There are two search modes available: simple and advanced. Simple search can include one or more words from the title, summary, keywords or full text, but does not allow the use of search operators. Advanced search allows to limit the number of search results by entering the search terms of different categories in the search window, as well as the use of Boolean search operators (AND, OR and AND NOT). In search results short formats of records are displayed and some data are displayed as links, which open a detailed description of the material (title link) or perform a new search (author or keyword link).

Epibenthic macrofauna on an artificial reef of the Northern Adriatic Sea : a five-years photographic monitoring
Nicola Bettoso, Lisa Faresi, Ida Floriana Aleffi, Valentina Pitacco, 2023, original scientific article

Abstract: Artificial reefs (ARs) are man-made structures used with the aim of improving fisheries and increasing natural production of biological resources. In 2006 an AR made of three types of modules was sunk near an underwater sewage outfall. The objectives of the project were: (a) to use the AR to restock some target species of commercial interest and (b) to promote biodiversity in selected areas. The epibenthic macrofauna that had settled on this AR was annually monitored for five years (2007-2011) using non-destructive photographic methods. A total of 88 taxa from 8 phyla were identified, with a predominance of Porifera, Mollusca and Ascidiacea. Among the types of modules used to construct the AR, polyethylene panel nets were functional for bivalve settlement in the first year, whereas concrete structures seemed to perform best in promoting biodiversity in terms of species richness in the long term. Nevertheless, the 5-year monitoring period was too short to speculate on the stability or homeostasis of communities settled on the AR in terms of ecological succession.

Improvement of the ecological status of the Cymodocea nodosa meadow near the Port of Koper
Martina Orlando-Bonaca, Erik Lipej, Romina Bonaca, Leon Lojze Zamuda, 2022, original scientific article

Abstract: Seagrass beds are more or less the marine counterpart of tropical rainforests, and their health is related to different anthropogenic stressors, including navigation routes and port activities. In the Mediterranean Sea, Cymodocea nodosa is considered an effective indicator of environmental change, due to its universal distribution, sensitivity to various natural and anthropogenic pressures, and the measurability of the species’ responses to impacts. The aim of this study is to present the changes in the assessment of the ecological status of the C. nodosa meadow near the port of Koper, which was evaluated as Bad in 2018. The results show a significant improvement in the ecological status of the meadow, which can be attributed to a reduction in anthropogenic stressors.

Socioeconomic and environmental importance of the fish market and fisheries in Slovenia
Alex Mavrič, Andreja Ramšak, Štefan Bojnec, 2021, original scientific article

Abstract: The paper analyses the importance of fisheries and the fish market in Slovenia based on primary information obtained from interviews and secondary data obtained from various sources. The study focuses on the sustainability aspects of fisheries and the fish market in Slovenia, emphasizing socioeconomic factors, problems and anomalies in the market, ecological aspects, and other sustainable development factors as environmental protection and the implementation of sustainable development measures, as well as overfishing and ineffective fisheries management. Most of shortcomings are related to the traceability of fish in the value chain, misleading customers with false information, and price-quality deception. While these findings are country-specific, they have broader implications and highlight opportunities for improving the fisheries and fish market situation in Slovenia and the international trade of fish and fishery products.

New evidence of the occurrence of Knoutsodonta Pictoni (Nudibranchia, Onchidorididae) in the Northern Adriatic
Ana Fortič, Domen Trkov, Lovrenc Lipej, Marco Fantin, Saul Ciriaco, 2021, original scientific article

Abstract: The authors present new data on the recently described nudibranch Knoutsodonta pictoni Furfaro & Trainito, 2017 in the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea). We hereby present the first record of this species in Slovenian territorial waters. A total of 22 specimens of K. pictoni were recorded by diving in the period from 2017 to 2021 at five localities in the Gulf of Trieste. All specimens were found in precoralligenous habitats in the depth range of 5 to 9 m, feeding on the encrusting bryozoan Reptadeonella violacea (Johnston, 1847). Numerous finds indicate that this only recently described and therefore little known nudibranch is much less rare than previously thought.

After more than forty-five years a new finding of Cystoseira foeniculacea f. latiramosa in the coastal sea of Slovenia
Martina Orlando-Bonaca, Domen Trkov, 2020, original scientific article

Abstract: Canopy-forming macroalgae, especially Cystoseira sensu lato species, create so-called brown algal forests, which are among the most productive habitats in shallow coastal waters. In the Mediterranean Sea these species have been disappearing over the past two decades due to multiple anthropogenic pressures, and are gradually being replaced by smaller and persistent turf-forming algae. A decrease in the number of species and in the cover of canopy-forming taxa (especially Cystoseira s.l. spp.) has been detected over the last ten years also in Slovenian coastal waters. This paper reports a recent finding of Cystoseira foeniculacea f. latiramosa, which was missing from Slovenian marine waters for more than four decades.

Marine cryptobenthic fish fauna of Slovenia (northern Adriatic Sea)
Domen Trkov, Borut Mavrič, Martina Orlando-Bonaca, Lovrenc Lipej, 2019, original scientific article

Abstract: Cryptobenthic fish fauna constitute one of the less studied fish groups in the Adriatic Sea. As regards Slovenian coastal waters, only few papers dealing with cryptobenthic fish assemblages have been published to date. All the available data about cryptobenthic fish species in the Slovenian sea are presented in this paper, with particular interest in their geographic and depth distribution. Altogether 798 specimens of 11 different species were collected. Thorogobius macrolepis and Chromogobius quadrivittatus were found in Slovenian territorial waters for the first time only recently. The majority of fishes have been recorded using new techniques, associated with SCUBA diving equipment and the use of the narcotic Quinaldine.

Occurrence of giant tun, Tonna galea (Linnaeus, 1758) (Gastropoda: Tonnidae) in the marine waters off Slovenia (northern Adriatic Sea)
Manja Rogelja, Lovrenc Lipej, 2019, original scientific article

Abstract: On 1st December 2018 a fisherman caught a specimen of the giant tun Tonna galea (Linnaeus, 1758) in the bottom trammel net for flounders, approximately 1 Nm outside the town of Izola. The net was placed on a muddy bottom at 20 m of depth. This is the second record of T. galea in the Slovenian waters (Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic Sea). Another specimen (the first one) was previously reported in October 2015 in the waters off Piran. By including T. galea in the checklist of Slovenian marine malacofauna, at least 370 gastropod species were up to date recorded in the Slovenian part of the Adriatic Sea.

Biometry and population gender structure of three crab species (Crustacea: Decapoda) from sandy bottom in the northern Adriatic Sea
Mona Rezaei, Al Vrezec, Borut Mavrič, Lovrenc Lipej, 2019, original scientific article

Abstract: The aim of the study was to investigate the distribution and population structure of three species of crabs (Decapoda: Crustacea), Medorippe lanata, Liocarcinus depurator and Liocarcinus vernalis for their biometric relationships. A total of 1100 specimens of three species were caught from waters off the northern Adriatic Sea in December 2013. Biometric relationships and condition factor (Fulton’s coefficient index) were measured for all the studied species. Size dimorphism was also observed in M. lanata with females showing significantly larger carapace size than males without significant difference in wet weight. The studied species did not differ significantly in the results of the condition index.
