Povzetek: Comprehensive glacial Quaternary studies involving geochronological methods, modelling of ice topography with the support of field geomorphological and geological data in the Balkan Peninsula are relatively scarce, although there is evidence of past glaciations in several mountain ranges. Here, we present research on the extent and timing of past glaciations on the northern Velebit Mt. in coastal Croatia and inferences of the climate during that time. Based on geomorphological and sedimentological evidence and using cosmogenic 36Cl surface exposure dating of moraine boulders, we provide an empirical reconstruction of past glaciers and compare this with the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM) simulations under different palaeoclimate forcings. The dating results show that the northern Velebit glaciers reached their maximum extent during the last glacial cycle before the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Maximum ice extent likely correlates with Marine Isotope Stage 5–4, although the exact timing cannot be determined at this point due to poorly known site- and time-specific denudation rates. Empirical reconstruction of the maximum extent suggests that the area covered by glaciers was ~116 km2. The-best fit PISM simulation indicates that the most likely palaeoclimate scenario for the glaciers of this size to form is a cooling of ~8 °C and a 10% reduction in precipitation from present-day levels. However, the best-fit simulation does not correctly model all mapped ice margins when changes in climatological parameters are applied uniformly across the model domain, potentially reflecting a different palaeoprecipitation pattern to today.

Passive sampling with active carbon fibres in the determination of organic pollutants in groundwater
Primož Auersperger, Anja Koroša, Nina Mali, Brigita Jamnik, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Legislation addressing the quality of groundwater and increasing concerns over public health calls for the development of analytical methods that can produce accurate and precise results at the ppt level. Passive sampling has been recognised as a helpful tool in identifying various organic pollutants in groundwater, even when their presence had not yet been identified through conventional groundwater quality monitoring. The article presents an analytical method involving a simple and cost-effective passive sampling device using Zorflex® activated carbon fibres (ACFs) for the qualitative monitoring of a broad range of organic pollutants in water in a single run. The applicability of the method developed was tested in three hydrogeological studies. In the first case, we present a non-targeted qualitative screening and a list of 892 different contaminants detected in the groundwater in Slovenia. In the second case, we discuss the presence and origin of organic compounds in the groundwater from a pilot area of the urban aquifer, Ljubljansko polje. The third case presents a comparison of results between passive and grab sampling. Passive sampling with ACFs confirmed the presence of a pollutant, even when it had not been previously detected through a quantitative method.

Povzetek: Aerosol vertical profiles are valuable inputs for the evaluation of aerosol transport models, in order to improve the understanding of aerosol pollution ventilation processes which drive the dispersion of pollutants in mountainous regions. With the aim of providing high-accuracy vertical distributions of particle mass concentration for the study of aerosol dispersion in small-scale valleys, vertical profiles of aerosol mass concentration for aerosols from different sources (including Saharan dust and local biomass burning events) were investigated over the Vipava valley, Slovenia, a representative hot-spot for complex mixtures of different aerosol types of both anthropogenic and natural origin. The analysis was based on datasets taken between 1–30 April 2016. In-situ measurements of aerosol size, absorption, and mass concentration were combined with lidar remote sensing, where vertical profiles of aerosol concentration were retrieved. Aerosol samples were characterized by SEM-EDX, to obtain aerosol morphology and chemical composition. Two cases with expected dominant presence of different specific aerosol types (mineral dust and biomass-burning aerosols) show significantly different aerosol properties and distributions within the valley. In the mineral dust case, we observed a decrease of the elevated aerosol layer height and subsequent spreading of mineral dust within the valley, while in the biomass-burning case we observed the lifting of aerosols above the planetary boundary layer (PBL). All uncertainties of size and assumed optical properties, combined, amount to the total uncertainty of aerosol mass concentrations below 30% within the valley. We have also identified the most indicative in-situ parameters for identification of aerosol type.

Preparation and characterization of the sulfur-impregnated natural zeolite clinoptilolite for Hg(II) removal fromaqueous solutions
Marin Ugrina, Martin Gaberšek, Aleksandra Daković, Ivona Nuić, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Sulfur-impregnated zeolite has been obtained from the natural zeolite clinoptilolite by chemical modification with Na2S at 150 °C. The purpose of zeolite impregnation was to enhance the sorption of Hg(II) from aqueous solutions. Chemical analysis, acid and basic properties determined by Bohem’s method, chemical behavior at different pHo values, zeta potential, cation-exchange capacity (CEC), specific surface area, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), as well as thermogravimetry with derivative thermogravimetry (TG-DTG) were used for detailed comparative mineralogical and physico-chemical characterization of natural and sulfur-impregnated zeolites.

Linear features on karst surfaces: an example from Krk Island
Ela Šegina, Čedomir Benac, France Šušteršič, Martin Knez, Jože Čar, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Krk Island located in the Dinaric karst is characterized by somewhat contradictory, yet undefined depressions of linear geometry. A comprehensive spatial analysis considering over 900 linear features served as a testing ground for revealing the specific circumstances required for the occurrence of the linear morphology on the surface of rather pure karst typically characterized by dolines. Morphological characteristics, spatial distribution and field evidence imply that linear features of different appearance are the outcome of several different mechanisms including speleogenesis and denudation, slope processes and erosion by the torrential surface runoff. Surface runoff occurred due to specific regional geological, morphological and climate conditions in the area. Recently, such linear features exhibit a dry valley- or dry gorge-like appearance. This example from the Dinarides provides insight into the possible circumstances that may cause a temporal surface runoff even in rather pure karst conditions. This knowledge is valuable for understanding other karst areas expressing temporal surface runoff or imprints of its past occurrences.

