1. Enhancing iodine health awareness among adolescents : a study protocol for a multi-country intervention study in educational settings across the UK, Slovenia, Cyprus, Bangladesh, Germany and PakistanBodil Just Christensen, Natalia Cecon-Stabel, Synnøve Naess Sleire, Lisbeth Dahl, Simona Gaberšček, Katja Zaletel, Katica Bajuk-Studen, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Background: Mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency remains a public health challenge, particularly in Europe and in areas where access to iodine-rich foods or iodised salt is limited. Adolescents are a key target group for interventions, as early awareness can reduce the risk of iodine deficiency during future pregnancies. The EUthyroid2 project aims to raise iodine awareness among adolescents (aged 13–17y) to improve their iodine awareness and possibly iodine intake and indirectly enhance the health of them and their future children. Methods: A multi-country intervention study will be conducted in educational settings across six countries (Bangladesh, Pakistan, Slovenia, Cyprus, Germany and the UK). Data on iodine awareness, dietary habits, and socioeconomic status will be collected at baseline (T1), 2–4 weeks post-intervention (T2), and 26–34 weeks post-intervention (T3). A convergent parallel mixed-methods design will be employed for process evaluation. The intervention includes three components: teaching modules, an iodine feedback tool, and an online learning platform. The core content includes an iodine feedback tool and a lecture on iodine-related knowledge and awareness, accompanied by student exercises. A total of 4,500 students will be recruited. Discussion: The main outcome of the study is the change in participants’ awareness and knowledge of iodine from baseline (T1) to follow-up points (T2 and T3). The intervention is expected to effectively improved understanding of iodine’s importance for health and promoted positive behavioural intentions related to iodine intake, while also providing an opportunity to enhance iodine nutrition beyond the scope of the current trial. This study contributes to evidence on effective health promotion approaches aimed at addressing iodine deficiency. Expanding such awareness interventions could lead to lasting improvements in public health by reducing the prevalence of iodine deficiency disorders, particularly among adolescents and future generations. 2. Multidimensional effects of Covid-19 lockdowns on youth athletes : evidence from Slovenian coachesSaša Pišot, Ivana Milovanović, Kaja Teraž, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The COVID-19 pandemic, which emerged in early 2020, caused widespread disruptions to youth sport, including curriculum-based physical activity, organized sports, and active transportation. This study investigated the impact of repeated lockdowns on organized youth sport participation, physical fitness, skill development, and psychosocial well-being in Slovenia. An online survey was conducted between November and December 2021 with 116 coaches of U13–U19 athletes across multiple sports disciplines. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric analyses were employed to examine participation trends, training adaptations, and perceived athlete outcomes. Following the first lockdown, 14.6% of athletes dropped out, while 6.5% of teams reported increased membership. After the summer break, participation rebounded, and the second lockdown had a smaller impact, indicating partial resilience in youth sport engagement. Training frequency and modality were substantially affected, with 20% of coaches not implementing remote sessions and fewer than half conducting post-lockdown fitness assessments. Coaches reported declines in general physical fitness (71%) and sport-specific skills (70%), heterogeneous changes in body mass, and reduced self-confidence and motivation in over 50% of athletes, whereas team spirit remained relatively stable. A significant association between perceived changes in body mass and motivation highlighted the role of physical self-concept in supporting engagement. These findings demonstrate that prolonged interruptions to organized youth sport have multidimensional effects on physical, technical, and psychosocial development. Future research should explore long-term consequences, identify effective mitigation strategies, and consider sport-specific, age, and gender-related factors to enhance resilience in youth sports systems under exceptional circumstances. 4. Sexual health literacy among Slovenian secondary school students : a descriptive studyMarta Šporin, Tina Kamenšek, Marija Milavec Kapun, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Introduction: Sexuality education for adolescents is an important area of education. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of Slovenian upper secondary school students about sexuality, as well as their experiences, behaviours, and sources of information about sexuality. Methods: An invitation to complete an online questionnaire for first-year students was sent to all secondary schools in central Slovenia. The responses of 201 participants were included in the analysis. The average age of the respondents was 15.59 years; 57% of the participants were female and 67% attended general upper secondary school. The data were statistically analysed using chi-square, Mann-Whitney U, and t-test.Results: Respondents cited the internet (67.0%) and friends (60.4%) as the most common sources of information on sexuality. Most respondents expressed a preference for seeking information from healthcare professionals (61.2%) and least from teachers (26.5%). Sexual experiences involving vaginal penetration were found to be more frequent among students enrolled in vocational and technical education programmes than those attending general upper secondary education programmes (χ2 = 7.863, p = 0.005). Knowledge about sexuality was found to differ by gender (U = 2257.500, p = 0.003) and type of secondary school (U = 1943.500, p = 0.001). Knowledge about sexuality was positively associated with the frequency of discussions about various sex-related topics, with the exception of petting. It was, however, not associated with sexual activity or the use of protection.Discussion and conclusion: More attention needs to be paid to the provision of sexuality education for secondary school students. School nurses can promote information sharing among peers, empower parents to engage in discussions on these topics with their adolescent children, and provide sexuality education in the school setting. Our study findings on the effectiveness of different forms and contents of sexuality education can serve as a basis for enhancing the existing preventive programmes. 