Abstract: Z uporabo recikliranih odpadkov v gradbeništvu nadomeščamo naravne materiale in s tem vzpostavljamo krožno gospodarstvo na lokalnem nivoju.

Abstract: The environmental properties of three geotechnical composites made by recycling wastes were investigated on a laboratory scale and in the field with the use of lysimeters designated for the revitalization of degraded mining sites. Composites were prepared by combining the mine waste with paper-mill sludge and foundry sand (Composite 1), with digestate from municipal waste and paper ash (Composite 2), and with coal ash, foundry slag and waste incineration bottom ash (Composite 3). The results of laboratory leaching tests proved that Composites 1 and 3 are envi- ronmentally acceptable, according to the legislative limits, as the potentially hazardous substances were immobilized, while in Composite 2, the legislative limits were exceeded. In the field lysimeters, the lowest rate of leaching was determined for optimally compacted Composites 1 and 3, while for Composite 2 the leaching of Cu was high. This study proved that optimally installed Composites 1 and 3 are environmentally acceptable for use in construction as an alternative to virgin materials, for the revitalization of degraded mining sites or, along with Composite 2, for closure operations with landfills. In this way, locally available waste streams are valorised and channelized into a beneficial and sustainable recycling practice.

Freeze-casting of highly porous cellulose-nanofiber-reinforced γ-Al2O3 monoliths
Hermina Hudelja, Thomas Konegger, Bernd Wicklein, Janko Čretnik, Farid Akhtar, Andraž Kocjan, 2021, original scientific article

Abstract: Freeze-casting is a powerful consolidation technique for the fabrication of highly porous and layered-hybrid materials, including ceramic-metal composites, and porous scaffolds for catalysis, bone substitutes and high- performance membranes. The aqueous suspensions to be freeze-casted usually contain dense particles facilitating macroporous, layered ceramics with dense (nonporous) struts. In the present study, hierarchical macro-mesoporous alumina (HMMA) monoliths were successfully prepared by freeze-casting of aqueous suspensions containing hierarchically-assembled, mesoporous γ‒Al2O3 (MA) powder and cellulose nanofibers (CNF). As- prepared monoliths were ultra-porous (93.1–99.2%), had low densities (0.01–0.25 g/cm3), and displayed relatively high surface areas (91–134 m2/g), but were still remarkably rigid with high compressive strengths (up to 52 kPa). Owing to the columnar porosity and mesoporous nature of the struts the freeze-casted HMMA monoliths exhibited high permeability and high thermal insulation, the latter ranging from 0.039 W/m∙K to 0.071 W/m∙K, depending on pore orientation.

Development of groundwater flow models for the integrated management of the alluvial aquifer systems of Dravsko polje and Ptujsko polje, Slovenia
Ada Vengust, Anja Koroša, Janko Urbanc, Nina Mali, 2023, original scientific article

Abstract: With increasing exploitation of groundwater resources and implementation of various activities in their recharge areas, it is vital to conduct a comprehensive assessment of aquifers to ensure their conservation and sustainable management. In the present study, we used a comprehensive approach to conceptualise and identify the functioning of two connected aquifer systems in north-eastern Slovenia: the Quaternary porous aquifers Dravsko polje and Ptujsko polje. The study presents the conceptual models of both aquifers and their interconnectedness using separate mathematical-numerical models with the aim of ensuring an integrated management of these alluvial aquifer systems. It also highlights the importance of understanding connections between such systems for simulating groundwater flow and transport of different contaminants.

Review of the research and evolution of landslides in the hinterland of Koroška Bela settlement (NW Slovenia)
Tina Peternel, Ela Šegina, Jernej Jež, Mateja Jemec Auflič, Mitja Janža, Janko Logar, Matjaž Mikoš, Miloš Bavec, 2022, original scientific article

