Slovenia), in Insula XXVII of the Roman colonia Iulia Emona, un-earthed the remains of a column shaft with an organic core set onto a stone block. The contribution presents this find, its context and likely parallels, the mineralogical-petrographic composition of the stucco, type of the pigments used, as well as the rock of the plinth and its provenance. Of the shaft, only the stucco survives, applied in four mortar layers and painted in red ochre, while its interior surface shows the impressions of reeds. The plinth is a rectangular block made of locally available Lower Jurassic oolitic limestone, presumably from Podpeč. The column may have formed part of a porticus or peristyle, possibly associated with a pool or a bath complex in this part of Late Roman Emona.

Measurements of bridge dynamic amplification factor using bridge weigh-in-motion data
Jan Kalin, Aleš Žnidarič, Andrej Anžlin, Maja Kreslin, 2022, original scientific article

Abstract: The dynamic component of bridge traffic loading is commonly taken into account with a Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF)—the ratio between the dynamic and static load effects on a bridge. In the design codes, this factor is generally more conservative than in reality. Recently a new method of cal- culation of this factor had been developed. Data from 15 different bridges have been analysed since then and this paper presents the results of the analyses. The background for Bridge Weigh-in-Motion is given, and the most recent method for DAF calculation is described. The sites from which the data originated are presented, and the selection of data discussed. The results of the analyses are presented and discussed and some examples of DAF calculations are shown. Data from the considered sites have invariably demonstrated a DAF decrease with increasing axle load. This is a significant result, especially for assessment of existing structures, since it is beneficial to use measured structural param- eters to optimise structural analysis.

International Conference Respiratory Philosophy: a Paradigm Shift : Portorož, 18-21 June 2023
2023, other monographs and other completed works

Abstract: Breathing is a rare theme in today’s institutionalized philosophy, and it is only in recent years that the philosophy of breathing as a new paradigm has begun to interest some thinkers. The pioneers of the field are Luce Irigaray (1983), David Kleinberg-Levin (1984), David Abram (1996) and Peter Sloterdijk (1998). It was only in the 2010s that explicit and systematic studies have been published on the philosophy of breathing. /// The respiratory philosophy as presented and articulated at this conference deals with our relationships with the atmospheres of breathing and air. “Breath” might seem like a peculiar project, or at the very least disconnected from the way in which most European philosophy has understood itself and its goals. But the “forgetting of air and breathing” (Irigaray, Abram) in the modern European philosophical discourse is in itself one of the deepest, unacknowledged tensions, shaping its unfortunate outlook on the world. A new respiratory philosophy has the double merit of decolonizing the philosophical curriculum through an inclusion of non-European sources and insights, and of revealing how such “breathing” is a fundamental (even if erased) element of its own history. The potential of such a paradigm shift – especially in collaboration with cross-cultural Atmospheric Studies from this conference on – will bear far-reaching consequences for the areas of ontology, ethics, poetics, politics, art theory and praxis, environmental humanities, spirituality and health/well-being – as fields being in the forefront of this new respiratory paradigm.

Unfree wage labour
Maja Breznik, 2023, original scientific article

Abstract: The article develops the concept of ‘unfree wage labour’ that refers to a situation in which a worker must (temporarily and conditionally) give away possession of his labour power to a third party who then sells it to the buyers of labour power. From the perspective of contract freedom and legal equality, it seems irrelevant whether a worker sells his or her labour power to an employer or to an intermediary. However, there is no doubt that labour intermediation increases the economic dependence and social subordination of workers. First, given that the intermediary negotiates with the employer, the worker has a lower ability to influence the terms of employment. Second, given that he or she is a contract worker, they have a lower ability to engage in collective action in the company. Undoubtedly, this worker has significantly lower control over her or his working and living conditions. The question arises whether his or her contract freedom lessened to the extent that we can speak of unfree wage labour.
