Evaluation of height changes in uneven-aged spruce–fir–beech forest with freely available nationwide lidar and aerial photogrammetry data
Anže Martin Pintar, Mitja Skudnik, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Tree height and vertical forest structure are important attributes in forestry, but their traditional measurement or assessment in the field is expensive, time-consuming, and often inaccurate. One of the main advantages of using remote sensing data to estimate vertical forest structure is the ability to obtain accurate data for larger areas in a more time- and cost-efficient manner. Temporal changes are also important for estimating and analysing tree heights, and in many countries, national airborne laser scanning (ALS) surveys have been conducted either only once or at specific, longer intervals, whereas aerial surveys are more often arranged in cycles with shorter intervals. In this study, we reviewed all freely available national airborne remote sensing data describing three-dimensional forest structures in Slovenia and compared them with traditional field measurements in an area dominated by uneven-aged forests. The comparison of ALS and digital aerial photogrammetry (DAP) data revealed that freely available national ALS data provide better estimates of dominant forest heights, vertical structural diversity, and their changes compared to cyclic DAP data, but they are still useful due to their temporally dense data. Up-to-date data are very important for forest management and the study of forest resilience and resistance to disturbance. Based on field measurements (2013 and 2023) and all remote sensing data, dominant and maximum heights are statistically significantly higher in uneven-aged forests than in mature, even-aged forests. Canopy height diversity (CHD) information, derived from lidar ALS and DAP data, has also proven to be suitable for distinguishing between even-aged and uneven-aged forests. The CHDALS 2023 was 1.64, and the CHDCAS 2022 was 1.38 in uneven-aged stands, which were statistically significantly higher than in even-aged forest stands.

Conceptual framework of coaches’ decision-making in conventional sports
Edvard Kolar, Roberto Biloslavo, Rado Pišot, Saša Veličković, Matej Tušak, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Introduction: A coach’s managerial and pedagogical tasks in the sports training process constitute the substantive core of their work, while decision-making serves as the fundamental method underpinning these tasks. Some decisions made by coaches result from deliberate, analytical thinking, which involves extensive information gathering, analysis, and discussion. Others, however, are made quickly and spontaneously, triggered by unforeseen situations during training or competition that demand immediate action. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to develop a conceptual framework for understanding coaches’ decision-making behavior in conventional sports. This framework aims to establish appropriate relationships between the various decisions coaches make during the training process and theoretical concepts related to decisionmaking, both in general and within the coaching context. Methods: To design the research, we used the methodology of a conceptual paper and a “model paper” approach, which seeks to build a theoretical framework that predicts relationships between distinct research concepts and scientific disciplines, aiming to integrate them into a cohesive model of coaches’ decision-making behavior. Results: The proposed conceptual framework encompasses a comprehensive range of situations that may arise during the sports training process and potential ways to address them. This framework identifies different types of decisions and characteristics associated with coaches’ decision-making behavior. It incorporates various sport-specific and general theories of decision-making and cognitive functioning to offer a deeper understanding of how coaches process and execute decisions in diverse contexts. Discussion: The developed conceptual framework outlines three primary types of decisions—strategic, tactical, and operational—each playing a distinct role in the broader sports training process. These decisions are based on different cognitive processes, which manifest in varied decision-making behaviors and are reinforced by specific leadership styles. The practical value of this framework lies in its potential application for selecting appropriate experts to address the diverse decision-making scenarios encountered in sports training. This ensures the alignment of decision-making styles with the requirements of specific training situations, thereby enhancing the effectiveness and outcomes of the coaching process.