8. What makes me happy and what worries me? A crossnational comparison of stressors and resources for stress relief among youthMichaela Wright, Franziska Reitegger, Manja Veldin, Maša Vidmar, Katarzyina Borzucka-Sitkiewicz, Marcin Gierczyk, Katarzyna Kowalczewska-Grabowska, Barbara Gasteiger-Klicpera, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Numerous evidence-based programs aim to promote youth mental health. Unfortunately, however, they often fail to engage the target group and lack cultural sensitivity. The present study addresses these issues by using a participatory approach to look at variations of stressors and resources for stress relief among students (12-15 years) in three European countries. Two participatory workshops were conducted in three schools in Austria, Poland and Slovenia, with a total of 81 students participating in the first workshop, and 83 in the second. This study presents the findings derived from two distinct participatory activities wherein participants reported their stressors (Relevant Topics activity) and resources (Photovoice activity). Overall, the study revealed remarkable similarities in stressors and resources across the three countries, but differences were also identified. Stressors relating to interpersonal relationships, school, and self-concept were common themes. While concerns regarding health, future, and global issues were less frequently mentioned, they remained persistent across all countries, an indication of their growing relevance amid today’s multiple crises. Animals, sports, and relationships emerged as the most frequently reported resources. Creative arts and expression, music, and calm activities like reading, and spending time in nature were also frequently cited. Notably, engagement with digital devices or social media emerged neither as a common stressor nor as a notable personal resource. The findings will be used to inform the content development of a culturally sensitive digital mental health promotion program, covering salient topics comprehensively while ensuring diversity awareness. 9. Exploring the well-being of Slovenian and Serbian sport science students during the covid-19 pandemic of summer 2022Brigita Banjac, Ivana Milovanović, Saša Pišot, Radenko Matić, Stevo Popović, Sandra Radenović, Patrik Drid, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly changed everyday life of social actors, which inferred mental health and well-being concerns. As students of health-related studies tend to adapt better to difficult circumstances, in this study, we explored the effect of the pandemic on sports science students’ well-being during the summer of 2022. The research was conducted in Slovenia and Serbia. The sample comprised n = 350 students. The PERMA-Profiler, a 15-item self-reported questionnaire, was adapted to assess well-being across five elements: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. Data were collected with a questionnaire through the summer of 2022 (from May to July) and analyzed in SPSS, AMOS 26.0. The results revealed normal functioning (M = 7.72, SD ± 1.38) for the overall well-being of the students. Although all dimensions indicated high scores, relationships (M = 7.95, SD ± 1.63), meaning (M = 7.76, SD ± 1.69), and engagement (M = 7.73, SD ± 1.36) rated the highest. Furthermore, the instrument was acceptable, as the confirmatory factor analysis showed adequate reliability based on Cronbach's alpha (15 items, α = 0.94) and strong internal correlations between the PERMA dimensions. This study contributes to the previously published research, emphasizing the positive responses and successful coping of sports science students in times of complex situations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. 10. Noninvasive ventilation : education and training. A narrative analysis and an international consensus documentHabib Mohammad Reazaul Karim, Karen E. A. Burns, Laura D. Ciobanu, Mohamad F. El-Khatib, Antonello Nicolini, Nicola Vargas, Thierry Hernández-Gilsoul, Szymon Skoczyński, Vito Antonio Falcone, Jean-Michel Arnal, Irena Šarc, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek Povzetek: Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is an increasingly used method of respiratory support. The use of NIV is expanding over the time and if properly applied, it can save patients’ lives and improve long-term prognosis. However, both knowledge and skills of its proper use as life support are paramount. This systematic review aimed to assess the importance of NIV education and training. Literature search was conducted (MEDLINE: 1990 to June, 2018) to identify randomized controlled studies and systematic reviews with the results analyzed by a team of experts across the world through e-mail based communications. Clinical trials examining the impact of education and training in NIV as the primary objective was not found. A few studies with indirect evidence, a simulation-based training study, and narrative reviews were identified. Currently organized training in NIV is implemented only in a few developed countries. Due to a lack of high-grade experimental evidence, an international consensus on NIV education and training based on opinions from 64 experts across the twenty-one different countries of the world was formulated.
Education and training have the potential to increase knowledge and skills of the clinical staff who deliver medical care using NIV. There is a genuine need to develop structured, organized NIV education and training programs, especially for the developing countries.
