New recordings of opisthobranch mollusks (Mollusca: Opisthobranchia) in the Slovenian portion of the Adriatic Sea
Lovrenc Lipej, Borut Mavrič, Sašo Moškon, 2012, drugi znanstveni članki

Povzetek: Four opisthobranch species have been recorded in Slovenian coastal waters for the very first time: Tylodina perversa, Janolus cristatus, Eubranchus tricolor and Dicata odhneri. The first three were to some extent expected. D. odhneri was found on two occasions, representing new data on this rather rare and less known nudibranch species. The total number of recorded opisthobranch gastropod species is now 70.

First record of the bryozoan Tricellaria inopinata (dʼHondt & Occhipinti Ambrogi, 1985) from the Slovenian sea
Ana Fortič, Borut Mavrič, 2018, drugi znanstveni članki

Povzetek: In this paper we present the first record of Tricellaria inopinata d’Hondt & Occhipinti Ambrogi, 1985 for the Slovenian coastal sea. The colonies of this bryozoan were found attached to the mussel shells in the sight of Sečovlje, Strunjan and Debeli rtič mussel cultures from April to October 2018 and in Valdoltra harbour in November 2018. After the introduction into the Lagoon of Venice in the 1980s and its rapid spread throughout the lagoon in the following years, the species was regarded as an invasive taxon for that area and it is highly expected to colonize the whole Northern Adriatic region. The status of T. inopinata and its ecological impact has yet to be determined for the Slovenian coastal sea.

Evaluation of metallothioneins in blue mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) as a biomarker of mercury and cadmium exposure in the Slovenian waters (Gulf of Trieste): a long-term field study
Andreja Ramšak, Janez Ščančar, Milena Horvat, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: In order to assess the spatial distribution and temporal trends of pollution with metals in the coastal sea of Slovenia, the level of metallothioneins (MT) was determined in blue mussels from three sampling locations, twice per year for a period of 10 years. MT concentrations ranged from 45 to 163 μg g-1 w.w. in March, and from 46 to 144 μg g-1 w.w. in the September sampling. The metals content was determined in whole mussel tissue once per year at two stations. The cadmium (Cd) concentration was in the range from 0.50 to 1.11 mg kg-1, while the concentration of mercury (Hg) was in the range from 0.70 to 0.237 mg kg-1. Results revealed no significant seasonal differences or differences between sampling sites in MT content, as well as variations in the content of Cd and Hg in mussels’ tissue during the examined period. The MT and metal content in mussels are not well correlated and other factors may have caused the fluctuations observed in MT content between years. This supports the notion that biomonitoring data have to be interpreted cautiously, taking into account various other factors that may influence MT induction.

Rocky macrozoobenthos mediolittoral community in the Gulf of Trieste (North Adriatic) along a gradient of hydromorphological modifications
Valentina Pitacco, Borut Mavrič, Martina Orlando-Bonaca, Lovrenc Lipej, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Despite the increasing urban and industrial development in coastal areas our knowledge on direct consequences of coastal modifications on benthic communities is still limited. The aim of the present study was to assess the response of rocky macrozoobenthos mediolittoral communities to human-induced hydromorphological pressures. Sampling was carried out by SCUBA diving and snorkeling in June 2008. Ten sites were selected along a gradient of hydromorphological alterations in the southern part of the Gulf of Trieste. Variables used to describe the stressor gradient were: water retention (from normal hydrology in unprotected coast to closed areas with only one opening), substrate composition, texture and rugosity. Despite natural differences between upper and lower mediolittoral subbelts, the present work showed that human-induced alterations of the coastal zone impact biological assemblages. There was a marked difference in biodiversity among sites with pristine conditions and stressed zones, mainly due to evenness of species distribution. Structural complexity of the substrate resulted to be the main factor influencing benthic diversity in the upper mediolittoral subbelt, while in the lower subbelt also the human-induced water retention seemed to play a key role. Anyhow, this response was complex, and the major human-induced alterations considered had different level of pressure within the two subbelts. The current study has a good potential to contribute to existing coastal assessment methods, since the impact of hydromorphological pressures on mediolittoral communities was almost neglected in the past. However, further work is needed to fully explain the impact of main human-induced threats on benthic communities.

New records of opistobranch gastropods in the waters off Slovenia (Gulf of Trieste, Northern Adriatic Sea)
Lovrenc Lipej, Borut Mavrič, Jan Simič, Domen Trkov, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The paper deals with four opisthobranch molluscs, which were found in the Slovenian marine waters as new records. The pleurobranchomorph Pleurobranchea meckeli was found on two occasions on muddy detritic bottom in the Gulf of Piran in June of 2013 and 2014. The nudibranch Favorinus branchialis was found in May and June 2014 on turf vegetation in a very shallow area off the pier in Koper harbour. Its spawn with white eggs was also found nearby. The second nudibranch Facelina rubrovittata was found in March 2010 crawling in the intertidal zone of the Nature reserve Strunjan. The third nudibranch Dondice banyulensis was found in waters of the Nature Monument Debeli rtic on sedimentary bottom. With the fi nding of these four species, the total number of opisthobranchs recorded to date in the Slovenian part of the Adriatic Sea increased to 75 species.

Recurrence of Sargassum vulgare C. Agardh in Slovenian coastal waters (Adriatic Sea)
Martina Orlando-Bonaca, Borut Mavrič, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Perennial species from the genus Sargassum are considered to be indicators of high environmental quality and are therefore used in the assessment of the Ecological Status of Mediterranean coastal waters according to the European Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC). Over the past three decades a signifi cant decline in Sargassum populations has been reported in the Gulf of Trieste, as well as in other Adriatic and Mediterranean areas. In Slovenian coastal waters the presence of Sargassum spp. had not been confi rmed since 1980, after a severe decline due to overgrazing by the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. Recently, however, some thalli of S. vulgare were found in Piran Bay. The recurrence of this species is discussed in the paper, as well as the possible causes that led to the non-recovery in its populations in last decades in Slovenian coastal waters.

Occurrence of giant tun, Tonna galea (Linnaeus, 1758) (Gastropoda: Tonnidae) in the marine waters off Slovenia (northern Adriatic Sea)
Manja Rogelja, Lovrenc Lipej, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: On 1st December 2018 a fisherman caught a specimen of the giant tun Tonna galea (Linnaeus, 1758) in the bottom trammel net for flounders, approximately 1 Nm outside the town of Izola. The net was placed on a muddy bottom at 20 m of depth. This is the second record of T. galea in the Slovenian waters (Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic Sea). Another specimen (the first one) was previously reported in October 2015 in the waters off Piran. By including T. galea in the checklist of Slovenian marine malacofauna, at least 370 gastropod species were up to date recorded in the Slovenian part of the Adriatic Sea.

On the occurrence of the wreckfish Polyprion americanus in the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea)
Nicola Bettoso, Lisa Faresi, Alessandro Felluga, Lovrenc Lipej, 2020, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: On 3rd June 2018 three juvenile specimens of Polyprion americanus were captured in the Gulf of Trieste. The wreckfish is a long-lived deep-water demersal species characterized by an extended pelagic juvenile phase. The juvenile forms are recurrently recorded in the northern Adriatic and due to data deficiency for this species, original morphometric data are shown. The occurrence of P. americanus in the Gulf of Trieste is not a typical case of thermophilic species moving northward due to Mediterranean tropicalization, rather its recurrent appearance could be investigated for specific hydrological conditions coupled to its peculiar life span.