Abstract: This paper gives an overview of landslide research and the activity of landslides located above the Koroška Bela settlement in Northwest Slovenia. There are several landslides in this area and they pose a direct threat to the settlement below. The settlement is very densely populated (about 2,100 inhabitants) and has well-developed industry and infrastructure. It is built on deposits from past debris flows, indicating that large slope mass movements have occurred in the past. In this regard, the hinterland of Koroška Bela has been investigated since 2006, within the framework of various research, technical and European projects. The most extensive geological and geotechnical investigations were carried out after April 2017, when part of the Čikla landslide collapsed and mobilised into a debris flow. All of the investigations which have been carried out over the years revealed that the hinterland of Koroška Bela is characterised by high landslide activity due to geological, hydrogeological and tectonic conditions. In order to protect people and their property, it is essential to implement a holistic mitigation measure which includes remediation works (drainage works, debris flow breaker, etc.) and non-structural measures (monitoring system, early warning system, risk management, etc.). Regular and continuous monitoring of all landslides is also crucial to observe the landslide dynamics and evaluate the effectiveness of structural mitigation measures.

Mercury in the unconfined aquifer of the Isonzo/Soča River alluvial plain downstream from the Idrija mining area
Andrea Cerovac, Stefano Covelli, Andrea Emili, Elena Pavoni, Elisa Petranich, Asta Gregorič, Janko Urbanc, Enrico Zavagno, Luca Zini, 2018, original scientific article

Abstract: This work aims at evaluating mercury (Hg) occurrence, spatial distribution and speciation in groundwater of the Isonzo/Soča River upper alluvial plain downstream from the Idrija Hg mine (Western Slovenia). Several wells and piezometers were sampled both in static and dynamic mode. On the basis of hydrochemistry and isotopic composition, the main sources of groundwater were established. Hg concentrations in the Slovenian sector, supplied by local rainfall, are comparable to values measured close to the Isonzo River. Possible further Hg local sources have been suggested. Stability field analysis for the aqueous Hg species revealed that in the presence of chloride Hg solubility may be increased by the formation of chlorocomplexes. Mercury that rarely enters reduced surrounding conditions can be bound to sulphur to form polysulphide species depending on the pH of water. Since Hg-contaminated alluvial sediments of the Isonzo River may act as a secondary Hg source in groundwater, a borehole was dug down to the water table. Mercury content and speciation revealed that cinnabar (HgS) is the prevalent form followed by the matrix-bound Hg (Hgbound). Variations of the physico-chemical boundary conditions, as well as the raising/lowering of the water table, may be locally responsible for the slight variability of Hg concentrations in the aquifer.

Carboxypeptidase cathepsin X defines a multifunctional role of gamma-enolase in cancer
Tjaša Vižin, Anja Pišlar, Ib Jarle Christensen, Hans Jørgen Nielsen, Pika Meško-Brguljan, Janko Kos, 2022, original scientific article

Abstract: Gamma-enolase enzymatic activity is involved in glycolysis, a prevalent process in cancer cell metabolism. Additionally, gamma-enolase has a pro-survival function, exhibited through the active site at the C-terminal end of the molecule. This activity is regulated by cysteine peptidase cathepsin X, which cleaves two amino acids at C-terminal end of gamma-enolase. In clinical practice, the determination of gamma-enolase as a tumour marker does not differ between total, uncleaved and C-terminally cleaved forms. However, levels of uncleaved gamma-enolase alone may provide additional clinical information. In this study we analysed cathepsin X, C- terminally uncleaved and total gamma-enolase in tumour cell lines and sera from 255 patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) by western blot, immunoprecipitation, enzymatic activity, ELISAs and ECLIA. Results show that uncleaved gamma-enolase, rather than total gamma- enolase, exhibits different levels in cells, being the highest in those, derived from metastatic sites or highly invasive tumours. Gamma-enolase is secreted into the extracellular space predominantly as an uncleaved form and levels were congruent to those within the cells. Furthermore, levels of uncleaved gamma-enolase in cells are inversely related to cathepsin X protein level and its enzymatic activity. Uncleaved gamma-enolase is also predominant form in sera of patients with CRC. Both forms exhibit similar stage dependent distribution, with slightly elevated levels in stage IV patients. Higher levels of total gamma-enolase are significantly related to shorter survival in patients with metastatic CRC. Results support evidence of additional pro-survival function of gamma-enolase in cancer. Future studies should focus on analysis of uncleaved gamma-enolase in tumour samples, which may provide additional relations to clinical indicators of disease progression.
