Povzetek:This article regards Riegl’s essay on Salzburg as a vital methodological shift in art history because it treats the city as an integrated historical and spatial form. In Riegl’s work, Salzburg emerges as a space in which artistic monuments and processes can be discerned through the interplay of style, perception, the historical moment, and the urban whole. Therefore, his essay has a broader significance: it raises the question of how urban space itself becomes the object of art-historical inquiry. For Riegl, the city is a relational space where various artistic wills converge, and Salzburg is artistically most productive when it adopts Italian influences directly, without substantially transforming them in view of its northern environment. Riegl’s approach also allows for a change of perspective on the relationship between the centre and province. The province establishes itself as an active space in which artistic impulses can be received, focused, or transformed in accordance with its spatial and historical logic. Riegl’s understanding of space notably influenced subsequent representatives of the Viennese School and the development of Austrian art topography. Dvořák’s students, especially France Stele, transferred this heritage to the new political and cultural context after the Monarchy’s dissolution. In his interpretation of Ljubljana, Stele builds on Riegl’s model of the city as a relational historical form, but transforms it into a cultural programme. During this process, Ljubljana is understood as a city that is gradually developing its own artistic centre from its intermediary position. Therefore, the comparison between Salzburg and Ljubljana shows how the Viennese art-historical tradition was transformed from an analytical model into a cultural-political vision of the city following the Monarchy’s collapse.
