Electrochemical corrosion tests on steel in alkali-activated materials
Nina Gartner, Miha Hren, Tadeja Kosec, Andraž Legat, 2021, published scientific conference contribution

Abstract: One of the potential alternatives to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) are Alkali-Activated Materials (AAMs). The service life of reinforced concrete structures greatly depends on the corrosion resistance of embedded steel reinforcement. Due to the wide range of AAMs and their diverse properties, corrosion processes of steel in these materials are relatively unknown. Corrosion monitoring methods or their interpretations in certain cases cannot be directly transferred from the ones for OPC materials. The chemical compositions of pore solution in different AAMs influence the results of electrochemical measurements and their interpretations. Within this research, three different alkali-activated mortar mixes were prepared, based on fly ash, slag or metakaolin. Pore solutions were extracted from each mortar andchemical analysis was acquired. Different electrochemical corrosion measurements were performed on steel submerged to synthetic pore solutions. In parallel, ordinary carbon steel reinforcing bar was installed in the same types of alkali-activated mortar mixes. Specimens were exposed to wet/dry cycles with saline solution and periodic measurements of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed. Measured parameters in both systems were analysedand compared. It was concluded that electrochemical measurements in pore solutions can provide basic overview on corrosion behaviour in different AAMs environments. Periodic EIS measurements enabled monitoring of corrosion initiation and propagation on steel reinforcement in AAMs, although the information on the corrosion type is missing. Interpretation of results depends on visual analysis of corrosion damages after the end of exposure, providing information on corrosion type and intensity. The continuation of research on corrosion monitoring techniques will be performed by using Electrical Resistance (ER) sensors and Coupled Multi-Electrode Array (CMEA) sensors.

Appropriate sound insulation of facades as a measure to ensure acceptable acoustic comfort in residential buildings
Mihael Ramšak, 2020, published scientific conference contribution

Abstract: Wherever possible, the environment with residential buildings should be protected from the effects of noise sources by environmental noise reduction measures. If such measures cannot reduce the noise level in the environment to an acceptable level, acceptable acoustic comfort in the residential buildings shall be ensured by adequate sound insulation of the facades, which is the main topic of this paper. The paper outlines some of the criteria for providing good acoustic comfort in the residential buildings, on the basis of which the conditions and necessary measures for providing sufficient sound insulation of the facade elements are discussed. Since, in addition to the noise from the environment, the acoustic comfort in apartments is also affected by the noise from adjacent apartments in the building, the link between the sound insulation performance of facades and audibility of the speech noise form adjacent apartments is also discussed.

Plasma membrane fluidity alterations in cancerous tissues
Marjeta Šentjurc, Mihael Sok, Gregor Serša, 1998, original scientific article

Abstract: Plasma membrane is a heterogeneous structure with several coexisting domains having different fluidity characteristics. It plays an important role in the control of cell growth, differentiation and transformation. Fluidity of the whole plasma membrane reflects the ordering and dynamics of phospholipid acyl chains in specific membrane domains, as well as the fraction of each domain inthe membrane. Changes in the membrane fluidity affect processes on the membrane such as transport, enzyme activities and expression of the redeptors. In this paper we present results of our recent electron paramagneticresonance (EPR) studies of plasma membrane fluidity characteristics, which take into account heterogeneous nature of the plasma membrane, By the computer simulation of the EPR spectra line-shapes, the number of coexisting domains in the plasma membrane, their relative portion inthe membrane as well as the ordering and dynamics of each domain be determined. Therefore, we could distinguish the contribution of the relative portion of each domain from the contribution of fulidity alterations in the domain to the entire fluidity changes in the membrane. Two examples will be discussed: membrane fluidity characteristics of excised lung tumor tissues andinfluence of microtubule depolymerizing agent vinblastine on membrane fluidity of vinblastine sensitive and resistant HeLa cells.

