11. Precipitacija v vodi netopnih bakrovih soli v lesu kot zaščita pred glivami razkrojevalkami lesaJaka Levanič, Jure Švikart, Eli Keržič, Miha Humar, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: V raziskavi predstavljamo metodo zaščite lesa pred glivnim razkrojem s precipitacijo netopnih bakrovih soli v lumnih lesnih celic z uporabo dvostopenjske impregnacije s topnim bakrovim sulfatom in fiksativom, natrijevim karbonatom. 13. Rare Basidiomycete resupinatus rouxii reported for the first time in Türki̇yeIsmail Acar, Halide Karabiyik, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: In this study, Resupinatus rouxii Consiglio & Setti was collected from Çanakkale province, Türkiye, and identified using both morphological and molecular data. Macroscopically, the species is characterised by its small size, kidney-shaped pileus, light grey colour, and slightly hairy surface. Microscopic examination confirmed diagnostic features of the genus Resupinatus, and detailed evaluations were made of the basidia, basidiospores, and cystidia. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA was sequenced and used in phylogenetic analyses. The resulting ITS sequence showed more than 99% similarity to the reference sequence of R. rouxii, supporting the morphological identification. This study represents the second scientific report of R. rouxii worldwide and provides the fourth known record of this species, extending its known distribution to Türkiye (Çanakkale province) and contributing valuable data to its biogeography. 14. Exercise-induced hypertension after aortic coarctation repair : our experience and a systematic reviewPolona Kačar, Nejc Pavšič, Katja Prokšelj, 2024, original scientific article Abstract: Background: The exact prevalence and clinical significance of excessive increase in blood pressure in response to exercise in patients with repaired coarctation of aorta (CoA) remains unknown.Aim: This study aimed to investigate the impact of different definitions of exercise-induced hypertension (EIH) on the prevalence rates in our adult patients with repaired CoA. A systematic review of the available literature was also performed. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed exercise test data from adult patients with repaired CoA followed at the national referral center for adult congenital heart disease between 1998 and 2021. The three most reported definitions of EIH in patients with repaired CoA were used for the analysis of EIH prevalence. We also performed a systematic search of the PubMed electronic bibliographic database. Full-text versions of all potentially relevant articles on EIH in CoA were reviewed for relevance. Results: Our registry included 161 adult CoA patients. Complete exercise test results were available in 74 patients (59% male, median age 39 years [range 20–68 years]). The prevalence of EIH in our cohort varied from 24 to 41%, depending on the definition used. We identified eleven eligible articles from 184 publications. The reported prevalence rate of EIH in the studies ranged from 13% to 82%.Conclusion: EIH is common in patients with repaired CoA; however, the rates of EIH vary greatly depending on the definition used. A standardized and uniform EIH definition is needed to accurately assess the prevalence and clinical relevance of EIH in this population. 15. ACE inhibitor and angiotensin receptor blocker use during pregnancy : data from the ESC registry of pregnancy and cardiac disease (ROPAC)Johanna A. Van der Zande, Karishma P. Ramlakhan, Katja Prokšelj, Edison Muñoz-Ortiz, Amalia Baroutidou, Magdalena Lipczynska, 2024, original scientific article Abstract: Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-Is) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) are not recommended during the second and third trimester because of the significant risk of congenital anomalies associated with their use. However, data are scarce, especially regarding their use in the first trimester and about the impact of stopping just before pregnancy. Our study illustrates the profile of the women who used ACE-Is or ARBs during pregnancy and evaluates the impact on perinatal outcomes. The Registry of Pregnancy and Cardiac Disease is a prospective, global registry of pregnancies in women with structural heart disease. Outcomes were compared between women who used ACE-Is or ARBs and those who did not. Multivariable regression analysis was performed to assess the effect of ACE-I or ARB use on the occurrence of congenital anomalies. ACE-Is (n = 35) and/or ARBs (n = 8) were used in 42 (0.7%) of the 5,739 Registry of Pregnancy and Cardiac Disease pregnancies. Women who used ACE-Is or ARBs more often came from a low-or-middle-income country (57% vs 40%, p = 0.021), had chronic hypertension (31% vs 6%, p <0.001), or a left ventricular ejection fraction <40% (33% vs 4%, p <0.001). In the multivariable analysis, ACE-I use during the first trimester was associated with an increased risk of congenital anomaly (odds ratio 3.2, 95% confidence interval 1.0 to 9.6). Therefore, ACE-Is should be avoided during pregnancy, also in the first trimester, because of a higher risk of congenital anomalies. However, there is no need to stop long before pregnancy. Preconception counseling is crucial to discuss the potential risks of these medications, to evaluate the clinical condition and, if possible, to change or stop the medication. 16. Quality of life in adults with congenital heart disease : insights from a tertiary centrePolona Kačar, Melita Flander, Katja Prokšelj, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: Objective: As the survival of individuals born with congenital heart disease (CHD) improves into adulthood, the focus has shifted from traditional clinical outcomes to patient-reported outcome measures that better reflect the impact of the disease on daily life. Our aim was to assess the quality of life (QoL) of adult patients with congenital heart disease (ACHD) followed in a tertiary centre and to evaluate the parameters that influence QoL in this population. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study included patients followed up at the national referral ACHD centre between April and September 2022. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected from medical records and self-report questionnaires. Quality of life (QoL) was assessed using the validated Short Form–36 (SF-36) and Euro Quality of Life–5 Dimension (EQ-5D) questionnaires, including the EQ Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Results: A total of 123 ACHD patients were included (median age 34 (29–41) years; 43.9% male). Most participants had moderate CHD (61%), and 14.6% were cyanotic. Overall, SF-36 Physical Component Summary scores were higher than Mental Component Summary scores. Almost half of the patients (48.8%) reported no problems in all five domains of the EQ-5D, with most problems reported in anxiety/depression domain. Patients with severe CHD, cyanosis, or HF reported lower QoL scores across multiple SF-36 domains, particularly general health, role–physical, and physical functioning domains. Conclusions: QoL among ACHD patients in our cohort was generally high in most domains as assessed by the SF-36 and EQ-5D. Patients with HF reported lower QoL scores, emphasizing the importance of close clinical follow-up and the need for tailored QoL assessment tools for this complex population. 17. Detection of specific antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 spike protein via ultra-sensitive bio-functionalized carbonnitride-reduced graphene oxide electrochemical immunosensing platform in real samplesMohd. Abubakar Sadique, Shalu Yadav, Pushpesh Ranjan, Raghuraj S. Chouhan, Ivan Jerman, Ashok Kumar, Saurabh Saigal, Sagar Khadanga, Raju Khan, Avanish K. Srivastava, 2023, original scientific article Abstract: In this work, we fabricate a facile de novo synthesis route to prepare bio-functionalized carbon nitride-reduced graphene oxide with chitosan (Chi) nanocomposite (C3N4/RGO/Chi). The nitrogen-rich C3N4 has been synthesized through facile and low-cost thermal oxidation and offers a metal-free and highly active surface for synergistic modification with RGO and Chi. Moreover, the synergistically incorporated C3N4/RGO and biopolymer improve the electrocatalytic activity, provide surface functionalities, and enhance electroconductivity for immunosensing applications. Consequently, the bio-functionalized C3N4/RGO nanocomposite provides a suitable substrate for the immobilization of SARS-CoV-2 RBD spike protein. The immunosensor detects SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in a wide detection range from 10 zg mL−1 (10 × 10−21 g mL−1) to 100 ng mL−1 with an ultra-low detection limit (LOD) of 3.31 zg mL−1. The validation of the immunosensor was also carried out on spiked serum samples, which show a linear detection range of 100 ag mL−1 to 100 ng mL−1 and a LOD of 1.73 ag mL−1. Nevertheless, the clinical diagnostic application of the immunosensor is validated through the examination of real serum samples from COVID-19 patients. The results suggest that the immunosensor can be efficiently used as a screening platform to distinguish between positive and negative samples with high accuracy. The findings of the work have the potential to translate the immunosensing strategy into next-generation point-of-care testing (POCT) of various infectious diseases. 19. Accuracy of transthoracic echocardiography in diagnosis of cardiac myxoma : single center experiencePolona Kačar, Nejc Pavšič, Mojca Bervar, Zvezdana Dolenc-Stražar, Katja Prokšelj, 2025, original scientific article Abstract: Background: The differential diagnosis of cardiac myxomas (CM), the most common benign primary cardiac tumors, is broad and a thorough diagnostic workup is required to establish accurate diagnosis prior to surgical resection. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is usually the first imaging modality used for diagnosis of suspected CM. In a single tertiary centre study, we sought to determine the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of TTE in the diagnosis of CM and to determine echocardiographic characteristics indicative of CM. Patients and methods: We retrospectively analyzed clinical, echocardiographic, and pathohistological findings of 73 patients consecutively admitted for suspected CM. Results: After diagnostic workup, 53 (73%) patients were treated surgically at our institution. Based on preoperative TTE, patients were divided into a CM group (n=45, 85%) and non-myxoma (NM) group. Of the 53 pathohistological specimens obtained during surgery, 39 (73%) were CM. The sensitivity and specificity of preoperative echocardiography were 97% and 50%, respectively. The overall accuracy was 85%. All NM tumors were found in an atypical location and 72% of CM were found in a typical position in the left atrium (p < 0.001). Tumors in NM group were significantly smaller than CM (24.3 ± 13.2 mm vs. 37.9 ± 18.3 mm, p = 0.017). Conclusions: Our study confirms very good accuracy of TTE in the diagnosis of CM. The most important echocardiographic characteristics to differentiate between CM and tumors of different etiology are tumor location and size. Smaller tumors presenting at an atypical location are less likely to be diagnosed as CM, and these require additional imaging modalities for accurate diagnosis. 20. Emerging trends and recent progress of MXene as a promising 2D material for point of care (POC) diagnosticsRaghuraj S. Chouhan, Maitri Shah, Drishya Prakashan, P.R. Ramya, Pratik Kolhe, Sonu Gandhi, 2023, review article Abstract: Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with chemical and structural diversity have piqued the interest of the scientific community due to their superior photonic, mechanical, electrical, magnetic, and catalytic capabilities that distinguish them from their bulk counterparts. Among these 2D materials, two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, carbonitrides, and nitrides with a general chemical formula of Mn+1XnTx (where n = 1–3), together known as MXenes, have gained tremendous popularity and demonstrated competitive performance in biosensing applications. In this review, we focus on the cutting-edge advances in MXene-related biomaterials, with a systematic summary on their design, synthesis, surface engineering approaches, unique properties, and biological properties. We particularly emphasize the property–activity–effect relationship of MXenes at the nano– bio interface. We also discuss the recent trends in the application of MXenes in accelerating the performance of conventional point of care (POC) devices towards more practical approaches as the next generation of POC tools. Finally, we explore in depth the existing problems, challenges, and potential for future improvement of MXene-based materials for POC testing, with the goal of facilitating their early realization of biological applications.
