Extremal edge general position sets in some graphs
Jing Tian, Sandi Klavžar, Elif Tan, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: A set of edges $X\subseteq E(G)$ of a graph $G$ is an edge general position set if no three edges from $X$ lie on a common shortest path. The edge general position number ${\rm gp}_{\rm e}(G)$ of $G$ is the cardinality of a largest edge general position set in $G$. Graphs $G$ with ${\rm gp}_{\rm e}(G) = |E(G)| - 1$ and with ${\rm gp}_{\rm e}(G) = 3$ are respectively characterized. Sharp upper and lower bounds on ${\rm gp}_{\rm e}(G)$ are proved for block graphs $G$ and exact values are determined for several specific block graphs.

On metric dimensions of hypercubes
Aleksander Kelenc, Aoden Teo Masa Toshi, Riste Škrekovski, Ismael G. Yero, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In this note we show two unexpected results concerning the metric, the edge metric and the mixed metric dimensions of hypercube graphs. First, we show that the metric and the edge metric dimensions of $Q_d$ differ by at most one for every integer $d$. In particular, if $d$ is odd, then the metric and the edge metric dimensions of $Q_d$ are equal. Second, we prove that the metric and the mixed metric dimensions of the hypercube $Q_d$ are equal for every $d \ge 3$. We conclude the paper by conjecturing that all these three types of metric dimensions of $Q_d$ are equal when d is large enough.

A method for computing the edge-Hosoya polynomial with application to phenylenes
Martin Knor, Niko Tratnik, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The edge-Hosoya polynomial of a graph is the edge version of the famous Hosoya polynomial. Therefore, the edge-Hosoya polynomial counts the number of (unordered) pairs of edges at distance $k \ge 0$ in a given graph. It is well known that this polynomial is closely related to the edge-Wiener index and the edge-hyper-Wiener index. As the main result of this paper, we greatly generalize an earlier result by providing a method for calculating the edge-Hosoya polynomial of a graph $G$ which is obtained by identifying two edges of connected bipartite graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$. To show how the main theorem can be used, we apply it to phenylene chains. In particular, we present the recurrence relations and a linear time algorithm for calculating the edge-Hosoya polynomial of any phenylene chain. As a consequence, closed formula for the edge-Hosoya polynomial of linear phenylene chains is derived.

Edge general position sets in Fibonacci and Lucas cubes
Sandi Klavžar, Elif Tan, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: A set of edges $X\subseteq E(G)$ of a graph $G$ is an edge general position set if no three edges from $X$ lie on a common shortest path in $G$. The cardinality of a largest edge general position set of $G$ is the edge general position number of $G$. In this paper edge general position sets are investigated in partial cubes. In particular it is proved that the union of two largest $\Theta$-classes of a Fibonacci cube or a Lucas cube is a maximal edge general position set.

Strong edge geodetic problem on complete multipartite graphs and some extremal graphs for the problem
Sandi Klavžar, Eva Zmazek, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: A set of vertices $X$ of a graph $G$ is a strong edge geodetic set if to any pair of vertices from $X$ we can assign one (or zero) shortest path between them such that every edge of $G$ is contained in at least one on these paths. The cardinality of a smallest strong edge geodetic set of $G$ is the strong edge geodetic number ${\rm sg_e}(G)$ of $G$. In this paper, the strong edge geodetic number of complete multipartite graphs is determined. Graphs $G$ with ${\rm sg_e}(G) = n(G)$ are characterized and ${\rm sg_e}$ is determined for Cartesian products $P_n\,\square\, K_m$. The latter result in particular corrects an error from the literature.

Genetic variability of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) at the Mediterranean margin of the distribution range
Mirzeta Memišević Hodžić, Barbara Fussi, Dušan Gömöry, Dalibor Ballian, 2021, pregledni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In Bosnia and Herzegovina, pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) occurs at the southern margin of its distribution range, close to the glacial refugia of this species. To assess the patterns of genetic diversity distribution at the rear edge of the Holocene colonization, we studied genetic variation in 20 pedunculate oak populations using 14 allozyme loci. Despite considerable differences among populations, neither the numbers of alleles nor genetic diversity showed any geographical trend within the studied area, although small isolated populations showed generally lower allelic richness. The Bayesian analysis of population structure indicated a kind of geographical pattern. We identified no signs of a recent bottleneck. The proximity to multiple glacial refugia explains the outcomes.

