Title:Inventory of tree damage agents in intensive monitoring plots of forest ecosystems in Slovenia
Abstract:The inventory of tree damage agents in the Intensive Monitoring of Forest Ecosystems (IMGE) plots started in 2009 and has been carried out annually since then. The inventory of tree damage agents in IMGE plots is carried out according to the internationally accepted ICP Forests methodology. For all the most common tree species (beech, spruce, Austrian pine, Scots pine, common hornbeam), there is an increasing trend in defoliation. The most important cause of tree damage in IMGE plots are fungi (diseases). Insects were the second most important cause of average canopy damage in 2022. The third largest causal agent category was 'other', where competition was highlighted as a causal agent of both defoliation and canopy damage. As the monitoring is carried out in the same locations every year, it is possible to calculate trends in tree damage in the forest ecosystems studied and to investigate the causes and effects of stress factors, which is the primary purpose of IMGE plots.
