Central Europe tectonic hiatus 2015–2019
Miloš Briestenský, Stanka Šebela, Petar Stefanov, Uroš Novak, 2026, original scientific article

Abstract: Long-term extensometric monitoring across Central Europe reveals a pronounced tectonic hiatus between 2015 and 2019. Using high-resolution data from the EU TecNet network of optical – mechanical TM-71 and TM-72 extensometers installed along major fault zones, we document a widespread attenuation or cessation of fault-related micro-displacements that coincided with a marked decrease in regional seismicity. The hiatus was most prominent in the Western Carpathians, where fault movements were arrested at nearly half of the monitored sites, preferentially affecting major NNE – SSW-striking fault systems that represent the principal structural grain of the region. Despite the overall quiescence, extensional fault opening developed at several sites since 2015, followed by significant vertical subsidence recorded across much of the Western Carpathians in 2018. Similar patterns of tectonic quiescence were observed in the Bohemian Massif, Slovenia, and Bulgaria, indicating that the phenomenon extended over large parts of Central and Southeastern Europe. The temporal evolution of deformation and its correspondence with seismicity suggest that the 2015–2019 hiatus reflects a transient regional-scale reorganisation of the stress field, likely linked to variations in plate-boundary forcing, rather than a response to climatic effects or local processes.

Integrated multi-scale ecohydrogeological monitoring of spatio-temporal dynamics in karst critical zones
Nataša Ravbar, Metka Petrič, Mitja Ferlan, Uroš Novak, Janez Kermavnar, Lado Kutnar, Aleksander Marinšek, Daniel Žlindra, Blaž Kogovšek, Erika Kozamernik, Cyril Mayaud, David Štefanič, Sara Skok, Janez Mulec, Stanka Šebela, Urša Vilhar, 2026, other scientific articles

Abstract: Contemporary environmental concerns highlight the vulnerability of karst environments to changing hydrometeorological patterns and vegetation disturbance, necessitating a unified, interdisciplinary strategy for comprehensive understanding. This paper critically examines the current state of research. To overcome the identified gaps, it presents an integrated multi-scale ecohydrogeological monitoring approach tailored to karst critical zones (KCZ) and its spatio-temporal variability. Forested karst aquifer in Slovenia is used as a case study to demonstrate and assess the strengths and limitations of the proposed monitoring framework. To decipher flow dynamics and propose customized data collection strategies the approach combines surface and underground sites and employs advanced methods adapted to the challenges of karst environments. The results highlight the benefits and advancements of monitoring and sampling approaches to ensure representativeness in heterogeneous environments. The focus is on the use of enhanced precipitation monitoring systems to expand sampling areas nearly fivefold and improve precipitation and throughfall measurements. Additionally, customized lysimeter techniques for karst soils and microscale adaptations for cave exploration have been developed, addressing the challenges of instrument placement in environments with significant variability. Further opportunities lie in improving instrument protection, integrating sensor networks, combining remote sensing and scaling from plot to aquifer level. However, challenges remain in achieving spatio-temporal representativeness and ensuring the operational reliability of snow monitoring, soil solution sampling and drip flow measurements. Threats include environmental pressures and hydrometeorological conditions, equipment tampering and funding stability. Nevertheless, this comprehensive approach improves monitoring of ecohydrogeological processes in the KCZ, promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and environmental resource management.

Breaking free from PFAS : biocompatible, durable and high-performance octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA)-modified starch/chitosan coating with ZnO for textile applications
Anja Verbič, Blaž Stres, Ivan Jerman, Barbara Golja, Ema Žagar, Vuk Martinović, Petja Logar, Gregor Lavrič, Anže Prašnikar, Blaž Likozar, Uroš Novak, Ana Oberlintner, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: The development of textile coatings as alternatives to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is a high priority due to global regulatory efforts aiming to phase out PFAS, driven by alarming environmental contamination and significant human health concerns. To address the urgent need for replacements, this research develops a health-friendly hydrophobic coating for two of the most common textile substrates, cotton and polyester. The developed coating, consisting of chitosan matrix and octenyl succinic anhydride-modified starch in synergy with ZnO, achieved water contact angles up to 132°. A successful transition to industrial application provided a translucent and homogeneous hydrophobic protection, without noticeably affecting the material's physical properties. Maintained or improved mechanical properties, supported by FTIR analysis, indicate a benign coating process that provides fiber reinforcement. Durability is demonstrated through multiple washing cycles without decrease in hydrophobicity, and high abrasion resistance (min. 20,000 cycles), winning against its commercial fluorinated counterpart. The water-repellent properties show stability over a longer period of time (min. 230 days). The biodegradability study confirmed the environmental compatibility as the biopolymer coating decomposed in 8 days. Finally, multivariate statistical analysis determined an optimal coating process to ensure effective integration of the newly developed sustainable coating into textile manufacturing processes.