First experiences in the development of slovenian sustainable building indicators
Sabina Jordan, Friderik Knez, Miha Tomšič, Marjana Šijanec-Zavrl, 2020, published scientific conference contribution

Abstract: The construction sector is recognised as having a key impact on the life on Earth. Consequently, the EU has set clear environmental goals for 2030 and 2050, and is developing policies and tools to achieve them. One of the tools for achieving these goals is to establish a system for the evaluation of the environmental performance of buildings, with the priorities of reducing GHG emissions, saving with natural resources and preserving the environment, while maintaining sustainable development and ensuring a healthy living environment. Slovenia has joined in achieving this goal with a study on the state-of-play, commissioned a few years ago by the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning, as the starting point for the development of sustainable building indicators (SBIs). The research, which included an analysis of the Slovenian legislation, commercial certification systems for sustainable buildings and development in the field of green public procurement, exposed complementary but rather different goals and views. It further showed that the Level(s), which provides a common EU approach in assessing the environmental performance of buildings, seems to be the most appropriate framework and the basis for the development of the Slovenian system of SBIs. The development of the Slovenian SBIs is currently underway within the project LIFE IP CARE4CLIMATE with the preparation of guidelines, data sources and procedures for determining the value of individual indicators for the assessment of buildings. Initial research with key construction stakeholders has shown that the solution must be linked to the national building legislation, computational methods and software tools, and also to the established planning procedures. The analyses have also shown that, parallel to developing such a system, it is essential to provide a functional supporting environment and a specific, purposely designed information platform to connect the stakeholders with the developers of the sustainable building indicators system.

Conservative treatment in head and neck cancer
Miha Žargi, 1997, review article

Abstract: The incidence of head and neck cancer in Slovenia is increasing, especially inmale population. Late diagnosis, in advanced of disease, influences not onlythe treatment results but also the treatment strategies and modalities: aggressive surgery combined with radiotherapy and reconstructive procedures and chemotherapy in inoperable tumors is therefore indicated too frequently instead of organ sparing treatment. Early detection should be improved, especially in the target population, and all up-to-date diagnostic technology should be employed in centralized multidisciplinary pre-treatment assessment. Good co-operation between surgeons, radio and chemotherapists in planning, performing as well as in evaluating the treatment is also a basic condition for better implementation of organ sparing approaches in head and neck cancer.

Voice quality after radiation therapy of early glottic cancer
Irena Hočevar-Boltežar, Miha Žargi, 1997, original scientific article

Abstract: Radiation therapy is generally accepted as a successful treatment modality forearly glottic cancer offering an acceptable voice quality after the treatment. In order to evaluate objectively the voice quality in irradiated patients and to eliminate the influence of decreasing voice quality as a result of normal aging, the results of the acoustic analysis of voice in 20 patients with early glottic cancer treated with radiation therapy were compared to the results of 20 age-matched volunteers. The results established worse voice quality in the irradiated group but the difference was not significant except in amplitude perturbation quotient which expresses the instability of loudness. In order to identity the factors which could influence the quality of voice after irradiation of the laryngeal carcinoma, the results of laryngoscopy and the biopsy extension, were correlated with theresults of the perceptive voice evaluation and the results of acoustic voice analysis. No significant influence of the stated factors on the voice quality of the patients was established. Only the irregular glottic gap duringphonation indicated to be connected with very hoarse voice. In conclusion, radiation therapy of early glottic cancer results in an abnormal, but still satisfactory voice quality when compared to the voice quality of normal age-matched speakers. The hoarseness is the results of instability of pitch and specifically the instability of amplitude (loudness). The voice quality after the treatment can be influenced by the tumor extension and localization, the sequels of excisional biopsy, and the radiation therapy or functional disorder. All the stated factors are very intermingled and are probably acting together.

Mihael Brenčič, 2023, review article

Abstract: Obravnavana sta prevoda pisem Johanna Jacoba Ferberja (1743–1790), švedskega geologa in mineraloga, ki je septembra 1771 potoval preko Slovenije.
