1. Associations between COVID-19 pandemic experiences and suicidal ideation among adolescents : the mediating role of life satisfaction, subjective wellbeing, and anxietyHelena Jeriček Klanšček, Petra Mikolič, Carolina Blanco Calvo, Saška Roškar, Špela Selak, Matej Vinko, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Introduction: The aim of this study was to examine associations between adolescents’ experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic and life satisfaction, subjective wellbeing, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Methods: Data were drawn from the 2022 cross-national Health Behavior in School-aged Children study conducted in Slovenia, using a representative sample of 8,638 adolescents aged 11, 13, 15, and 17 years (51.7% girls). Adolescents reported on their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic (hospitalization of a family member and perceived changes in relationships, school performance, future expectations, and family finances), life satisfaction, subjective wellbeing, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. A structural equation model (SEM) was tested, with pandemic-related experiences as predictors, mental health indicators as intervening variables, and suicidal ideation as the outcome. Results: Suicidal ideation was reported by 16.7% of adolescents. The model explained 45.4% of the variance in suicidal ideation. Perceived impacts of the pandemic on family relationships and future expectations, as well as the hospitalization of a family member, were associated with suicidal ideation both directly and indirectly through all three mental health indicators. The perceived impact on friendships was associated with suicidal ideation directly and indirectly via life satisfaction, whereas perceived changes in academic performance were associated with suicidal ideation both directly and indirectly via subjective wellbeing and anxiety. Pandemic-related changes in family relationships showed the strongest overall association with suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Pandemic-related family stressors and disruptions to future expectations were associated with suicidal ideation both directly and indirectly through poorer mental health indicators. These findings suggest the importance of integrated family- and school-based approaches to supporting adolescent mental health during periods of major societal disruption. Strengthening family support systems, early identification of anxiety symptoms, and school-based prevention programs may help mitigate adverse mental health outcomes among adolescents. The findings may also inform preparedness planning for future public health emergencies. 2. Understanding and managing imposter phenomenon within the marine science : insights from 314 years of cumulative experienceChristopher Cvitanovic, Tracy Ainsworth, Annette Breckwoldt, Amy Diedrich, Michael Fabinyi, Priscilla Lopes Florido, Albert Norström, Stefan Partelow, Gretta Pecl, Jerneja Penca, 2026, polemika, diskusijski prispevek, komentar Povzetek: Imposter phenomenon is widely felt in academia, yet its lived experience within marine science remains underexplored. To address this gap, in this commentary we draw on the collective reflections of a diverse group of interdisciplinary marine researchers who have (and continue to) experience imposter phenomenon. We examine how it emerges, how it affects our careers, and how we have learned to navigate it. Our experiences reveal a broad range of triggers, including toxic or exclusionary work cultures, disciplinary gatekeeping, comparison and performance pressure, gendered expectations, life transitions, and identity‐linked insecurities such as not fitting normative assumptions about what a “marine scientist” looks like. The impacts of imposter phenomenon were similarly varied: withdrawal from professional communities, reduced confidence, self‐limiting behaviours, avoidance of visibility, career instability, and emotional or physical strain. Building from this, we outline strategies that have helped us manage our imposter phenomenon over time. Supportive relationships (through mentorship, peer networks, and community) were central, as were professional therapy, leadership coaching, and building mental‐health literacy. Many of us found strength in reframing negative thoughts, setting boundaries, seeking inclusive environments, and building confidence through meaningful work and collaborations. Maintaining and prioritising physical well‐being, time in nature, and simple acts of kindness also played important roles in helping us overcome the challenges posed by imposter phenomenon. Importantly, several of us came to see that imposter phenomenon can carry a productive dimension. It can foster reflexivity, humility, and critical self‐awareness, qualities essential for thoughtful and ethical marine research. By sharing our own experiences, we hope to help build a marine science community where doubt is met with compassion and care, diverse forms of expertise and knowledge are valued, and all of us can do our best work without questioning our right to be here. 4. Differences in depression and sick leave due to stress at work among unemployed workers, reemployed workers, and survivors after company restructuringNataša Dernovšček Hafner, Katja Draksler, Metoda Dodič-Fikfak, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: This study examines the impact of corporate restructuring on workers' mental health, focusing on depression and sick leave due to severe stress among three groups affected by the 2009 restructuring of Slovenia’s largest textile company. A telephone survey was conducted with 185 workers who retained their jobs (survivors), 416 who were reemployed elsewhere, and 381 who became unemployed. Statistical analysis, including chi-squared tests and logistic regression, revealed significant differences in depression and stress-related sick leave among the groups. The unemployed were found to be nearly 2.5 times more likely to experience depression than survivors and 1.6 times more likely than reemployed workers. Additionally, the workers that became and remained unemployed were 1.7 times more likely to take sick leave due to severe stress, while still working, compared to survivors and 1.6 times more likely than the reemployed. The findings highlight the severe negative effects of company restructuring on workers' mental health, particularly for those who lost their jobs. The study also shows that reemployed workers experience significantly poorer mental health compared to those who remain with the company, underscoring the long-lasting psychological impact of job loss during corporate restructuring. 