Evaluating alternative transformation pathways of wood-based bioeconomy : application of an input–output model
Domen Arnič, Efstratios Loizou, Špela Ščap, Peter Prislan, Luka Juvančič, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The wood-based bioeconomy is one of the main pillars of sustainable transformation and decarbonisation of the economy, as it promotes the use of renewable resources, reduces reliance on fossil fuels, and supports the development of eco-friendly industries. The paper provides quantitative insight into the potential impacts of transformation of the wood-based bioeconomy in Slovenia, a small, export-oriented economy with ample, but sub-optimally used, forest resources. The analysis uses an input–output (I-O) model to estimate I-O multipliers of sectors representing the wood-based bioeconomy and to capture their direct and indirect impacts on the Slovenian economy. The baseline performance of the wood bioeconomy sectors and their potential to induce economic activity (Scenario A) are estimated with an adjusted I-O model (based on the national I-O table for 2015), in which hybrid sectors are divided into conventional and bio-based segments. Alternative transformation pathways are translated into four additional scenarios. While Scenario B foresees progress in efficiency and integration within the existing structure of transactions, Scenario C (increased energy use of wood biomass) and Scenarios D/D+ (technology- and capital-intensive restructuring) represent two extreme restructuring pathways of the sector. The results of scenario analysis with the I-O model show that the changes in the input requirement structure of the Slovenian wood-based bioeconomy could result in up to a 17% increase in total output, up to a 20% increase in the number of employees, and up to a 16% increase in incomes, all of them attributed to the most optimistic scenario (D+). The results of the study provide quantified assessments underpinning strategic planning for the wood-based bioeconomy, both in the industry and public policy spheres.

FoxP3+ regulatory T-cell quantities in nodal T-follicular helper cell lymphomas and peripheral T-cell lymphomas not otherwise specified and their impact on overall survival
Eva Erzar, Alexandar Tzankov, Janja Ocvirk, Biljana Grčar-Kuzmanov, Lučka Boltežar, Veronika Kloboves-Prevodnik, Gorana Gašljević, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The role of FoxP3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) in the tumour microenvironment (TME) of peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) is complex, and their impact on overall survival (OS) is unclear. This retrospective study aims to examine the quantity of FoxP3+ cells in the TME of PTCLs and reactive lymph nodes (LNs) and their impact on OS. A lower FoxP3+ cell quantity is found in PTCLs compared to reactive LNs. While differences in OS are observed between groups with high and low FoxP3+ cell quantities using various cut-off values, further analyses show no significant impact on the risk of death. This study suggests FoxP3+ cells as potential prognostic biomarkers but recommends the conduction of larger, multicentre studies with standardized protocols for confirmation. It also indicates that Treg-suppressing drugs may not be suitable for certain PTCL patients. Instead, combining therapies, including those enhancing Treg function, could be more effective in improving outcomes for PTCL patients, warranting further research.

The impact of bone marrow involvement on prognosis in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma : an 18F-FDG PET/CT volumetric segmentation study
Andrej Doma, Andrej Studen, Barbara Jezeršek Novaković, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Background: This study assessed the prognostic value of tumor burden in bone marrow (BM) and total disease (TD), as depicted on 18F-FDG PET/CT in 140 DLBCL patients, for complete remission after first-line systemic treatment (iCR) and 3- and 5-year overall survival (OS3 and OS5). Methods: Baseline 18F-FDG PET/CT scans of 140 DLBCL patients were segmented to quantify metabolic tumor volume (MTV), total lesion glycolysis (TLG), and SUVmax in BMI, findings elsewhere (XL), and TD. Results: Bone marrow involvement (BMI) presented in 35 (25%) patients. Median follow-up time was 47 months; 79 patients (56%) achieved iCR. iCR was significantly associated with TD MTV, XL MTV, BM PET positivity, and International Prognostic Index (IPI). OS3 was significantly worse with TD MTV, XL MTV, IPI, and age. OS5 was significantly associated with IPI, but not with MTVs and TLGs. Univariate factors predicting OS3 were XL MTV (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.29), BMI SUVmax (HR = 0.56), and IPI (HR = 1.92). By multivariate analysis, higher IPI (HR = 2.26) and BMI SUVmax (HR = 0.91) were significant independent predictors for OS3. BMI SUVmax resulted in a negative coefficient and hence indicated a protective effect. Conclusions: Baseline 18F-FDG PET/CT MTV is significantly associated with survival. BMI identified on 18F-FDG PET/CT allows appropriate treatment that may improve survival.

