A historical overview of experimental solid combustion research in microgravity
Wilson Ulises Rojas Alva, Grunde Jomaas, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Studying solid combustion phenomena in microgravity environments can be complex, and this is furthered by many limitations and constraints in the available microgravity research platforms. Consequently, fire safety in spacecraft is also a complex subject. The main limitations found in the field are related to the microgravity quality, the duration of microgravity conditions, the rig capabilities in volume and size, time scales, length scales and the diagnostic systems, and these are therefore the focus in the current investigation. The laboratory capacity of ground-based platforms has remained somewhat stalled since 1990s, some drop towers have recently been upgraded to extend their performance. New space-based platforms have been or are being established and could extend the windows-of-opportunity to perform research. In addition, a discussion is provided on the implications of the fact that the phenomena studied in the experimental investigations and the type of material employed covers both programmatic and scientific needs. It is found that a handful of materials are most widely studied to quantify and characterise some of the phenomena, while some materials have been employed even in single experimental efforts. The current literature review provides a very comprehensive overview of previous experimental studies and the experimental methodologies utilised. Thus, this study can become an aid to planning for future studies.

Researching "on and in" global south countries : southeast Asia
Mohammed Ilyas, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Over the last decade, there has been an increasing awareness that colonialism continues through various overlapping iterations of coloniality, such as politics, economics, security and academia. Academics from global north countries and global south countries have highlighted and called for the dismantling of coloni-ality in its various iterations. Perhaps the most vocal decolonising calls have come from global north academics wanting to decolonise global north academia in the form of epistemic decolonisation. As such, in this article, I call on global north academics researching 'on and in' global south countries to employ decolonial me-thodologies to avoid inadvertently reinforcing coloniality. By utilising autoethnography and critical decolonial reflexivity, I offer ways for global north academics researching on or in global south countries to guard against reinforcing coloniality during their research.

Review of the research and evolution of landslides in the hinterland of Koroška Bela settlement (NW Slovenia)
Tina Peternel, Ela Šegina, Jernej Jež, Mateja Jemec Auflič, Mitja Janža, Janko Logar, Matjaž Mikoš, Miloš Bavec, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: This paper gives an overview of landslide research and the activity of landslides located above the Koroška Bela settlement in Northwest Slovenia. There are several landslides in this area and they pose a direct threat to the settlement below. The settlement is very densely populated (about 2,100 inhabitants) and has well-developed industry and infrastructure. It is built on deposits from past debris flows, indicating that large slope mass movements have occurred in the past. In this regard, the hinterland of Koroška Bela has been investigated since 2006, within the framework of various research, technical and European projects. The most extensive geological and geotechnical investigations were carried out after April 2017, when part of the Čikla landslide collapsed and mobilised into a debris flow. All of the investigations which have been carried out over the years revealed that the hinterland of Koroška Bela is characterised by high landslide activity due to geological, hydrogeological and tectonic conditions. In order to protect people and their property, it is essential to implement a holistic mitigation measure which includes remediation works (drainage works, debris flow breaker, etc.) and non-structural measures (monitoring system, early warning system, risk management, etc.). Regular and continuous monitoring of all landslides is also crucial to observe the landslide dynamics and evaluate the effectiveness of structural mitigation measures.

Anthropocene challenges for youth research : understanding agency and change through complex, adaptive systems
Reingard Spannring, Shé Mackenzie Hawke, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The Anthropocene has come to signify human dominance over the more-than-human world with all its negative consequences for this planet%s human and nonhuman inhabitants. As young people have started to express their feelings of concern and frustration with the inertia of the political elites, youth research, too, is called upon to reconsider and broaden its perspective. In particular, we argue, that the Anthropocene challenges anthropocentrism, dualisms, and traditional notions of agency in youth research, and must be critiqued through multi-disciplinary investigation. A transgression of the mainstream paradigm in youth research through the perspective of Complex Adaptive Systems Theory (CAS) could provide much needed analyses of a broad range of issues at the intersection of youth and ecological concerns. This article will therefore outline Complex Adaptive Systems Theory (CAS) as a multi-disciplinary tool, and apply it to two examples: the biosocial system of the Elwha River waterscape, and the #Fridays for Future strikes that are both motivated by environmental concerns. Finally, it discusses the possible contributions of a CAS approach in youth research to a better understanding of agency and change in ecologically turbulent times.