Distribution of Pb, Zn and Cd in stream and alluvial sediments in the area with past Zn smelting operations
Gorazd Žibret, Barbara Čeplak, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The sources of Zn, Pb and Cd in alluvial and stream sediments have been studied in the area of historical Zn smelting tradition. 30 samples of stream sediments and samples from 4 alluvial sediment profiles were collected. Fractions 0.125–0.063 and < 0.063 mm were analysed by the means of ICP-MS prior 4-acid digestion. The highest levels of Zn, Cd and Pb were detected in the alluvial sediments in the closest vicinity to the abandoned slag and ore roasting residue waste dumps, reaching 96 and 4520 mg/kg, 522 and 26,800 mg/kg and 3.7 and 31 mg/kg for Pb, Zn and Cd in stream and alluvial sediments, respectively. The Voglajna River then transports contamination particles into the Savinja River, which afterwards flows into the Sava River. Consequently, the anomaly can even be detected in the Sava River, more than 30 km downstream. Higher levels of Pb, Zn and Cd have been found in fraction < 0.063 mm compared to 0.125–0.063 mm fraction. Impacts of historically contaminated soil erosion and in particular the wash-out of Zn-smelting waste from the improperly managed waste dump were recognised as the dominant sources of Zn, Cd and Pb in the stream and alluvial sediments.

The environmental impact of historical Pb-Zn mining waste deposits in Slovenia
Miloš Miler, Špela Bavec, Mateja Gosar, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Mining waste deposits (MWDs) represent significant and constant pollution source for the environment worldwide, thus it is very important to identify and diminish their environmental impacts. The aim of this study was to determine long-term environmental impacts and their temporal variations of MWDs in Pb–Zn mining districts in Slovenia and assess stability of potentially harmful element (PHE)-bearing phases in stream water. The results showed that investigated MWDs are important source of PHEs in stream sediments and that PHEs mostly occur as fine-grained and liberated PHE-bearing ore minerals. MWDs have generally stronger impact on sediments of smaller streams draining MWDs and main streams close to their confluences, however, fine-grained PHE-bearing material is transported along major watercourses over long distances causing regional pollution. Main ore minerals are mostly soluble in stream water. However, measured PHE leaching potential of MWDs is negligible. PHE levels in stream waters are thus low, demonstrating that drainage of MWDs predominantly contributes to PHE pollution in solid particulate form. Possible long-term remediation solution that would reduce environmental impact is recovery of metals from fine grain size fractions of MWDs, which could become an effective practice in sustainable management of historical MWDs. However, further studies of MWDs’ secondary resource potential, processing technology and evaluation of environmental aspects of extraction are needed.

Emerging organic compounds in European groundwater
S. Y. Bunting, D. J. Lapworth, E. J. Crane, J. Grima-Olmedo, Anja Koroša, A. Kuczyńska, Nina Mali, L. Rosenqvist, M. E. van Vliet, A. Togola, B. Lopez, 2021, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In Europe, emerging organic compounds (EOCs) in groundwater is a growing research area. Prioritisationfor monitoring EOCs in Europe was formalised in 2019 through the development of thefirst voluntarygroundwater watch list (GWWL). Despite this, groundwater occurrence data in the peer reviewedliterature for Europe has not been reviewed to date. Questions surrounding the effect, toxicity, move-ment in the subsurface and unsaturated zone make the process of regulating EOC use difficult. The aim inEurope is to develop a unified strategy for the classification, and prioritisation of EOCs to be monitored ingroundwater. This paper compiles evidence from the recent published studies from across Europe, since2012, when the last major literature global review of EOCs in groundwater took place. A total of 39studies were identified for review based on specific selection criteria (geography, publication date, sample size>10, inclusion of EOCs data). Data on specific compounds, and associated meta-data, arecompiled and reviewed. The two most frequently detected EOCs, carbamazepine and caffeine, occurredin groundwater at concentrations of up to 2.3 and 14.8mg/L, respectively.

ROBOMINERS - Developing a bio-inspired modular robot-miner for difficult to access mineral deposits
Luís Lopes, Balázs Bodó, Claudio Rossi, Stephen Henley, Gorazd Žibret, Alicja Kot-Niewiadomska, Vitor Correia, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Within the ROBOMINERS project an innovative technology for the future exploitation of small and difficult to access mineral deposits is being studied. The project has two main objectives. First, the development of a bioinspired reconfigurable robotic miner prototype, able to navigate, explore and mine selectively with a certain degree of autonomy. The robot-miner will be able to work under different conditions, making the exploitation of many mineral deposits economically feasible, while reducing social and environmental impacts associated with conventional mining methods. The second objective is the creation of a vision of a new mining ecosystem, its function, parts, research roadmaps and visions for years 2030 and 2050, including creation of novel ideas from other sectors, particularly robotics. The robotic ecosystem concept will be tested in representative sites across Europe with simulations, showcasing the different mining environments and conditions where it can be applied.