5. Mental health service preparedness during a pandemic : A Delphi study in SloveniaŠpela Selak, Nuša Crnkovič, Janja Horvat, Irena Makivić, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges for mental health, requiring many mental health services to reorganise. The aim of this study was to develop a set of consensus-based recommendations outlining measures and activities for the operation of mental health services during a potential pandemic in Slovenia. Methods To develop a preliminary list of measures, relevant literature, existing guidelines, and COVID-19 response practices were reviewed. These measures were then evaluated using a modified Delphi method. Eleven Slovenian mental health experts participated in 4 Delphi rounds to determine which measures should be implemented and at which stage of a potential future pandemic. Results Consensus was reached on 47 measures and activities. The majority were classified for implementation before or at the onset of a potential pandemic, with only a small number designated for implementation during the pandemic. Conclusions The identified measures and activities are discussed in relation to existing research and international frameworks. They represent consensus-based preparedness guidance for the organisation of mental health services during a pandemic or similar public health emergency and may inform the future development of national guidelines and strategic frameworks. 8. Adaptation of migrants returning to their historical homelandMarlan Negizbayeva, Yelena Dudinova, Anarkhan Zhumabayeva, Aigerim Tassilova, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The relevance of this research is determined by the fact that unsuccessful adaptation can lead to social isolation, unemployment, and other negative consequences, affecting the stability of society. This study aims to analyse the key factors and mechanisms that ensure successful sociocultural, economic, and psychological reintegration in the context of repatriates’ adaptation processes. The total number of respondents was 273 Kazakh repatriates. The sociocultural adaptation of Kazakh repatriates in Kazakhstan shows several key trends. Mastery of the language of the historical homeland (Kazakh) ranges from medium to high. Attitudes towards traditions are diverse, with more than a third of respondents highlighting the positive influence of traditions on social interaction. While half of the repatriates actively participate in cultural and social activities, challenges arise in balancing traditional values with modern societal norms. As regards economic adaptation, most repatriates successfully secure employment within a short period and develop stable labour relations. The study emphasises the need for targeted support programmes, such as language courses, cultural orientation activities, and psychological counselling, to address the multifaceted challenges of adaptation. 9. Multidimensional effects of Covid-19 lockdowns on youth athletes : evidence from Slovenian coachesSaša Pišot, Ivana Milovanović, Kaja Teraž, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The COVID-19 pandemic, which emerged in early 2020, caused widespread disruptions to youth sport, including curriculum-based physical activity, organized sports, and active transportation. This study investigated the impact of repeated lockdowns on organized youth sport participation, physical fitness, skill development, and psychosocial well-being in Slovenia. An online survey was conducted between November and December 2021 with 116 coaches of U13–U19 athletes across multiple sports disciplines. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric analyses were employed to examine participation trends, training adaptations, and perceived athlete outcomes. Following the first lockdown, 14.6% of athletes dropped out, while 6.5% of teams reported increased membership. After the summer break, participation rebounded, and the second lockdown had a smaller impact, indicating partial resilience in youth sport engagement. Training frequency and modality were substantially affected, with 20% of coaches not implementing remote sessions and fewer than half conducting post-lockdown fitness assessments. Coaches reported declines in general physical fitness (71%) and sport-specific skills (70%), heterogeneous changes in body mass, and reduced self-confidence and motivation in over 50% of athletes, whereas team spirit remained relatively stable. A significant association between perceived changes in body mass and motivation highlighted the role of physical self-concept in supporting engagement. These findings demonstrate that prolonged interruptions to organized youth sport have multidimensional effects on physical, technical, and psychosocial development. Future research should explore long-term consequences, identify effective mitigation strategies, and consider sport-specific, age, and gender-related factors to enhance resilience in youth sports systems under exceptional circumstances. 10. Anonymous : the problems, dilemmas and desires of Slovenian adolescents in online counsellingKsenija Lekić, Nuša Konec Juričič, Petra Tratnjek, Marjan Cugmas, Darja Kukovič, Borut Jereb, 2014, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Introduction: Online counselling represents a new medium for finding health information. The aim of the research is to determine the importance of analysis of adolescents' issues in order to understand their problems, needs and desires. Methods: In 2012 the system for the classification of questions by the type of problem was introduced. In relation to the contents the questions were first sorted to the parent category then followed by the categorization according to the subject matter. The calculation comprised the portions, averages and quartiles, and in some cases even Cramer's V coefficients. The analysis covered the entire defined population (3,257 coded questions). Results: Most of the users are girls (76 %), the most representative group encompasses adolescents aged between 14 and 17 years (57 %). Most questions were grouped into the categories Sexuality and sexual health (24 %), Relationships (23 %) and Body (20 %). The length of posts increases with the age of the user (Cr's V = 0.18), but differs by the gender (a higher proportion of longer questions (Cr's V = 0.15) were posted by girls) and the themes (Cr's V = 0.31). Discussion and conclusion: The categorizing of questions is suitable for the identification and analysis of adolescents' problems, needs and desires. Regular categorisation of questions with analysis will serve as a useful research tool for youth work.
