Phytocenotic and ecological characteristics of urban river communities invaded by Pistia stratiotes L. and Pontederia crassipes Mart. in Ukraine
Hanna O. Kazarinova, 2025, ni določena

Povzetek: Pistia stratiotes L. and Pontederia crassipes Mart. are alien species used in aquarism and aquaculture with a high invasive capacity. The aim of the study was to establish phytocenotic and ecological features of populations of these species in urban river ecosystems. The research was conducted in 2014–2023 on water bodies of the Kharkiv city, Ukraine. Local populations of these species were found in three rivers and vegetation relevés were carried out according to standard phytosociological methods. Alien species occurred with high constancy in the communities of Lemnetea O. de Bolòs et Masclans 1955 and with a minor occurrence in fragments of communities of Phragmito-Magnocaricetea Klika in Klika et Novák 1941. The obtained results of phytoindication show a variability of humidity, aeration, and thermal regime in which the populations of these species occur. The environmental characteristics such as low temperatures, light, salt and nitrogen regime are limiting for occurrence of populations. Climatic and hydrological conditions of the city’s river ecosystems of the city are favorable for spread of communities with the present Pistia stratiotes L. and Pontederia crassipes Mart.

Razporeditev makrofitov v kraški reki Rak in ocena stanja vodnega ekosistema
Darja Kopitar, Marija Kravanja, Aleksander Trajbarič, Mateja Germ, 2022, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Kraški svet predstavljajo geografsko in geološko izjemno dinamična območja, ki so močno povezana z delovanjem vode. A Riparian, Channel, and Environmental Inventory) smo reko Rak uvrstili v najvišje RCE kakovostne razrede. Na osnovi indeksa RMI (ang. River Macrophyte Index) smo reko Rak uvrstili v dobro oz. zelo dobro ekološko stanje.

Wild and globally traded ornamental aquatic plants harbor diverse plant viruses, including notable crop pathogens
Lana Vogrinec, Katarina Bačnik, Martina Bačič, Nataša Mehle, Aimee R. Fowkes, Živa Lengar, Valerie Harju, Ian Adams, Adrian Fox, Denis Kutnjak, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Background Aquatic plants play key roles in ecosystems, serving as primary producers and providing habitat for other aquatic life. While many are ecologically important, some invasive species, often introduced through the ornamental plant trade, pose threats to various aquatic ecosystems. Although viral infections have been documented to some extent in aquatic crops, the viral diversity in wild and ornamental aquatic plants remains largely unexplored. Investigating the viral communities of aquatic plants is important, as their direct contact with water allows for the potential long-distance transmission of stable viruses released from infected individuals. Invasive aquatic plants exacerbate this issue by introducing novel microbes, including viruses, to new regions, increasing the potential threat to native plant populations. Results Here, we investigated the viral communities of diverse aquatic plants by mining publicly available transcriptome data of 79 wild aquatic species and sequencing the RNA from 14 plant species (some of them of different ornamental varieties), sourced from hobby aquascaping stores. Plant viruses from various families were detected in taxonomically diverse aquatic plants, ranging from algae to angiosperms. Alongside sequences of known crop pathogens, such as turnip yellows virus, cucumber mosaic virus, and lettuce chlorosis virus, we identified contigs of putative novel viral species belonging to several plant-infecting viral families. Most notably, we discovered sequences of known and novel begomoviruses, which may be causing observed ornamental phenotypes in two different aquatic plants. Further, we identified a novel potyvirus that appears to be globally present in multiple ornamental plants from the genus Sagittaria. We detected it in three plants sourced from online stores in Slovenia, as well as six plants intercepted during the import process into the UK. Conclusions Our findings expand on the so far limited knowledge of aquatic plant viruses, revealing known and putative novel plant viral species across diverse aquatic plant taxa. The detection of crop viruses, including regulated pathogens, in ornamental aquatic plants highlights the risks associated with their unregulated global trade. Further research into viruses of aquatic plants may provide insights into their role in ecosystems as well as their potential impact on agriculture.

Razporeditev vodnih makrofitov v dveh vodotokih kraške reke Ljubljanice, Obrh in Rak
Marija Kravanja, Mateja Germ, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: Rivers are spatially and temporally heterogeneous systems that are susceptible to changes due to anthropogenic influences. These can significantly alter water quality and river communities, including macrophytes, which are involved in nutrient cycling, energy flow and sedimentation processes, and provide habitats for other organisms. The presence, abundance, and distribution of macrophytes can thus serve as indicators of the state of aquatic ecosystems. Rivers that flow (partially) underground are particularly susceptible to (human) impacts from the hinterland due to their lower self-purification capacity. Using a modified RCE (a Riparian, Channel, and Environmental Inventory) method, we classified the Rak River as first or second RCE quality class, and the Obrh River as second or third RCE quality class. According to the River Macrophyte Index (RMI), the ecological status of both rivers was moderate, good or very good, except for the first section of the Obrh, the status of which was assessed as poor. The ecomorphological preservation of both rivers and suitable conditions for macrophyte growth contribute to the high species diversity observed in both rivers: a total of 36 taxa were recorded in the Obrh and 38 in the Rak. In the latter, the presence of Myriophyllum verticillatum L. was recorded for the first time at the time of our sampling. Almost one third of the species in each of the rivers are listed on the Slovenian Red list of threatened pteridophytes and seed plants, supporting the evidence of their high naturalness and emphasizing the importance of appropriate management of karst watercourses.

Is the Port of Koper an inhospitable environment for the settlement of non-indigenous macrophytes?
Martina Orlando-Bonaca, Ante Žuljević, Boris Antolić, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek

Povzetek: The area of the Port of Koper was sampled for benthic macroalgae within the BALMAS project, in order to prepare an overview of native and non-indigenous species (NIS). In the mediolittoral and upper-infralittoral belts of the port area, 28 algal taxa were found (21 Rhodophyta, 6 Chlorophyta and 1 Ochrophyta). Only one algal NIS was identified, the tetrasporophyte of the red algae Asparagopsis armata. The species was found in low abundances only in autumn samples, collected in the lower mediolittoral and upper infralittoral belt. The aim of this paper is to discuss the limited presence and abundance of algal NIS in the area of the Port of Koper.
