Naslov:Quality of life in stoma patients
Povzetek:Introduction: Due to the lack of research studies on the ostomy patients' needs and altered life style, it is impossible for nurses to plan the necessary activities to contribute to theirbetter quality of life. Aim: The aim of the study is to assess the quality of life of ostomates along with their coping skills and accordingly plan the necessary nursing activities within the health education of patients. Some results of the study will be compared to those included in a similar Spanish research conducted in 2006. Methods: The Stoma QOL questionnaire was used to collect the data in the research study cunducced in 2007 among Slovene patients with stoma. The research was based on a random sample of 269 respondents. The same inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied as in the Spanish research. The basic statistics and factor analysis were performed by using the SPSS statistics programme. Results: The mean values of the issued covered, like sleeping, intimate relations, family and social interactions, are not significantly different. All the above mentioned issues affect the quality of life, with the changed body image and weakened physical strength being most pronounced. Discussion and conclusions: The mean value of the quality of life as assessed by Slovene stoma patients through the Stoma QOL questionnaire was 51.5. It is lower than in patients of other European countries (France 53.8; Germany 60.0; Netherlands 62.6). The ostomates are mainly concerned about loosing of the pouch, bad smell and the access to the toilet. In comparison to the Spanish study the results do not differ in the three best and worst scored aspects of the quality of life. The results of the study confirm that the Stoma-QOL questionnaire is a valid and reliable tool to measure the quality of life among people with ostomy.
