Ameloblastic fibroma
Marko Božič, Nataša Ihan Hren, 2006, pregledni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Background. Ameloblastic fibroma (AF) is a rare odontogenic tumour. It consists of odontogenic ectomesenchyme resembling the dental papilla and epithelium resembling dental lamina and enamel organ without dental hard tissues. Case report. A case report of a large ameloblastic fibroma involving the body of mandible from the lower Icff second incisor (32) to the lower leftsecond molar (37) is presented. To our knowledge this is the only case of ameloblastic fibroma reported from Slovenia. Conclusions. An aggressive surgical treatment is suggested because of the possibility of recurrence and the possibility of malignant transformation of an AF to an ameloblastic fibrosarcoma.

Small-bowel carcinoid presenting with acute bleeding detected upon wireless capsule endoscopy
Živa Mrevlje, Marko Sever, Borut Kocijančič, 2005, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Background. Intestine carcinoid usually presents with clinical symptoms and signs deriving from its endocrinological influences and rarely bleeds profusely. Case report. We present a patient with intestinal bleeding of unknown origin. After conventional diagnostic procedures only wireless capsuleendosopy was able to discover a tumour of small bowel, which was the reason of bleeding. On patohistological examination after the surgical resection it proved to be a small bowel carcinoid. Conclusions. There are indications that WCE, besides being the first small bowel imaging technique, is a very important diagnostic tool, deserving consideration in the early phases of diagnosing small-bowel disease, especially in less intensive or occult bleeding.

Quantitative analysis of fine needle aspiration biopsy samples
Mirjana Rajer, Marko Kmet, 2005, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is one of the methods used in tumour evaluation. Since a certain number of tumour cells are needed for a complete diagnostic algorithem, we wanted to test how many cells remain in the needle and syringe after routine stains have been made and which factors influence this number. The remaining cells are used in ancillary diagnostic procedures. Material and methods. One hundred fifty two FNAB samples of tumours of the breast, thyroid and lymph nodes were included in our study. We counted the cells which were left in the needle and the syringe after the standard smears had been made. Buerker-Tuerks chamber was used for this purpose. Results. The number of cells depended on the organ from which the cells had been aspirated,on the type of tumour and, in the case of breast cancer, also on thelevel of experience of the FNAB performer. The percentage of samples with too few cells for all modern diagnostic methods (<5x105) is lowest in FNAB of lymph nodes (4.9%), followed by breast (16.7%) and thyroid (18%). Conclusions. We concluded that FNAB in the majority of cases grants a sufficient number of cells for the standard microscopic evaluation and also ancillary diagnostic procedures.

Electroporator for in vitro cell permeabilization
Marko Puc, Karel Flisar, Stanislav Reberšek, Damijan Miklavčič, 2001, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The use of high voltage electric pulse technology, electroporation, in cell biology, biotechnology and medicine has attracted an enormous interest. Electroporation is a transient phenomenon that increases the permeability of cell plasma membrane. In the state of high permeability, the plasma membrane allows small and large molecules to be introduced into the cytoplasm, althoughthe cell plasma membrane represents a considerable barrier for them inits normal state. The effectiveness of electroporation depends on many parameters that can be divided into the parameters of the electric field and the parameters that define the state of cells and their surrounding i.e, temperature, osmotic pressure, etc. In this article, we present a prototype electroporator GT-1 for in vitro electropermeabilization that we have developed. Our electroporator offers a vast flexibility of parameters and can generate high and low voltage pulses, of which the latter ones are used for electrophoretic transfer of charged molecules through permeabilized cell plasma membrane.