Evaluation of forest edge structure and stability in peri-urban forests
David Hladnik, Andrej Kobler, Janez Pirnat, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In the presented research, we studied the forest edge structure of urban and peri-urban forests on the outskirts of Ljubljana (Slovenia) consisting of a number of patches covering the collective surface of 1884 ha. They differ from each other according to the degree of fragmentation and by the share of the interior forest area. On the basis of LiDAR data, we conducted an analysis of the edges of the persistent forest patches and estimated them with regard to the land use they bordered on. The horizontal estimation of forest edges and the changes of forest edges, in the last decades, were estimated using digital orthophoto images of cyclic aerial surveys of Slovenia, from 1975 to 2018. The data, provided by LiDAR, were used to obtain an accurate estimate of forest edges and the metrics of their vertical canopy structure. On the basis of the canopy height model (CHM), we determined the height classes, the heights of the tallest trees, and indices of canopy height diversity (CHD) as variables subjected to a k-means cluster analysis. To determine the forest edge and trees stability, their heights and diameters at breast height (DBH) were measured and their canopy length and h/d (height/diameter) dimension ratios were estimated. In the study area of the Golovec forest patch, more than half of the forest edge segments (56%) border on residential buildings. After the construction of buildings, 54% of the newly formed forest edges developed a high and steep structure. Unfavorable h/d dimension ratio was estimated for 16% of trees, more among the coniferous than among the deciduous trees. Similar characteristics of newly formed forest edges bordering on built-up areas were determined in other sub-urban forest patches, despite the smaller share of such forest edges (19% and 10%, respectively). Tools and methods presented in the research enable the implementation of concrete silvicultural practices in a realistic time period and extend to ensure that adequate forestry measures are taken to minimize possible disturbances.

Formaldehyde barrier efficiency of melamine impregnated paper and melamine edge-banding tape surfaced particleboard and MDF
Sergej Medved, Jernej Forštnarič, 2018, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Particleboard and MDF are the most usable materials for furniture production, where emission of formaldehyde should be as low as possible. In order to improve aesthetic properties of particleboard and MDF they are covered with appropriate surfacing material. In most cases, melamine impregnated paper is used for face layers. But covering faces should be accompanied with covered edges, as due to low density of core layer formaldehyde much more easily emits from edges than from faces. The presented research shows differences in formaldehyde emission rate at unsurfaced and surfaced MDF and particleboard. For face layer, melamine impregnated papers with grammages of 130 g/m2 and 200 g/m2 were used, while for covering edges, melamine edge-banding tape was applied. In the research it was determined that higher barrier effect was achieved when impregnated paper with a grammage of 200 g/m2 was used. When surface was completely covered with impregnated paper and melamine edge-band tape, formaldehyde emission was lowered by between 83 % and 94 %.

The effects of habitat structure on red deer (Cervus elaphus) body mass
Klemen Jerina, 2007, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In most mammalian species, body mass is one of the key factors affecting an individual's fitness. It is therefore important to know the causes of its variability. The present paper analyses the influences of habitat structure and other environmental factors on body mass in red deer. The research is based on data sets concerning 3,920 culled red deer from the entire Slovenia, which are geo-referenced within a kilometer spatial accuracy, and on 28 spatially explicit raster layers of population density, habitat structure variables (e.g. topography, land use, forest structure, roads) and other environmental variables (e.g. air temperature, precipitation, supplementary feeding). After controlling for sex and age of the individual and its date of culling, body weight significantly differs between population areas, most likely as a result of genotype differences and genotype impact on the phenotype, and is also negatively dependent upon population density and the percentage of conifers and positively dependent upon annual mean air temperature and forest/meadow edge density. The stated environmental factors probably influence the achieved energy balance and, therefore, the body mass of red deer by conditioning the quantity and quality of food and energy expenditure of deer.

Light response of Fagus sylvatica L. and Abies alba Mill. in different categories of forest edge - vertical abundance in two silvicultural systems
Matjaž Čater, Andrej Kobler, 2017, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In managed Dinaric montane fir (Abies alba Mill.) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forests, the light response of young beech and fir in gap microsites was studied during three consecutive growing periods (2009, 2010, and 2011) under controlled environmental conditions in stands of single-tree and irregular shelterwood silvicultural system. According to maximal quantum yield, the different response between species in microsite light categories was evidenced for silver fir on microsites with predominating diffuse light and for beech on microsites with predominating direct light, respectively. Abundance and change of share in microsite light categories was compared over different elevation belts on comparable sites between two silvicultural systems. The share of forest edge area was bigger in the irregular shelterwood system. Change in width of forest edge (20, 30 and 40 m) did not affect the proportion and share of the microsite in both regions of different silvicultural system. Separation of microsite areas between both silvicultural systems, evident in lower elevation belts was not evident in the most conflict and highest elevation zone, while the absolute values of all categories above 700 m in both systems were almost identical, indicating the same, small-scale irregular shelterwood system, known also as the freestyle silvicultural approach.