Postmortem chondrocyte viability in porcine articular cartilage : influence of time, temperature, and burial under winter conditions
Marko Cvetko, Tanja Knific, Robert Frangež, Helena Motaln, Boris Rogelj, Armin Alibegović, Mitja Gombač, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of time, temperature, and burial in a natural environment on the viability of chondrocytes in porcine femoral condyles using confocal laser scanning microscopy. Hind trotters from 10 pigs were buried or left unburied. Samples were collected daily and stained with a combination of vital dyes (calcein-AM and ethidium homodimer-1). The chondrocytes showed an intense staining corresponding to their vitality. In the first 3 days, viability decreased slowly and showed no statistical difference between buried and unburied samples. After the first 3 days, it decreased rapidly, with the viability of the buried samples being 66% on day 4, decreasing to 25% on day 8 and to 16% on day 10, while in the unburied samples it decreased to 43% on day 4, 13% on day 8 and 5% on day 10. Our results indicate a time, temperature, and burial dependent decrease in chondrocyte viability and suggest the use of chondrocyte viability as a marker for estimating PMI in both the natural environment and in animals, as well as its potential use in humans.

Transcriptomic and proteomic profiling of bi-partite and tri-partite murine iPSC-derived neurospheroids under steady-state and inflammatory condition
Julia Di Stefano, Laura Garcia-Pupo, Helena Motaln, Boris Rogelj, Peter Ponsaerts, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Induced-pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neurospheroid (NSPH) models are an emerging in vitro toolkit to study the influence of inflammatory triggers on neurodegeneration and repair in a 3D neural environment. In contrast to their human counterpart, the absence of murine iPSC-derived NSPHs for profound characterisation and validation studies is a major experimental research gap, even though they offer the only possibility to truly compare or validate in vitro NSPH responses with in vivo brain responses. To contribute to these developments, we here describe the generation and characterisation of 5-week-old CX3CR1eGFP+/- CCR2RFP+/- murine (m)iPSC-derived bi-partite (neurons + astrocytes) and tri-partite (neurons + astrocytes + microglia) NSPH models that can be subjected to cellular activation following pro-inflammatory stimulation. First, cytokine analysis demonstrates that both bi-partite and tri-partite NSPHs can be triggered to release IL6 and CXCL10 following three days of stimulation with, respectively, TNFα + IL1β + IFNγ and LPS + IFNγ. Additionally, immunocytochemical analysis for G3BP1 and PABPC1 revealed the development of stress granules in both bi-partite and tri-partite NSPHs after 3 days of stimulation. To further investigate the observed signs of inflammatory response and cellular stress, we performed an untargeted transcriptomic and proteomic analysis of bi- and tri-partite NSPHs under steady-state and inflammatory conditions. Here, using the combined differential gene and protein expression profiles between unstimulated and stimulated NSPHs, Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) confirms the activation of canonical pathways associated with inflammation and cellular stress in both bi-partite and tri-partite NSPHs. Moreover, our multi-omics analysis suggests a higher level of downstream inflammatory responses, impairment of homeostatic and developmental processes, as well as activation of cell death processes in stimulated tri-partite NSPHs compared to bi-partite NSPHs. Concluding, these results emphasise the advantages of including microglia in NSPH research to study inflammation-induced neurodegeneration in a 3D neural environment.

Oka-1 manifolds: new examples and properties
Franc Forstnerič, Finnur Lárusson, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In this paper we investigate Oka-1 manifolds and Oka-1 maps, a class of complex manifolds and holomorphic maps recently introduced by Alarcón and Forstnerič. Oka-1 manifolds are characterised by the property that holomorphic maps from any open Riemann surface to the manifold satisfy the Runge approximation and Weierstrass interpolation conditions, while Oka-1 maps enjoy similar properties for liftings of maps from open Riemann surfaces in the absence of topological obstructions. We also formulate and study the algebraic version of the Oka-1 condition, called aOka-1. We show that it is a birational invariant for compact algebraic manifolds and holds for all rational manifolds. This gives a Runge approximation theorem for maps from compact Riemann surfaces to uniformly rational projective manifolds. Finally, we study a class of complex manifolds with an approximation property for holomorphic sprays of discs. This class lies between the smaller class of Oka manifolds and the bigger class of Oka-1 manifolds and has interesting functorial properties.
